Daytona Beach, 100 Years of Racing

Creator: Harold D. Cardwell | History - 2002-07-01

Daytona Beach: 100 Years of Racing follows NASCAR's evolution from grassroots racing to its rise as one of the most talked about spectator sports in the world.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing (SC)

About this book
NASCAR, one of America's favorite pastimes, got its start on Daytona Beach--"The World's Famous Beach." For decades people have flocked to Daytona's 23 miles of white sand not only for relaxation and spring breaks, but also for the racing action once offered on its hard-packed sand shore. Dozens of records were set on the beach during low tide before promoter Bill France Sr. organized the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing at the Streamline Hotel in 1947. From those humble beginnings years ago, France turned his vision of what NASCAR could become into the brand of racing known today. Daytona Beach: 100 Years of Racing follows NASCAR's evolution from grassroots racing to its rise as one of the most talked about spectator sports in the world. The more than 200images in this photo history illustrate why this sport--once known only to those south of the Mason-Dixon Line--is now an international phenomenon. Travel the course of racing's famous and lesser-known heroes like Sir Malcolm Campbell, Lawson Diggett, Clessie L. Cummins, Richard Petty, and Dale Earnhardt Sr. Experience the pile-ups, victories, and defeats, and understand why NASCAR history is incomplete without Daytona Beach.

World's Most Famous Beach: Spring Break, NASCAR, Bike Week... and Ghosts?

As one who spent a portion of an earlier life in and around Daytona Beach, I found the title of Dusty Smith's book to be fascinating... enough so to pick it up and give it a closer look. This slim volume clocks in at 127 pages, but there's a surprising amount of material between the covers of this fast read, and some of it can be quite funny to one who spent time in the area. The history and historical trivia buff in me compelled me to take a look... or could it have been something else?Daytona Beach is probably best known for Spring Break (though MTV has switched it's loyalties to Panama City), NASCAR and Bike Week, and if author Dusty Smith has anything to do with it, the town will soon be known for the ghosts and spirits that evidently dwell in the area. Must add that I'm not into... 4/5 John Williamson (NYC & Bucks County, PA) - See all my reviews, October 14, 2008

It also provides some history of the city that I was not aware of. I remember watching them build the speedway and even remember seeing a little bit of a race on A1A at the south turn before the speedway was finished. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 28, 2014

Fascinating pictorial history of Daytona Beach!

I was born a stone's throw from the Daytona International Speedway. I drove my first car down International Speedway Boulevard, thinking the odometer didn't work. "I can't get it up over forty!" I complained. My dad, ever the calm one, quietly explained what a "tachometer" was, and informed me I had been flying down the road at forty miles OVER the speed limit. He never broke a sweat. The salesman recovered the power of speech by the time we returned to the lot, and I had my first car - a fully-loaded, powder blue Ford Mustang. I road my bicycle around the race track - two and a half miles of mind-numbingly boring scenery - and I've driven a car down the beach, the beach by which I judge all other beaches in the world. In November 2008, I was asked to take a look at Historic Photos of Houston, by Betty Trapp Chapman. It highlighted how little I knew about my current hometown, and piqued my interest in learning more. Naturally, I was eager to review Historic Photos of... 5/5 Holly Jahangiri "Author" (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews This review is from: Historic Photos of Daytona Beach (Hardcover) I was born a stone's throw from the Daytona International Speedway. 0 5/5 Dacs - See all my reviews This review is from: Daytona Sands (Rick Sands Suspense Novels Book 1) (Kindle Edition) I loved the unique setting for this murder mystery--the city of Daytona Beach, both past and present. A great combo of surfing community, southern town in the past, more urban today---and a main character who's complex in his background and his friends. The plot twists and turns kept coming---so I'm looking forward to more books and more development of the character's back story. A great page-turner! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 26, 2013

This review is from: Daytona Sands (Rick Sands Suspense Novels Book 1) (Kindle Edition) I stayed up late to finish reading Daytona Sands, and don't resent a minute's lost sleep. Rick Sands is a Florida prosecutor facing the case of his career, and the reader gets to go along as he sorts out murders new and old, sex, politics and one very creepy (but believable) bad guy. This book was fun to read and I look forward to further Rick Sands novels. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 6, 2013

    I shouldn't complain

0 3/5 C Ellis - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Daytona Sands (Rick Sands Suspense Novels Book 1) (Kindle Edition) I'm so sorry, but I just didn't enjoy the book. I guess I shouldn't complain because I got it free, but I was disappointed because of all the excellent reviews. The book didn't flow for me. Although I liked the opening pages, as I continued reading, I really got bored. Really bored. In my opinion it was not a great book, just average. The protagonist, Rick Sands, didn't have much of a personality; but I liked Tyrone King. I'd love to read a book with him as the lead character.I also didn't like that there was no x-ray concepts available for this book. I like to look back at some characters to see how they fit into the story. Maybe I've just gotten spoiled with this additional goodie on my Kindle. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 6, 2013

This book is very well written and illustrated and gives not only the facts and statistics but the personal points of view and experiences of many of the participants. The book itself is heavy and solid and would make a great coffee table book if you can take your eyes away from it long enough to set it down. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is fascinated with motorcycles and motorcycle racing. Don't get your hopes up

0 1/5 Car enthusiast - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Bought this brush after reading great reviews and watching pro videos and thought this would work wonders on the rims and brakes on my 01 land rover discovery. For 45 bucks I thought it would be a fix all as the videos showed it that way. Wrong. Did not even wipe off the rims. Like cleaning your wheels with a baby bottle bristle brush. A disappointment to say the least. Buy the mothers long handled brush. Now that won't break the bank or your back and it works. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 17, 2011

GREAT To get deep into rims......

This was recommended to me by a guy who details very high end cars($200 thousand and up!).It does what its supposed to...It gets deep in the wheel rims to get the crud off. I use this to get inside of rim area and wipe the tighter areas on the front facing of rim with a microfiber cloth.I used to cut my hands once by the brake area while trying to get into the rims deep enough using a microfiber cloth but not anymore thanks to this brush :-)!**NOTE** If you have rims with a LOT of fine spindle wire looking spokes VERY close together this would not be good to get in-between as this brush has a decent size diameter...My car rims are pretty basic ( I have a 2013 Lexus es300h) It's a good addition to my car detailing arsenal.1/28/14 I've had this brush for a few months now and detail my car almost every weekend (what can I say I'm a woman who likes a clean car!) I have had no issues with it scratching my rims and it seems to be holding up well. I always... 5/5 L. Bollinger (Florida) - See all my reviews, November 27, 2013
