Always Spot-on with recommendations, but poorly organized

The plusses:Just about every place that this book recommended, and that I've tried, has been spot on. Perhaps more importantly, it's also spot-on with respect to its recommendations of tour companies (e.g. snorkeling tours, van tours). Not one restaurant, attraction, tour company, or hotel recommended by this book has disappointed, and it recommends a lot -- you could spend a month on the Big Island and not go through half of what's in this book. For the most part, the maps are clear and helpful, and the book gives contact information as needed. The minuses:The information presented is very poorly organized. Largely speaking, this book breaks down into Sights, Activities, Adventures, and Dining/Lodging, and within each section, the listings are broken by geographic region. The problem with this approach is that, in order to see everything there is to do within a particular geographic area, you have to flip to each section. It would be far more convenient... 4/5 V. Great resource for exploring the Big Island

We just used this book to help us navigate the Big Island for a family vacation. The maps were fantastic and the descriptions very helpful. Hawaii tries to hide it's national treasures and signage is almost invisible. This book gave mile marker references and visual landmarks to help you find where you needed to go. The amount of information was a bit overwhelming, but it was great to keep in the car for quick reference as you were trying to decide what to do next. We found the information to be extremely accurate except for restaurant suggestions - some were correct, but rely on your hotel concierge first. We would highly recommend this book if this is your first trip to the Big Island or you are adults traveling alone and a bit more on the adventurous side (lots of hiking and rough terrain not suitable for little legs). 4/5 NC Family - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) The best travel books

My husband and I travel a lot and have looked at and used many types of travel guidebooks. We have found the 'Revealed' guidebooks to be, without a doubt, the best. The authors/editors don't ever hold back when they feel that a hotel, restuarant or attraction doesn't live up to its reputation or is over-priced. Big Island planning guide

The Moon guide is a good resource for planning a trip to the big island. I ordered it for my Kindle so that I could have it available on our upcoming trip. In the past I've always taken the book itself on trips and found them too heavy to deal with. Unfortunately, going back and forth on the Kindle in the planning stage is somewhat frustrating. I found that I used the Big Island pages of a Hawaii guide more than the Kindle even though the Moon guide was probably a much better guide. I think the Kindle edition will be very useful though, once we get to the Big Island. 4/5 Bill Potts - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great tips

I've gone through the entire book and have found it to be a valuable resource for activities and hotels. I plan on using it for tips on food when we actually take our trip in January but it directed me to some resources that I wasn't even aware of for accomodations and the accomodations we've booked look to be better and cheaper than the hotels in the areas. We are going with a 2 year old and because of that it eliminates a lot of activities, I found the book was very useful in identifying some additional activities that we could do with young children. I'm looking forward to our trip and will be using this book as a guide throughout the entire time. 5/5 SouthTexasEvo - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) A trusty companion

We used this travel guide every day during our trip to the Big Island. It proved to be an indispensable companion. The tips on everything from sights to restaurants were extremely helpful. We visited several "off the beaten path" gems thanks to this book. The only downside of the book is that it is organized by region. At times this made it a little difficult to search the book while on the road. We used the Kindle edition, so it may be a little easier to use in paperback. 4/5 NoVAReader (Northern Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Unbeatable

We recently spent ten extraordinary days on Hawaii. It was our first visit and had we not read this guide cover to cover before arriving we would have wasted alot of time and money taking packaged tours $$$. The book is literally overflowing with activities and has a finetuned list of recommended hotels, b&b's and restuarants. Itinerary planning was easy knowing how far and long the trails were and previewing the locations using the photos in the book was an enormous advantage. The hikes are grouped with the snorkeling beaches and so we didn't end up doing alot of extra driving. Taking advantage of the insider tips and advice it became our loyal travelling companion. Our timing couldn't have been better with the volcano spewing rivers of lava. This turned out to be a real adventurous vacation that Jenny, Patrick and I will long remember. 5/5 R. K. Indispensable Active Travelers Guide

This is another winner in the Trailblazer series. For travelers to the Big Island who don't want to be limited to the fancypants resort areas, the Sprouts have clearly laid out hikes, bike rides, water sport spots, drives, campgrounds, historic sites, and adventures galore all around this most fascinating and diverse of all the islands. My wife and I had the guidebook in hand for hikes to Pololu and Waipio Valleys, a wonderful excursion to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a drive to historical sites on the north end of the island, and an architectural walking tour of Hilo. Along with clear trail guides and maps for active adventures, the guidebook also helped us find magnificent and not overcrowded public beaches for catching some sun, art galleries, bakeries, public markets, restaurants, and two of the best B & B's we've ever stayed in anywhere--Acacia Palms and Shipman House. As all the guidebooks in this series, the writing is clear and helpful and the design is stunning;... 5/5 Chris Bennack - See all my reviews This review is from: Hawaii The Big Island Trailblazer: Where to hike, snorkel, surf, bike, drive (Paperback) We were in complete awe of this place the whole time we were there. This book has lots of good maps and a little bit of everything you need to know for the Big Island. This new Foder's Big Island travel book is going with me on my 2nd trip to the big island and I'm pretty picky about which book goes in my carry on with me. This one foots the bill! It's a perfect size (5"x8") and doesn't take up much space in my bag. This book is packed full of information and really well-done full-color maps throughout the book (along with a full-sized fold-out map*). The maps in the book are very clear to follow with numbered dots that correspond to a list of the location names that are evaluated along the edge of the map. The text pages then describe each of the numbered locations in detail and orange stars for location that are Foder's Choice and black stars for locations that are highly recommended.Hotel and Resaurant prices are categorized from a single dollar sign ($) to four dollar signs ($$$$), yet no specific rates are given, so you're... 5/5 YogaKat "YogaKat" (Oregon United States) - See all my reviews, October 28, 2012

Information is top notch, cheaper paper gives a downgrade

When making a selection for a travel book, it is 95% presentation for me. I do not need to buy any books with all of the information on the internet, but when planning a special vacation, I want to be surrounded by information in a manner that adds to the ambiance of the trip preparation. The older travel books had high gloss pages and pictures that knocked your eyes out. This current version of The Big Island is the cheaper version with pages that are low gloss and pictures that seems somewhat washed out. It does nothing to add to the experience and excitement of planning that once in a lifetime vacation. On the positive side the information is excellent. By creating a separate book just for the Big Island, Fodor's has improved their selected locations and even has some day trip plans summarized. The beach descriptions are very well done and leave not much to chance. Out of the way places are now explained in greater detail, especially on the Hilo and South sides of... 4/5 Burgmicester (Pittsburgh) - See all my reviews, November 17, 2012

Excellent handbook for the Big Island

This is a Fodor travel handbook of the Big Island of Hawaii. It is fairly concise and has pictures and covers the basics fairly well - including lodging and dining. The only thing I would mark it down for is that it needs more and better maps of each attraction. Many of the locations in Hawaii are not marked well and a quick detailed map with a mile marker is very helpful. In the past, I haven't found the Fodor books to be very user friendly, being mostly text, but these newer handbooks are much improved. Still the best handbook I have found for the Big Island is .4 stars for a pretty good handbook. 4/5 Mark E. Baxter "Inquirer" (Layton, UT United States) - See all my reviews, November 19, 2012

    Snorkel the Big Island

I had previously used the 1996 edition of Snorkel Hawaii and was quite happy to see the improvements to this edition. Color pictures of locations and entry points. Some very nice pictures of reef fish as well. The snorkeling sites that I have visited are described accurately; Kealakeakua Bay, 2-Step, Kauna'oa Beach, White Sands, Wai'alea Beach, Kailua Pier. This is a very good book for sorting out Big Island beaches. If you are just looking for a protected beach for the kids or some deep water this is the definitive book to have.BTW, The author describes Kekaha Kai Park as a "VERY bumpy access road". The condition of this road varies from nearly drivable (after it has been freshly graded by the county) to nearly impossible. I have seen lost auto parts and pools of oil on this route, so use caution.A great guide! 5/5 R. Connors (Oregon USA) - See all my reviews, April 11, 2009

We have been thinking about visiting Hawaii next year and purchased this book to get ready for the trip. The book contains everything we needed to pick out the best spots for our abilities and interests. It also contains many helpful hints on equipment and techniques. We have snorkeled the Caribbean islands and Bermuda quite a bit and have never found a guide that was even close to this. Can't wait to go! 5/5 J. Best Big Island snorkel guide

My spouse and I have used the Malinowskis' snorkel guides for both Hawaii and Maui. To us, these guide books are invaluable. Snorkel sites are not "created equal." The Malinowskis tell you which sites are best in terms of what's to see and ease of entry. They also give you insight about best times to visit the site, and safety issues to be aware of. Snorkel Hawaii and their other guides are MUSTS for those who want to experience the beautiful under-water side of the Hawaiian Islands, and do so safely. 4/5 E. Exhaustive, but lacks value judgements

I prefer Hawaii: The Big Island Revealed, by Doughty and Friedman. The Lonely Planet guides seem to mention just about everything, but they generally fail to make value judgements, i.e., Restaurant X sucks or Beach Y is fantastic. If you have time to explore and to make mistakes, then this book is a good bet. It's pretty exhaustive, and you'd need a year to see *everything* listed. But if you have, say, only a week on the island (like 95% of visitors, I'm guessing) and can't afford to eat a crummy dinner, then I would recommend Doughty and Friedman's guide. Also, in general, I feel that this guide is geared more toward the hostel crowd, relative to Doughty and Friedman. Pizza parlors and other cheap diversions versus the best places, regardless of price. 3/5 Morgan Brown (Stanford, CA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Lonely Planet Hawaii: The Big Island (Paperback) I prefer Hawaii: The Big Island Revealed, by Doughty and Friedman. A fan

I just returned from 5 super days on the Big Island. I brought along two books to guide me and this one was by far the best. It is professionally written with lots of spunk, good snorkeling recommendations and hisotorical tips. The only negative comment is that the maps are too small to read. The other book I attempted to use was The Big Island Revealed and primarily chose it because it had 70 reviews. It was very inferior and I donated it to a local thrift store. 4/5 0, February 20, 2003

    Priceless Expedition!!!

On the spur of the moment I took off for Hawaii for ten days of vacation with two guidebooks in hand. Lonely Planet ended up as the guide with the most clout. I drove the entire circuit from KailuaKona to the Volcano National Park to Hilo and it was never dull. It turned me into a petroglyph junkie. There was always something interesting to stop off and see or find. I felt as though I had been away for a month. This one doesn't waste space business bashing and fills its pages with toothy recommendations and selections worth sharing.I wish I had consulted the book before I booked my room as their Kona listings turned out to be in much better locations than the one I ended up staying at. 5/5 0, August 28, 2003

Lists of many places we would never have found

Most of the eating places were out of the way places, would have appreciated info on the more popular places. 3/5 Colleend - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not much here

This is pretty much a dump of the phone book. It gives you the restaurant name, address, etc. It does use a rating system, but it says nothing about the food on the menu, what is recommended. Pretty much a waste of time and money (although it does not cost a whole lot). 1/5 John H. Ashworth - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
