Cape Cod

Creator: Agnes Rothery | Travel - 2010-05-25

This fascinating look at several towns on Cape Cod, including Sandwich, Dennis, Orleans, Chatham, and Provincetown, was originally published in 1918.

About this book
From the 1918 foreword: "The old road to the Cape is lost and with it much of the dust, both of reality and romance. But a new road has opened, bringing every year hundreds and hundreds of automobiles; and literally thousands of men and women who would otherwise never breathe the balmy air or see those windswept moors. . . Surely, we old Cape-Codders must and do greet them all hospitably. It is for their special welcoming that this little book is written."

    The BEST!!!!

0 5/5 MTurney - See all my reviews This review is from: Cape Cod® Metal Polishing Cloths Foil Pouch 0.53oz (Home) I can't say enough positive about the Cape Cod Polishing Cloths. I used them to polish the shiny areas of my TAG Heuer and to do a final polish on the shiny areas of a vintage Zenith I am restoring.A couple of warnings however:1) The product does contain petroleum distillates, therefore you will want to avoid using it on a watch case because the seals can degrade, compromizing the water resistance. Perfect for the band however, or very carefully on the case using a Q-tip soaked in the CC "juice", then blotted, then avoid the seals as much as possible. Also, rinse everything soon afterwards.2) CC cloths WILL remove gold plating - AVOID on plated surfaces altogether.Take care! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 7, 2011

    Really Works

0 5/5 Hogarth (Salt Lake City, Utah United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cape Cod® Metal Polishing Cloths Foil Pouch 0.53oz (Home) I had a number of expensive watches, but I was wearing them less and less because the bands were looking worn. I tried to polish them with something around the house, but with mediocre results. I kept reading about the Cape Cod Polish on the Internet and gave it a shot. Brought all of my watches back to new condition by removing scratches and making the metal shine. Also worked great on my wife's jewelry. The smell is pleasant. The polish is a little oily, so I use plastic gloves (not a big deal if you just want to use bare hands).I use the pink, Cape Cod cloth to polish all around the watch and then a small Dremel with a polishing pad to really bring out the shine. I finish off with a stiff-bristle brush to get polish out of the nooks and crannies.Highly recommended. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 7, 2010

    CAPE COD.....It ain't just beaches.....

At least not in William Martin's novel of the same name. In Martin's CAPE COD there are feuding families, long-held secrets, regional history and, tying it all together, a mystery - as well as those wondrous beaches and that natural essence of 'The Cape' (as we New Englanders know and love it) that he brings to life in this story. From the first pages of this novel, in which whales inexplicably beach themselves, Native Americans and White men clash, and the Pilgrims, noble, flawed and human as they were, suffer the awful indignities of the relentless voyage to the New World, we're off on a William Martin-style adventure. As is his BACK BAY and ANNAPOLIS, the story unfolds through the eyes of (sometimes warring - always interesting) families, and jumps back and forth in time. This enables us to feel the historical events that are going to impact on the modern-day intrigue. I have always liked this about William Martin's stories. This sense of what it was like 'then,' how... 5/5 Jayhawk (Boston, Ma. 0 5/5 Steve Clark - See all my reviews This review is from: Cape Cod (Mass Market Paperback) As a devout reader of Michener, Rutherford and Jakes, William Martin's Cape Cod is just as good as anything written by those authors. I judge historical novels on how well they capture the 'sense of place' of the region they focus on. I have spent summers in Cape Cod when I was very young and am currently delving into the genealogy of New England families, and for me, Cape Cod really captured the historical and present-day feelings of the land and the people extremely well. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 3, 1999

This review is from: Cape Cod (Paperback) Cape Cod is my most favorite place in the world, although I do not live there (wish I did). Been going there for over 50 years on trips, love every part of it. There is no place like it and I buy every book about the Cape that I can find. And no one knew Cape Cod better than Henry David Thoreau - he truly loved it for what it was - the peace of the ocean and the beauty of the waves, the birds and the sand. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 12, 2013

Historical viewpoint of Old Cape Cod

0 4/5 Peter J. McArdle - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cape Cod (Kindle Edition) Thoreau's careful descriptions and train-of-thought presentation lend the reader a very different view of Cape Cod. He carefully blends his several trips to the Cape into a single narrative that evokes a time when the Cape was not the vacation mecca it is today. His story is written , for the most part, about the outer cape, Orleans, Truro and Province-town. He uses his many references to the early descriptions and explorations of the to contrast what he sees and how the Cape has evolved to what he sees in the 1850's, which leads the reader to make the same kinds of comparisons with their personal experiences on Cape Cod. The National Park Visitor Center in Eastham has an excellent short film illustrating features of Thoreau's visits and observations on Cape Cod which are basedon this book. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 1, 2013

GOOD VISIT WITH HENRY DAVID THOREAU

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) is probably best known for “Walden” and “Civil Disobedience.” Neither has the readability of “Cape Cod,” one of the accounts he wrote of his extensive travels. He was a great travel writer, eager to describe the places he visited, using a more relaxed tone with lighter philosophical inclination than that used in his controversial essays. As an essayist he was relentless as an advocate for the discovering of life’s true necessities. He was a lifelong abolitionist and champion of civil disobedience. Some described him as an anarchist, although he seemed to favor the improvement of government rather than the destruction of it. While either sitting in prison or residing in solitude on Walden Pond, his writings were heavy with transcendental idealistic musings on “the meanness of the world.” Not so much with his travel tales that seemed to lighten his countenance.Always known... 4/5 Schuyler T Wallace "Writer, traveler, retire... An American classic

The Outermost House is a classic, not just of natural history literature, but of American literature. If you love the outdoors, or the sea, or prose that flows like poetry, you should keep this small book always nearby. The harried introvert will especially appreciate it: reading even a page or two will transport you to a quiet place where the wind through the dune grass is the only sound that strikes your ear.In addition to being a great writer, Beston is an acute observer biological phenomena, and not a bad theorist either. His discourse on the relationship other animals bear to us ("They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations...") does more to unlink the Great Chain of Being than any philosophical essay. And Beston's influence has been wide-ranging, not only among natural history writers, but among writers in general: unless I am mistaken, The Outermost House is one of the sources for the "Dry Salvages" section of T.S. Eliot's... 5/5 R. J. O'Hara - See all my reviews, October 6, 2000

    A wonderful & relaxing book

The Outermost House is one of my favorite books. Henry Beston has a wonderful writing style that produces vivid images of his year spent living in a small house on the dunes of the beach on Cape Cod in 1926. We see through his eyes a year of seasons passing, birds in migration, storms, shipwrecks, and peaceful solitude.I've read this book several times. Beston's imagery is excellent, making it easy to picture the Cape Cod setting, see what he saw, walk where he walked, and at the same time feel the sea breeze on your face and relax.Another tribute to this book is that you can literally open it to any page, any paragraph and find fresh and descriptive writing. Here, I'll pick a truely random page now:"...Streaming over the dunes, the storm howled on west over the moors. The islands of the marsh were brownish black, the channels leaden and whipped up by the wind; and along the shores of the desolate islands, channel waves broke angrily, chiding,... 5/5 Dave (Tucson, AZ USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Thoreau meets Proust on Cape Cod.

I had never heard of Henry Beston until a friend lent me--or, more accurately, pressed on me--his copy of The Outermost House. After reading this book, I understand his sense of urgency: this is a work of unique and lasting beauty, surely one of the greatest nature books ever written. In detailing his year in his cottage at Eastham Beach (now Coast Guard Beach) on the Atlantic side of Cape Cod, Beston combines a Thoreauvian zeal for nature and the examined life with a Proustian ability to record exactly the sight, sound, feel and scent of the world around him. Page after page is filled with unforgettable passages; his descriptions of the markings and songs of the shore birds alone are enough to move you to tears. His story of the plight of a doe caught in an icy flood is almost as suspenseful as a Hitchcock movie; his tribute to the courage of the Coast Guard "surfmen" who rescue shipwrecked sailors is particularly resonant to us who--after Sept. 11, 2001--have learned... 5/5 Miles D. Very nice product, Artistic as well as Practical with Generous Amount of Information

What I liked:1. Beautiful, suitable as a wall piece of art for framing if you purchased a non-folded one somehow (I do not know if this is possible through National Geographic).2. Useful Mobile Barcodes on the document for use with smart phone imncluding Cape Code National Seashore, Coast Guard Light List, Weather information (3 different ones for Provincetown, Orleans, and Hyannis), Coast Guard Navigation Center.3. Charts for Marinas and Beaches with tables that detail features of the location and a National Seashore Trail Guide.4. The legends are artistic and clear for everything from Golf Course to Restrooms, to Beacons and more. What I did not like so much:1. Kind of expensive, however, as pointed out on the product, the purchase is supporting the mission of National Geographic.2. It is not plastic like many maps that you can purchase that fold up, though it is a somewhat rugged paper that is "waterproof" and "tear resistant"... 4/5 promethian man "atlantis reviews" (Naples, FL United States) - See all my reviews, August 1, 2013

    Superb Map

I have friends who vacation in Cape Cod every year and I plan on going with them this Fall. This map will allow me and my friends to truly appreciate Cape Cod.Firstly, the map is made of a durable synthetic paper. As a result it is waterproof and tear-resistant. It is made in the United States. I have never used a map like this before and wish all were like this. I can open the map and fold it different ways without worrying about the paper tearing. The words on the map are easily readable even in the shade. The colors are bright. The topographical nature of the map makes it easy to see which sea shore trails will be tougher walks than others. While I don't sail, the map also can serve as a boating chart for those who do.The map includes a beach guide and shows activities and what conveniences are available at each spot. For instance if you want to take swimming lessons or picnic the list shows which areas allow you to do this.
