  The changing south

  This book has some very interesting recipes; but as a caution to someone who just glances at the book cover, which says "the World in a Skillet - A Food Lover's Tour of the New American South" and then think that this will have what most consider as American southern recipes.....it does not. What this book contains are stories of how immigrants are changing the American south and its food. The inside book cover says" a cornucopia of photographs". Yes there are photographs, but they are black and white photos of the chefs whose recipes are included, about 1 every third page. Also many recipes are not prepared in a skillet, which is also implied by the cover and title.There is an interesting introduction `We are all from somewhere else' and 5 traditional recipes from the south. The rest of the recipes are from Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Central and South America, Vietnam, Bosnia, India, Japan, South Korea, China, Kosher, Europe, Africa.There is... 3/5 wogan - See all my reviews, March 14, 2012

  I bought this book as a birthday present to a friend. After looking through it, I now MUST buy one for myself.   Interesting Novel

  This is an historical novel about the Civil War in Indian Territory. I bought this book thinking that it was non-fiction. The fact that this book is a work of fiction was not obvious in the advertising, so I want to make that clear in this review. Having said that, the novel does embed its story in a lot of historical data which appears to be pretty accurate. In fact the transition between telling the story and simply conveying information about the times and culture was somewhat wooden at times. So, it was a decent read and I did learn some interesting things.
