not up to the usual lonely planet standard

We have always devoured our LP guides for asia and hawaii and took them with us everywhere we went.I don't if its b/c of websites like trip advisor, but this new LP guide for Cancun is like reading a large tourist brochure you get for free, listings but no real info. For instance, the info on Tulum and mayan ruins had very little about the ruins. That is a major attraction and most people reading lonely planets are usually independent travelers so there should have been more info. What food is available on the beach and how long the walk is from the ruins to the beach areas? There are many restaurants, you just have to keep waling down the beach. This book was like the old Fodor's guides, but without the great pictures. A great read for the airplane to get you excited about the trip, but not really any practical info.Don't buy this guide if plan on using it for specific info when you travel, but use it to help you frame your travel... 1/5 Skater (Oregon) - See all my reviews This review is from: Lonely Planet Cancun, Cozumel & the Yucatan (Travel Guide) (Paperback) We have always devoured our LP guides for asia and hawaii and took them with us everywhere we went.I don't if its b/c of websites like trip advisor, but this new LP guide for Cancun is like reading a large tourist brochure you get for free, listings but no real info. For instance, the info on Tulum and mayan ruins had very little about the ruins. An Embarrassment for the Lonely Planet Series

When I bought the book I was torn by the split rating of two 5s and two 1s. Now, that I used the book to travel Yucatan, I find the 1 star rating absolutely justified. Tons of information in the book are inaccurate. Some examples: The book tells you there is a visa fee if you arrive by air - there isn't. It tells you Chichen Itza closes at 5.30pm followed by a light show at 7 pm. It closes at 4.30pm and there is no light show. Many sights like the Muyil ruins (which was amazingly beautiful) are not even described, the information about the appreciation of credit cards and USD was wrong - almost nowhere you can pay with credit card and get ripped off if you pay with USD. It happens frequently that unspectacular sights are hyped in the description. The authors are way to often rating the sights instead of describing them. In addition the book is almost free of the typical Lonely Planet insider tips which make the other travel guides so valuable.Provided maps are vastly of no use,... 1/5 yJohnson - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cozumel Dive & Adventure Guide Franko Maps Waterproof Map (Map) We bought this map to take with us for a one day stop on Cozumel on a cruise. This was our second time there & we wanted to explore the island. The map was perfect for this. It was very detailed and made getting around the island very easy. Great map at a good price. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 25, 2007

0 5/5 Gabe Donzelli "Gabe Donzelli" (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cozumel Dive & Adventure Guide Franko Maps Waterproof Map (Map) I found this map useful both figuring out where we had dived that day and what fish I saw. It also has a decent map of the town and a detailed map of the area immediately around the town.Given the way diving is run in Cozumel at large, a map is useful but not essential, since you are taken around by the dive operators. Most diving is done from a boat. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 17, 2011

0 4/5 Ally H - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Fodor's Cancun and the Riviera Maya: with Cozumel and the Best of the Yucatan (Full-color Travel Guide) (Paperback) I really enjoyed perusing this book as I made plans to visit Riviera Maya. The articles on Mayan culture and tequila crafting were especially interesting. I just wish there was a few more detailed maps of the area between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 26, 2013

Some helpful pointers, but lacking in real insight

Bought this after booking a Cancun trip hoping for plenty of tips on things to see and do in the area. Fodor's guides have been great for this on other trips, however this one was a bit lackluster - the bulk of the Cancun chapter is focused on hotels and restaurants, most of which are in hotels, and this was not incredibly helpful for someone who had already booked a hotel. Also the guidance on getting to and from Isla Mujeres was out of date, quoting a much lower price than what it actually cost for a round trip ferry ride, and the tips on carrying USD vs. pesos were also not in line with my experience -- I paid an exchange fee to buy pesos on its recommendation, but never once went anywhere I needed them - and found that in most cases the USD price was lower. On the whole, aside from making me feel more educated before I landed, I didn't find that this book offered anything that wasn't widely known by the tourism welcoming committee at the airport, my hotel concierge and many of my... 2/5 Brendan W. Not Much in the book that is not in flyers all over the Island

0 3/5 Steve C. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cozumel the Complete Guide II (Paperback) If you have never been to Cozumel it is somewhat useful. The Island is so small and most of the attractions are heavily marketed by the aggressive sales people at the airport, ferry dock and hotels/resorts. One thing to be careful of, if you rent a car or scooter to explore the island, is the police can spot rentals (and tourists) like a sore thumb and they do pull tourists over for no reason and try to bribe money out of you. A section on how to deal with the police when this happens would make the book priceless. $50 plus US money is the going rate for the police to let you go. Not all police are like this and even though we had to pay off the police I never felt unsafe...just pay and go. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 23, 2013

    Great book, needs maps

0 4/5 Marcy Hotz - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cozumel the Complete Guide II (Paperback) I enjoyed the book, it even includes coupons for many of the places it talks about. I wish it had maps in it, that would have made it a 5-star. A map around the island, a map of el centro, points of interest, hotels, restaurants, etc. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 16, 2014
