Cape Cod

Creator: Agnes Rothery | Travel - 2010-05-25

This fascinating look at several towns on Cape Cod, including Sandwich, Dennis, Orleans, Chatham, and Provincetown, was originally published in 1918.

About this book
From the 1918 foreword: "The old road to the Cape is lost and with it much of the dust, both of reality and romance. But a new road has opened, bringing every year hundreds and hundreds of automobiles; and literally thousands of men and women who would otherwise never breathe the balmy air or see those windswept moors. . . Surely, we old Cape-Codders must and do greet them all hospitably. It is for their special welcoming that this little book is written."

Cape Cod is the ultimate desert island beach book.

Each year, in preparation for a week's retreat to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I go in search of a book that would be perfect for a sojourn on a desert island. Of course, the Outer Banks are hardly deserted--the locals have printed up Wege's infamous photograph of a packed stretch of Coney Island with the caption "Nags Head, circa 2000 A.D."--but there we are on an island for seven days, my husband experiencing near death in the waves while I read. Sometimes we stop these pursuits and prowl the beach. Mostly we live as if we're the last two people on earth (which is easier in the off-peak season).I've learned that not every book is right for this way of life. The perfect desert island book has to celebrate the place you are in, not transport you. It should offer a tinge of society, because, after all, a human is a social animal, but it should not make you yearn achingly for what has been left behind nor should you be so repelled by it that you will... 5/5 Kevin M. - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Leave your brain at the door.

You will forget about the outside world when you read this; nothing but sand, wind, and water. Plus some natural history, local folklore, a few shipwreck tales. Typical Thoreau; he finds beauty, interest, detail in the wilderness. The desolate landscape will help to clear your mind. Highly recommended. 5/5 0, June 24, 1999

    America's beginnings

Martin brings the plight of the Pilgrims to life. He also manages also to so us once again that these were people and not icons. While fiction, it is easy to visualize the petty argumnets and personality struggles within this group that most of us assume was a cohesive unit with a united purpose. Using his now familiar device of switching back and forth from now and then, Martin paints a living picture of the early history of the Cape. This was the last of Martin's books that I read prior to Citizen Washington. I hesitated because I thought the topic limited but I ended learning and enjoying a compelling history of a special niche in American history.Martin demonstrates an uncanny ability to tell the great stories (Annapolis - US Navy) a the small (Cape Cod) and make them breathe. 5/5 Charles Andrews (Fort Worth, TX USA) - See all my reviews, September 10, 1999

    CAPE COD.....It ain't just beaches.....

At least not in William Martin's novel of the same name. In Martin's CAPE COD there are feuding families, long-held secrets, regional history and, tying it all together, a mystery - as well as those wondrous beaches and that natural essence of 'The Cape' (as we New Englanders know and love it) that he brings to life in this story. From the first pages of this novel, in which whales inexplicably beach themselves, Native Americans and White men clash, and the Pilgrims, noble, flawed and human as they were, suffer the awful indignities of the relentless voyage to the New World, we're off on a William Martin-style adventure. As is his BACK BAY and ANNAPOLIS, the story unfolds through the eyes of (sometimes warring - always interesting) families, and jumps back and forth in time. This enables us to feel the historical events that are going to impact on the modern-day intrigue. I have always liked this about William Martin's stories. Superb tale of a region

As a devout reader of Michener, Rutherford and Jakes, William Martin's Cape Cod is just as good as anything written by those authors. I judge historical novels on how well they capture the 'sense of place' of the region they focus on. I have spent summers in Cape Cod when I was very young and am currently delving into the genealogy of New England families, and for me, Cape Cod really captured the historical and present-day feelings of the land and the people extremely well. 5/5 Steve Clark - See all my reviews This review is from: Cape Cod (Mass Market Paperback) As a devout reader of Michener, Rutherford and Jakes, William Martin's Cape Cod is just as good as anything written by those authors. Good value for the money.

I bought this based on customer reviews and doing some online searches for something to polish my stainless steel watch collection. This seemed to fit the bill. The entire kit comes packed in a metal can and inside you will find twelve individual polishing cloths wrapped in a plastic film and sealed (2) per plastic bag, one buffing cloth and one pair of latex gloves. The directions are on the lid of the can in English and French. The company is based in Dennis Massachusetts, which is located on Cape Cod and hence the name. The clothes are impregnated with a petroleum distillate, which is somewhat aromatic, but not unpleasant. The manufacturer claims the following on the side of the can:"Cleans the toughest jobs, polishes to a mirror shine, protects with our anti-tarnishing formula which significantly stretches time between polishes. Pleasant aroma. And finally Superior polish for Silver, Gold, Brass, copper, nickel, pewter, aluminum ans stainless steel."... 4/5 Paul D. Sullivan (Mass. Excellent book, full of information!

Just returned today from Cape Cod. This book was very useful. Great lists of events, activities, restaurants, beaches, etc. Book was in excellent condition, just as the seller had described it. Wish we would have had more time to tour Cape Cod and go to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket, but Hurrican Irene put a damper on a lot of our plans... not so much rain, but high winds made for very rough waters. Will definitely use this book if I get a chance to go again... 5/5 Alana Ayers "Alana Ayers" (Altoona, KS) - See all my reviews, August 30, 2011

    An American classic

The Outermost House is a classic, not just of natural history literature, but of American literature. If you love the outdoors, or the sea, or prose that flows like poetry, you should keep this small book always nearby. The harried introvert will especially appreciate it: reading even a page or two will transport you to a quiet place where the wind through the dune grass is the only sound that strikes your ear.In addition to being a great writer, Beston is an acute observer biological phenomena, and not a bad theorist either. His discourse on the relationship other animals bear to us ("They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations...") does more to unlink the Great Chain of Being than any philosophical essay. And Beston's influence has been wide-ranging, not only among natural history writers, but among writers in general: unless I am mistaken, The Outermost House is one of the sources for the "Dry Salvages" section of T.S. Eliot's Four... 5/5 R. J. O'Hara - See all my reviews, October 6, 2000

    A wonderful & relaxing book

The Outermost House is one of my favorite books. Henry Beston has a wonderful writing style that produces vivid images of his year spent living in a small house on the dunes of the beach on Cape Cod in 1926. We see through his eyes a year of seasons passing, birds in migration, storms, shipwrecks, and peaceful solitude. I've read this book several times. Beston's imagery is excellent, making it easy to picture the Cape Cod setting, see what he saw, walk where he walked, and at the same time feel the sea breeze on your face and relax.Another tribute to this book is that you can literally open it to any page, any paragraph and find fresh and descriptive writing. Here, I'll pick a truely random page now:"...Streaming over the dunes, the storm howled on west over the moors. The islands of the marsh were brownish black, the channels leaden and whipped up by the wind; and along the shores of the desolate islands, channel waves broke angrily, chiding, tossing... 5/5 Dave (Tucson, AZ USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Thoreau meets Proust on Cape Cod.

I had never heard of Henry Beston until a friend lent me--or, more accurately, pressed on me--his copy of The Outermost House. After reading this book, I understand his sense of urgency: this is a work of unique and lasting beauty, surely one of the greatest nature books ever written. In detailing his year in his cottage at Eastham Beach (now Coast Guard Beach) on the Atlantic side of Cape Cod, Beston combines a Thoreauvian zeal for nature and the examined life with a Proustian ability to record exactly the sight, sound, feel and scent of the world around him. Page after page is filled with unforgettable passages; his descriptions of the markings and songs of the shore birds alone are enough to move you to tears. His story of the plight of a doe caught in an icy flood is almost as suspenseful as a Hitchcock movie; his tribute to the courage of the Coast Guard "surfmen" who rescue shipwrecked sailors is particularly resonant to us who--after Sept. 11, 2001--have learned... 5/5 Miles D.
