This review is from: Frommer's Shortcut Hawaii Big Island (Shortcut Guide) (Paperback) This is a good book if you don't want all the details. Shortcut means shorter book, thus there was a lot left out. If you don't really want to explore the island much, then it is OK. A Mediocre Complement to be Used with Other Travel Resources BEFORE Flying to the Big Island

Disappointing guidebook, covers well-known sites on the Big Island, doesn't go off-the-beaten path as the name "Trailblazer" implies. Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens, Liliuokalani Gardens, Pu'ukohola Heiau, and Pu'uhonua o Honaunau are presented as hikes, when they're really just a stroll through famous gardens or historic parks. Meandering the grounds of the Mauna Kea Hotel is described as a 0.75 mile hike, while actually summiting the real volcano, Mauna Kea, is barely mentioned -- they don't even give the name of the trail (Humu'ula Trail) or it's length, elevation gain, starting point, or how to register. Similarly, the Muliwai Trail to Waimanu Valley is mentioned, but anyone interested in it needs to do research elsewhere just to get started. The organization is very confusing. The Big Island is divided up into six chapters. One, called Mauna Kea, mostly covers the Hamakua Coast. Another, called Mauna Loa, strangely includes South Point: a 120 mile... 3/5 Steven K (Meredith, NH) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This book is all you'll need

We bought this book based on it's good reviews on Amazon. I read it practically cover-to-cover before we left on our trip which I highly recommend doing. There is SO MUCH information here, from the hiking descriptions we were looking for to snorkeling and surfing info (snorkeling: next visit!) to getting around (drive times: longer than you'd expect unless you read them here first), a glossary (where the language came from, what common words mean and how to pronounce them) and even some history, which we don't usually find too interesting but here, it was. We're the type that likes to be prepared when we go somewhere new, finding Big Island info online was overwhelming - where to start and what to believe? After reading this one book, we felt prepared. After visiting and finding our way around the whole island with ease, we felt this book was worth it's weight in Macadamia Nuts.Recommendation: Buy it and if you can't read the whole thing at least browse it before you go so... 5/5 Mrs. Magpie - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Lots of useful tips, but lots of dated material

The strengths of this book lie in the authors' thorough local knowledge of the island. For example, if you're interested in finding hidden beaches, volcanic pools, self-drive advice into the Waipio Valley, and so forth, this is probably the best book for these kinds of tips. They are excellent at detailing the logistics of seeing island sights on your own (exactly when, how, etc.). They also warn about potential difficulties you might encounter, such as tourist scams or signs indicating a private road when the road is in fact public (Waipi'o Valley). It has some serious weaknesses, however, when it comes to its sometimes heavy-handed opinions on local businesses. One example is the Red Sail Dive operation in Kohala. I signed up with them despite the authors' description: "Groups are held on a tight leash. Get in, get out, let's go, next site. We received no briefing whatsoever." Since they had a desk at the hotel where I was staying, I dove with them, and found... 3/5 The Belgo (Walnut Creek, CA USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Hawaii The Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook (Paperback) The strengths of this book lie in the authors' thorough local knowledge of the island. Always Spot-on with recommendations, but poorly organized

The plusses:Just about every place that this book recommended, and that I've tried, has been spot on. Perhaps more importantly, it's also spot-on with respect to its recommendations of tour companies (e.g. snorkeling tours, van tours). Not one restaurant, attraction, tour company, or hotel recommended by this book has disappointed, and it recommends a lot -- you could spend a month on the Big Island and not go through half of what's in this book. For the most part, the maps are clear and helpful, and the book gives contact information as needed. The minuses:The information presented is very poorly organized. Largely speaking, this book breaks down into Sights, Activities, Adventures, and Dining/Lodging, and within each section, the listings are broken by geographic region. The problem with this approach is that, in order to see everything there is to do within a particular geographic area, you have to flip to each section. It would be far more convenient... 4/5 V. Wonderful information, but needs reorganizing

4/5 stephanie c (oak park, ca United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Hawaii The Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook (Paperback) I just got back from two weeks on the big island and was able to explore every wonderful nook and cranny with the help of this book. It is so chock full of information about cool, hidden places, restaurants, swimming holes, etc. But for the love of Pete - can they organize it by area, not by activity. I can't tell you how many times I flipped through that book trying to find something I had previously read and couldn't remember whether it was in Sights, Beaches, Activities or Adventures - it's maddening!
