    don't waste your money

I was terribly disappointed in this 2006 tiny book on Cozumel. It was a waste of money. I can't believe that I just paid [...] for a travel book which I will throw in the trash after a 45 minute read. More current information is shown on my Can-Do travel guide map. And, yes, I did go to the website which was referred to in a previous review, to check out updates and changes. There I found only a few name changes for restaurants. In all fairness, I was not looking for a guide which listed only food sources, shopping and night life. That was 3/4 of this book's offerings. I wanted in depth information about places to visit of natural and ecological interest and historical interest. Specifically I wanted more information on Punta Sur Park in the south and Punta Molas in the north of the island. Nothing was found in this book. Also, in fairness, I had previously read some standard current travel guides on Cozumel, but hoped to get some in-depth information from this... 1/5 jmfdr (Elizabethtown, ky United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Cozumel Pocket Guide

This is a great guide and worth every penny! My family just got back from a Cozumel vacation Nov 21 - Nov 30, 2008 and found this guide to be a great planning asset. We didn't leave the hotel without it because it either fit into my shorts pocket or into my wife's purse. We used it everyday to help us plan our daily activities, as well as, our breakfast, lunch and dinner plans. The guide was published late in 2006 (after the hurricane) and is still very accurate, we only found 2 places that had either closed or changed names. The guide is presented as a "Best Of" list from everything from best dinning, best shopping, to the best beaches, and the descriptions are detailed and accurate. The guide never steered us wrong, we were happy with every recommendation. There is even an overall island map and a map of the downtown area to help you on your adventures. I wanted a travel guide that focused only on Cozumel and not the surrounding Yucatan/Playa Del Carmen/Cancun; this is... 5/5 Josey (Wisconsin USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Cozumel Reef Creatures Guide Franko Maps Laminated Fish Card 4"x6" (Map) The quality seems great and I'm glad it's waterproof. If I had one complaint it's that the small text on the card is printed in a color that isn't very contrasted to the background making it a little hard to read with my aging eyes. I'm sure it will be better in sunlight. I just ordered a second one for my kids. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 7, 2014

The book barely mentions the amazing - and free

I echo what other reviewers said. We've just got back from Cancun, and the book repeatedly failed us with outdated information. It appears that Forod's did little else than changing the year on the cover from the last edition. A few concrete examples:1. The book says that Yucatan uses Central time. In fact, Yucatan is divided to 3 states, and one of them (Quintana Roo, the one containing Cancun and the Riviera Maya) moved to Eastern Time Zone in Feb 2015. This created a lot of confusion for us when we traveled across state lines.2. The book barely mentions the amazing - and free! - night show in Chichen Itza. It took us a lot of trial and error to find the details (online we found only misleading information, like it being closed or pricy or outdated.) In fact, the lightshow was completely redone for 2015, but requires a (free) reservation you can only book online. Your hotel can do it for you. Arrive the night before by 4-5pm, have them book it for you, be there by 6:30pm... 2/5 David Meiri (Cambridge, MA USA) - See all my reviews, December 25, 2015

Not enough maps, guides, or planning resources.

0 3/5 david berryrieser - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Fodor's Cancun & the Riviera Maya: with Cozumel & the Best of the Yucatan (Full-color Travel Guide) (Paperback) It contains more hotel and restaurant recommendations and fewer sightseeing descriptions, maps, and general planning resources than I prefer in a travel guide. If you had no internet access during your trip, this might be a good thing. For example, the description of the massive ruins at Coba was brief and did not include pictures or maps. Despite taking up a good portion of the book, the hotels and restaurant sections could not even come close to covering the available options and we had much better success exploring on our own. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 5, 2016

An Embarrassment for the Lonely Planet Series

When I bought the book I was torn by the split rating of two 5s and two 1s. Now, that I used the book to travel Yucatan, I find the 1 star rating absolutely justified. Tons of information in the book are inaccurate. Some examples: The book tells you there is a visa fee if you arrive by air - there isn't. It tells you Chichen Itza closes at 5.30pm followed by a light show at 7 pm. It closes at 4.30pm and there is no light show. Many sights like the Muyil ruins (which was amazingly beautiful) are not even described, the information about the appreciation of credit cards and USD was wrong - almost nowhere you can pay with credit card and get ripped off if you pay with USD. It happens frequently that unspectacular sights are hyped in the description. The authors are way to often rating the sights instead of describing them. In addition the book is almost free of the typical Lonely Planet insider tips which make the other travel guides so valuable.Provided maps are vastly of no use,... 1/5 yJohnson - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) not up to the usual lonely planet standard

We have always devoured our LP guides for asia and hawaii and took them with us everywhere we went.I don't if its b/c of websites like trip advisor, but this new LP guide for Cancun is like reading a large tourist brochure you get for free, listings but no real info. For instance, the info on Tulum and mayan ruins had very little about the ruins. That is a major attraction and most people reading lonely planets are usually independent travelers so there should have been more info. What food is available on the beach and how long the walk is from the ruins to the beach areas? There are many restaurants, you just have to keep waling down the beach. This book was like the old Fodor's guides, but without the great pictures. A great read for the airplane to get you excited about the trip, but not really any practical info.Don't buy this guide if plan on using it for specific info when you travel, but use it to help you frame your travel... 1/5 Skater (Oregon) - See all my reviews This review is from: Lonely Planet Cancun, Cozumel & the Yucatan (Travel Guide) (Paperback) We have always devoured our LP guides for asia and hawaii and took them with us everywhere we went.I don't if its b/c of websites like trip advisor, but this new LP guide for Cancun is like reading a large tourist brochure you get for free, listings but no real info. For instance, the info on Tulum and mayan ruins had very little about the ruins. Great eBook! I highly recommend it for Cozaholics as well those who are planning a first time Cozumel trip.My wife and I have been diving in Cozumel for over 10 years spending a total of about a month a year there. I wish that I would have had access to the Cozumel Reef Guide for all of those years.Even after diving almost all of the sites in the Guide a number of times, it is so helpful to have a map of each site in front of you and your dive master prior to each dive. I dove with a DM many years ago in Cozumel who had reef maps and would always use them as part of his dive briefing to orient his group to the layout of the reef, how we were going to dive it, and what we might see in various places. Unfortunately he moved to another part of Mexico and other DMs normally don’t have maps of the reefs. Now I can bring this on my smart phone and use it with the DM to do much more detailed dive briefings. While I really like the maps in the Guide,... 5/5 ScubaDive (Maryland) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
