Turning Horror Movie Cliches Into A Twisty Post-Modern Game: Beware Of Spoilers And Enjoy

With geek god Joss Whedon (creator of TV's Buffy and Firefly among other fan favorites) on board, it's fair to say that the expectations for "The Cabin in the Woods" were quite high for enthusiasts of the horror genre. Here he shares a writing credit with the film's director Drew Goddard and the result is one of the year's more entertaining experiments. I truly think that this is a film that will suffer due to those that are willing to discuss too many of the plot points in advance, so I'll be brief in my actual descriptions. I will say this, though, the less you know about the movie--the more fun you can have. In my opinion, even the advertising campaign and trailers hint at too much. You know from the start that this isn't your typical fright fest. Instead, what is served plays up and skewers every horror movie cliche imaginable. It is both hip and witty, as well as smarter than it has any right to be. It twists movie conventions around in clever new ways and makes something that... 5/5 K. I love this movie, and don't care what anybody says!

I can't believe some people are giving this movie a 1..even 2's. Hello!? This movie was amazing. Probably one of the most original, UNPREDICIBLE movies I've seen in a really long time(And I've seen many). Its funny that people are saying this movie is predictable and boring because there's no way you can guess whats going to happen. Its never been done before. Its funny, gory, and you'll probably jump a few times without this movie being cheesy or stupid. Not too scary, but the unique-ness of this story makes up for it. definately go see it! 5/5 ashley - See all my reviews This review is from: The Cabin In The Woods [Blu-ray + UltraViolet Digital Copy] (Blu-ray) I can't believe some people are giving this movie a 1..even 2's. Classic Joss and Drew

. . . complete with Buffy/Angel veterans Tom Lenk (sadly under-used as "just an intern") and Amy Acker.I think I'd class it as a "novelty movie" (analogous to that strange category: "novelty song") or maybe just an animated comic book. Suggestion -- "Take a walk!"Why the ill-timed and weirdly inappropriate sex? Pheromes. Why are they doing this to us?Because it's no longer legal to throw virgins DIRECTLY into volcanoes.Loved the stoner carefully locking his car (but leaving the window open).Loved the riff by the Scary Old "harbinger" Guy on the rudeness of being put on speakerphone. In the white-walled lab you will see echoes of Buffy's "Initiative" -- with a twist. WORST MOVIE EVER MADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every single thing about this film is horrible. How is it possible that this is for sale on Amazon? Is it really that easy to just throw a bunch of crap together and sell it? If so, I'm in the wrong line of work. I want my $9.99 back!!!!! Even more importantly, I want those 89 minutes back. This is the strangest and most disturbing film I have ever seen - and not in a good way. The writer, director, and villain of the film is one Jason C. Moulton, a very disturbed man who somehow got out of prison temporarily to make this abortion of a film. The film is nothing more than the director's own twisted and bizarre fantasy of terrorizing, murdering, and dare I say, raping young women. He is the "Cousin It" of the 21st Century. The rape scene in this movie is so bizarre and so out of place from the rest of the terrible movie, it looks like it was added as an afterthought. It must have been because that scene looks like it was filmed on a hand held camcorder from the 1970's. Titan Books

Paperback is full of typos and is a bland read.

I purchased this book in paperback with the hope it would shed some more light on the characters' thoughts that we wouldn't otherwise see in the movie as well as contain some extra lines of dialogue or even some deleted scenes. The result is a book that closely follows the screenplay of the film with some extra dialogue here and there that doesn't add up to much. This is basically like reading the screenplay in novel form and there are no surprises nor anything really worth discovering if you've already seen the movie. The insight into the characters' minds isn't particularly interesting and half the time I found myself growing bored with this book. If you've already seen the movie, there really isn't anything worthy of mention here, nothing new to excite you or make you sympathize with the characters more. What you get is page after page of predictable thoughts with descriptive action that follows the events of the film. But what really put me off were the typos. like the movie, but even more so

this novelization is based on the screenplay for the movie, so it contains some lines that were cut from the final edit of the film. that makes it even more fun. it's really well-done, giving me insights into the characters and what they are thinking. and like the movie, it's a whole lot of fun. crazy crazy ride. i wouldn't want to read this before seeing the film though, unless i was sure i couldn't see it for a long time. but after seeing the film, reading this just brings it all back, fleshes it out even more, makes the joy ride of cabin in the woods last just that much longer. yay. the only thing i don't love is that the print is TINY TINY TINY, so it's hard to read without magnifying glasses. but that means there are a lot of words in the book and that's a good thing. more words means the fun lasts that much longer.i want joss whedon to read it for an audio book! i would love love love to listen to joss' voice reading this as i go to sleep at night. :-) 5/5 Jenna Wikler "skulker" (Northampton, MA USA) - See all my reviews, April 28, 2012

This is definitely in my top 10 favorite movies

It's both a love letter and a send up to all the classic (and cookie cutter) horror movies. It's silly and awesome, just a little bit scary and secretly kind of a thinker if you really want to delve into it. Plus, it's a geeky horror movie made by a bunch of horror movie loving geeks, so there is just a ridiculous number of inside jokes, easter eggs and monster cameos for the people who really get into this stuff (I'm pretty sure even the casual horror movie watcher and the not usually horror movie watcher could love this movie too, but unlike so many movies recently, it wasn't made for or with the normals in mind).(Oops, didn't realize this was for the novelization, and not the movie. Oh well, still stands. Movie is better than the novelization, but the novel does clarify some of the internal though processes of the characters.) 5/5 tracy huggins "akzidenzgrotesk" (cincinnati, OH USA) - See all my reviews, September 19, 2012

    A great collection

Lionsgate deserves plaudits for their excellent four film collection series on DVD. I usually buy only blu rays now, but at this great price this was too good an offer to pass up. Even with international shipping, it was highly affordable.I was surprised to find that the four films came in four separate discs, instead of two-fers or flippers. Disc art is minimal though. Lionsgate has not skimped on the extras either, with a decent amount of valuable supplemental material. One of the films had four commentaries, in fact. Again, I did not expect any extras or even SDH subtitles at this low price for all four films. Lionsgate has somehow managed to fit in all four discs in one standard DVD case, so do not worry about shelf space. As for the movies themselves, the price of admission is worth for Cabin Fever and Descent alone, both excellent movies. The fact that their not-so-well-known sequels are included is a real bonus. Again, don't expect the sequels to live up... 5/5 Pramod (Colombo, Sri Lanka) - See all my reviews, February 3, 2011

Redefining the genre? No, but a treat for horror buffs.

One of the things that makes Cabin Fever a genuinely fun outing for horror fans is the cast and crew's obvious enthusiasm for what they're doing. Even without viewing the entertaining (if rather short on substance) "Making of" featurette, you can easily tell that the film was a labor of love with a game cast. While the extras don't shed much light on the film's progress from unsellable script to most-hyped horror film of 2003-- which would undoubtedly have made for a fascinating story-- the movie is (almost) enough of a delight to make up for it.Cabin Fever takes pretty much every convention of "classic" drive-in horror films of the 70's, and manages to make them look new again. Curmudgeons may say that it's nothing more than a Scream-esque parody of horror movie chestnuts, but the approach is really quite different. Instead of self-conscious winks to the audience, the walking cliches of Cabin Fever seem to enjoy playing their roles to the hilt, with performances that are as... 4/5 skytwo "skytwo" (Boston) - See all my reviews This review is from: Cabin Fever (DVD) One of the things that makes Cabin Fever a genuinely fun outing for horror fans is the cast and crew's obvious enthusiasm for what they're doing. Ti West, director of the cult favorite HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, disassociated himself with the project, citing numerous difficulties in the production process. Anyone that has seen the final product can understand why, but this straight-to-video sequel isn't the complete disaster it has been made out to be. Students at the local high school are in for a big surprise when the flesh-eating virus from the previous film finds its way into the prom care of a case of infected spring water. Though the teen-edgy script is wholly idiotic, it is equally entertaining with its low-brow humor and gooey gross-outs. Even the stock characters and empty plotting are outweighed by the exploding bodies, projectile vomit, bloody water sports, and countless other repulsive gags. Following Roth's lead, Ti West also includes a number of references to genre classics, most noticeably in the reprisal of the PROM NIGHT... 3/5 Carl Manes - See all my reviews, July 12, 2010

    Are you drunk or something?

Honestly... the older I get, and the more views I give this flick... the funnier it gets. I've been fan of Elliott's since "Get A Life" and by the time I saw this film, any hope of anyone even knowing who he was, was long gone. But it didn't matter. I struggled through my first viewing thinking, "wow, this movie sucks hard," but for some reason still decided to watch it again. That's Elliott's charm/magic... you don't really get him, sometimes he even annoys you, but you just wanna give him another go. So... 5, 6, 14 viewings later... I get it! I get it every time now! I get a little more each and every time now! Honestly... even my girlfiend didn't want to like this and she was howling! It's about the subtleties... a funny glance, a funny dance, a flying, talking cupcake, or more than likely, a really good one-liner. Anyway... I'm rambling... watch this movie 2-3 times then enjoy! 5/5 J. G. Burtch "mufuka" (Halifax, NS, Canada) - See all my reviews, March 22, 2004

The Hidden Value of Cabin Boy!

The first time you watch this movie, you'll probably agree that it is pretty dumb, and from first glance seems like its only intent is cheap laughs and one-liners. When I first saw it, that's pretty much how I pictured it as well. It really didn't seem to have much depth besides the occasional imperceptive joke. Then, I watched it again and the entire point started to slowly unfold. The comedy of this movie is not found in jokes or funny scenes (though these do add to it), but in the plot and characters themselves. This is probably the single biggest reason people consider this movie useless; they don't see past the jokes. The real humor lies in the main character Nathaniel's personality and lifestyle. Nathaniel Mayweather is a resident at the finishing school for young gentlemen, where he puts everyone around him in a terrible mood on a daily basis and yet is able to keep his feminine "Fancy Lad" qualities and gentleman like lifestyle, i.e. powdering his bottom and listening to his... 5/5 Mike D. Great Film - bound to be an interesting DVD

When I first saw this film in a theater with a broken heater suffering through a 103 degree fever, I believed that it was either a twisted flu triggered dream or one of the most delightfully insane films ever made. After all, could I attribute the presence of a mermaid Russ Tamblyn and a tabacco chewing talking cupcake to anything other than my own cooking brain. It seems that the filmmakers were under the same spell when they made this delightfully hilarious - yet horridly absurd film that has seemed to attract a legion of followers (and an equally strong army of detractors). Showcasing the talent of former Late Night with David Letterman regular Chris Elliot - fresh from the mixed success of his sitcom Get a Life (which managed to survive at Fox until a new head of programming decided he hated the show and vowed to cancel it despite decent ratings in even the worst time slots) - brought his charm to the big screen as a "fancy lad" who signs on as a cabin boy on a ship of crusty... 4/5 David C. Great music, great cast, Ethel Waters at her best

This is a delightful film. The Broadway score, already one of the finer scores for its time, with the classics "Taking a chance on love" and "Cabin in the sky", was further improved with the addition of "Happiness is just a thing called Joe". There are several other wonderful numbers, including the Duke Ellington number with some great dancing, and "Bubbles" singing "Shine". The cast was the finest black talent of the day, and the movie demonstrates why Ethel Waters was considered the greatest singer and entertainer of her day. In this movie, she also demonstrates that she is a fine actress and a fine dancer. It's a pity that the racial climate of the time didn't allow her more films - she's as magical on screen as she was, by all reports, in person. The remainder of the cast includes a stunning young Lena Horne, surely one of the most beautiful women ever to appear on screen, and who is here allowed to be smolderingly sexy, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, who's an endearing... 5/5 chandy123@aol.com (cleveland, ohio) - See all my reviews This review is from: Cabin in the Sky [VHS] (VHS Tape) This is a delightful film. A Musical Morality Tale

Ethel Waters repeated her Broadway role of Petunia Jackson, a woman who fervently prays for her husband to mend his gambling ways for the screen with great success, as she sings and dances her way into our hearts. Petunia is the central character in the film, and has most of the songs. The film was also instrumental in making Lena Horne a star, and even though her part as the devil's handmaiden, Georgia Brown, is not a large one, she is stunning, and makes the screen sizzle with her sensual beauty.Petunia's husband, Little Joe, is played by Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, and Little Joe's soul is in the balance, as Lucifer Jr. (Rex Ingram) battles The General (Kenneth Spencer) for where it will spend eternity. The scenes with Lucifer and his minions, who include Louis Armstrong, are hilarious, as they plot the best way to tempt Little Joe. The talent, music, and humor in this film make it well worth watching as entertainment, and also for its historical value of being one of... 4/5 Alejandra Vernon "artist & illustrator" (Long Beach, California) - See all my reviews, August 10, 2005

HAPPINESSS IS JUST A THING CALLED "Cabin" on DVD!

The beautiful Vernon Duke/John La Touche Broadway hit CABIN IN THE SKY was brought to the screen by the foremost studio of the era (the late and lamented M-G-M) and the foremost producer of musicals there, the magnificent Arthur Freed.Freed engaged the services of the Broadway hit's original star Ethel Waters, and gave Vincente Minnelli his first assignment as a motion picture director. Minnelli had directed on stage, but spent two years at Metro learning the craft of filmmaking, before Freed gave him the opportunity to become one of the greatest of all motion picture directors. Minnelli's musicals are what he is best known for, but he also directed brilliant dramas (both period and contemporary), comedies (both slapstick and witty) and even films that could be considered noir. This man could do anything.....The Warner DVD of CABIN features a clean, and crisp transfer with lovely extras including the Pete Smith short STUDIO VISIT which has the surviving footage... 5/5 Eric "OhioGuy" (Columbus, OH) - See all my reviews This review is from: Cabin in the Sky (DVD) The beautiful Vernon Duke/John La Touche Broadway hit CABIN IN THE SKY was brought to the screen by the foremost studio of the era (the late and lamented M-G-M) and the foremost producer of musicals there, the magnificent Arthur Freed.Freed engaged the services of the Broadway hit's original star Ethel Waters, and gave Vincente Minnelli his first assignment as a motion picture director.
