  I am so happy that I don't have to write this book!

  I have been an Innkeeper and now an Inn Consultant for 15 years. One of the things on my to do list was to put together all of my thoughts and blog articles into a book on Innkeeping which updated all of the prior ones that are no longer available. Now I am just thrilled that Mary White has written the definitive work on Innkeeping, and, of course, now I don't have to do it.We tell our prospective innkeepers in our Seminars on Innkeeping a lot of the information that Mary has compiled, but here it is all in one place and easily accessible to everyone. Nothing left out and a clear understanding that Innkeeping is a 24/7 job with a lot of sacrifices. It is not retirement, and it is not Bob Newhart in a cardigan sweater. Mary lays it all out for the reader, clearly and with all of the downsides, as well as the joys of sharing your lives as innkeepers with some of the greatest guests that you could every hope to meet.   Pleasantly Entertaining

  This is a different kind of romantic movie in that it has a number of scenes in Brazil early in the movie but then moves to the United States. There are extended sections in Portuguese and later in English but sub-titles are provided for the Portuguese sections which move by very quickly; we discovered we had to pause the movie in order to read the English translations.The movie is adequately paced and has some lovely scenery in both Brazil and later in California.   'Bed and Breakfast' has Dean Cain doing what he does so well- showing off his boyish smile and nice guy personality! This is a quality romantic comedy with all the usual elements. Of course, it's predictable; they all are. If you want a fun romance with a bit of conflict between the love interests, quirky but likeable characters, beautiful scenery and a happy ending, here you go.Dean's character is fixing up a huge home that he inherited from a friend. His dream is to open a B&B. This book covers almost all potential areas that you'll need to know to run a professional B&B, and the level of detail will quickly dissuade anyone who isn't serious. That having been said, anyone who does want to run a professional bed and breakfast will find the information invaluable. The forms included on the enclosed CD pay for the book themselves--everything from employment applications to inventory forms, invoices, standard recipe cards, and kitchen safety inspection forms. The book covers all stages of the planning and setup process, including business plans, marketing and promotion, safety, and employees.   This book is absolutely great. It offers a realistic look into what it would be like to own a bed and breakfast. I assumed correctly that it would be a labor intensive gig, but the book pointed out so many things that I had never thought about - such as serving breakfast may require special licensing in my state/city.This book is perfect for anyone thinking about owning and operating their own B&B. From room decorating to recipes from other B&B's, "How to Open a Financially Successful Bed and Breakfast or Small Hotel" seems to address everything a new owner would need to know, as well as offers tips on how to renovate and update existing bed and breakfasts.   My new hobby is scanning this book from cover to cover highlighting all of the wonderful inns I'm going to visit. This is a delightful book of very reasonably priced inns in the US and Canada. Every entry provides unusual information about the inns, mouth-watering breakfasts offered and local attractions. This book is well worth the money and is easily one of the best (if not the best) travel books I've ever purchased.   An engaging study of a family living in the deep South.

  I found this novel engaging and pleasant to read, in the spirit of other Southern writers such as Anne River Siddons. Ms. Battle's explorations of a troubled mother and her adult daughters, intensified by the anxieties of the Christmas holidays, kept me turning the pages at a fast clip. I feel, however, that if Ms. Battle had deleted some of the characters--even one of the three daughters--and more fully developed the others, the novel would have been deeper and more thoughtful. 4/5 0, March 13, 1999

  Interesting theme of trying to break-free of one's "culture"

  I bought this book because I like the author (and she comes from my home town in Australia). This book is reminiscent ( in parts) of Gail Godwin's "A Mother and Two Daughters", though is more superficial and therefore easier to read. I enjoyed it, but think certain characters were not developed enough (youngest daughter, boyfriend , granddaughter etc). On the whole, an interesting glimpse at a daughter trying to escape the confines of her cultural heritage and her mother's coming to terms with mortality and attempts at reconciling a fragmented family. 4/5 0, April 24, 1999

  This book goes room by room into decorating, supplies needed, rules, safety, and the likes which really helps when you are running a B&B. IT failed to really go into depth about the business aspects which I thought was a shame. This book is great if you are already running a B&B or want to decorate your house like one, but I would suggest buying several other B&B books to help give the complete picture.   Chris and Michelle sent me a copy of their book because I too pursued my dream in opening a business and they are dear friends of mine. Even though I am most definitely not interested in opening a B & B I enjoyed reading it just the same. Tt was so easy to read that I finishd it within 3 hours. However, it contained all the information that I imagine anyone considering opening a bed and breakfast would ever need to know. It is just the sort of book I wish I would have had regarding my business. It is written is such a personable voice that I felt as if I was having a conversation with Chris and Michelle. I believe they covered topics that most books on the subject would not think to cover ... the book reflects so much their generous spirit and desire to see others find the contentment and ease in life that they have found.
