Cape Cod

Creator: Agnes Rothery | Travel - 2010-05-25

This fascinating look at several towns on Cape Cod, including Sandwich, Dennis, Orleans, Chatham, and Provincetown, was originally published in 1918.

About this book
From the 1918 foreword: "The old road to the Cape is lost and with it much of the dust, both of reality and romance. But a new road has opened, bringing every year hundreds and hundreds of automobiles; and literally thousands of men and women who would otherwise never breathe the balmy air or see those windswept moors. . . Surely, we old Cape-Codders must and do greet them all hospitably. It is for their special welcoming that this little book is written."

0 5/5 Mary Stewart "the foxy lady" (Highland Falls, NY United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cape Cod (Paperback) Cape Cod is my most favorite place in the world, although I do not live there (wish I did). Been going there for over 50 years on trips, love every part of it. There is no place like it and I buy every book about the Cape that I can find. And no one knew Cape Cod better than Henry David Thoreau - he truly loved it for what it was - the peace of the ocean and the beauty of the waves, the birds and the sand. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 12, 2013

0 4/5 Peter J. McArdle - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cape Cod (Kindle Edition) Thoreau's careful descriptions and train-of-thought presentation lend the reader a very different view of Cape Cod. He carefully blends his several trips to the Cape into a single narrative that evokes a time when the Cape was not the vacation mecca it is today. His story is written , for the most part, about the outer cape, Orleans, Truro and Province-town. He uses his many references to the early descriptions and explorations of the to contrast what he sees and how the Cape has evolved to what he sees in the 1850's, which leads the reader to make the same kinds of comparisons with their personal experiences on Cape Cod. The National Park Visitor Center in Eastham has an excellent short film illustrating features of Thoreau's visits and observations on Cape Cod which are basedon this book. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 1, 2013

    CAPE COD.....It ain't just beaches.....

At least not in William Martin's novel of the same name. In Martin's CAPE COD there are feuding families, long-held secrets, regional history and, tying it all together, a mystery - as well as those wondrous beaches and that natural essence of 'The Cape' (as we New Englanders know and love it) that he brings to life in this story. From the first pages of this novel, in which whales inexplicably beach themselves, Native Americans and White men clash, and the Pilgrims, noble, flawed and human as they were, suffer the awful indignities of the relentless voyage to the New World, we're off on a William Martin-style adventure. As is his BACK BAY and ANNAPOLIS, the story unfolds through the eyes of (sometimes warring - always interesting) families, and jumps back and forth in time. This enables us to feel the historical events that are going to impact on the modern-day intrigue. I have always liked this about William Martin's stories. Superb tale of a region

0 5/5 Steve Clark - See all my reviews This review is from: Cape Cod (Mass Market Paperback) As a devout reader of Michener, Rutherford and Jakes, William Martin's Cape Cod is just as good as anything written by those authors. I judge historical novels on how well they capture the 'sense of place' of the region they focus on. I have spent summers in Cape Cod when I was very young and am currently delving into the genealogy of New England families, and for me, Cape Cod really captured the historical and present-day feelings of the land and the people extremely well. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 3, 1999

    Really Works

0 5/5 Hogarth (Salt Lake City, Utah United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cape Cod Polish 8821 Polishing Cloth (Tools & Home Improvement) I had a number of expensive watches, but I was wearing them less and less because the bands were looking worn. I tried to polish them with something around the house, but with mediocre results. I kept reading about the Cape Cod Polish on the Internet and gave it a shot. Brought all of my watches back to new condition by removing scratches and making the metal shine. Also worked great on my wife's jewelry. The smell is pleasant. The polish is a little oily, so I use plastic gloves (not a big deal if you just want to use bare hands).I use the pink, Cape Cod cloth to polish all around the watch and then a small Dremel with a polishing pad to really bring out the shine. I finish off with a stiff-bristle brush to get polish out of the nooks and crannies.Highly recommended. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 7, 2010

    The BEST!!!!

0 5/5 MTurney - See all my reviews This review is from: Cape Cod Polish 8821 Polishing Cloth (Tools & Home Improvement) I can't say enough positive about the Cape Cod Polishing Cloths. I used them to polish the shiny areas of my TAG Heuer and to do a final polish on the shiny areas of a vintage Zenith I am restoring.A couple of warnings however:1) The product does contain petroleum distillates, therefore you will want to avoid using it on a watch case because the seals can degrade, compromizing the water resistance. Perfect for the band however, or very carefully on the case using a Q-tip soaked in the CC "juice", then blotted, then avoid the seals as much as possible. Also, rinse everything soon afterwards.2) CC cloths WILL remove gold plating - AVOID on plated surfaces altogether.Take care! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 7, 2011

Cape Cod is the ultimate desert island beach book.

Each year, in preparation for a week's retreat to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I go in search of a book that would be perfect for a sojourn on a desert island. Of course, the Outer Banks are hardly deserted--the locals have printed up Wege's infamous photograph of a packed stretch of Coney Island with the caption "Nags Head, circa 2000 A.D."--but there we are on an island for seven days, my husband experiencing near death in the waves while I read. Sometimes we stop these pursuits and prowl the beach. Mostly we live as if we're the last two people on earth (which is easier in the off-peak season).I've learned that not every book is right for this way of life. The perfect desert island book has to celebrate the place you are in, not transport you. It should offer a tinge of society, because, after all, a human is a social animal, but it should not make you yearn achingly for what has been left behind nor should you be so repelled by it that you will... 5/5 Kevin M. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cape Cod (Hardcover) This hardcover edition from Peninsula Press is unquestionably the best available edition of Thoreau's Cape Cod, for these reasons:1) While all other editions are based on Thoreau's journal entries from only his first three visits to the Cape, this edition includes an epilogue compiling Thoreau's notes from his fourth and final visit, in which he traveled south to Chatham and Monomoy.2) This is the only edition to translate the many, many Greek and Latin phrases Thoreau includes throughout the work, and it is also the only edition to provide illustrations, maps, and sidenotes in-text.3) This is the only indexed edition ever created.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for fans of both Cape literature and Thoreau in general. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 30, 1997
