Daytona Beach, 100 Years of Racing

Creator: Harold D. Cardwell | History - 2002-07-01

Daytona Beach: 100 Years of Racing follows NASCAR's evolution from grassroots racing to its rise as one of the most talked about spectator sports in the world.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing (SC)

About this book
NASCAR, one of America's favorite pastimes, got its start on Daytona Beach--"The World's Famous Beach." For decades people have flocked to Daytona's 23 miles of white sand not only for relaxation and spring breaks, but also for the racing action once offered on its hard-packed sand shore. Dozens of records were set on the beach during low tide before promoter Bill France Sr. organized the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing at the Streamline Hotel in 1947. From those humble beginnings years ago, France turned his vision of what NASCAR could become into the brand of racing known today. Daytona Beach: 100 Years of Racing follows NASCAR's evolution from grassroots racing to its rise as one of the most talked about spectator sports in the world. The more than 200images in this photo history illustrate why this sport--once known only to those south of the Mason-Dixon Line--is now an international phenomenon. Travel the course of racing's famous and lesser-known heroes like Sir Malcolm Campbell, Lawson Diggett, Clessie L. Cummins, Richard Petty, and Dale Earnhardt Sr. Experience the pile-ups, victories, and defeats, and understand why NASCAR history is incomplete without Daytona Beach.

World's Most Famous Beach: Spring Break, NASCAR, Bike Week... and Ghosts?

As one who spent a portion of an earlier life in and around Daytona Beach, I found the title of Dusty Smith's book to be fascinating... enough so to pick it up and give it a closer look. This slim volume clocks in at 127 pages, but there's a surprising amount of material between the covers of this fast read, and some of it can be quite funny to one who spent time in the area. The history and historical trivia buff in me compelled me to take a look... or could it have been something else?Daytona Beach is probably best known for Spring Break (though MTV has switched it's loyalties to Panama City), NASCAR and Bike Week, and if author Dusty Smith has anything to do with it, the town will soon be known for the ghosts and spirits that evidently dwell in the area. Must add that I'm not into... 4/5 John Williamson (NYC & Bucks County, PA) - See all my reviews, October 14, 2008

    Dusty's Ghost Tour

0 5/5 Nick Howes "NickH6" (Nashville, IL USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Haunted Daytona Beach (Haunted America) (Paperback) Dusty Smith has strong credentials for this book. Besides being head of a Daytona Beach paranormal group, she gives ghost tours where she has been recounting these tales she's gathered over the years and points out the locations where they occur. The tours pay for maintenance of city cemeteries. The quick-reading, well-illustrated book has a lot of great history wrapped around ghost stories. My favorite story is the bikers bar where the toilets flush by themselves...you know they don't get flushed much otherwise. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 3, 2008

Fascinating pictorial history of Daytona Beach!

I was born a stone's throw from the Daytona International Speedway. I drove my first car down International Speedway Boulevard, thinking the odometer didn't work. "I can't get it up over forty!" I complained. My dad, ever the calm one, quietly explained what a "tachometer" was, and informed me I had been flying down the road at forty miles OVER the speed limit. He never broke a sweat. The salesman recovered the power of speech by the time we returned to the lot, and I had my first car - a fully-loaded, powder blue Ford Mustang. I road my bicycle around the race track - two and a half miles of mind-numbingly boring scenery - and I've driven a car down the beach, the beach by which I judge all other beaches in the world. In November 2008, I was asked to take a look at Historic Photos of Houston, by Betty Trapp Chapman. It highlighted how little I knew about my current hometown, and piqued my interest in learning more. Naturally, I was eager to review Historic Photos of... 5/5 Holly Jahangiri "Author" (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews This review is from: Historic Photos of Daytona Beach (Hardcover) I was born a stone's throw from the Daytona International Speedway. in the mid fifties 'Fireball Roberts' used to come next door

and hang out and drink beer, go fishing, and talk uh.. stuff, with my Godfather who was the head mechanic of the best company at the tiny Daytona airport.. At one point on a cigarette run they put me in the car with Fireball and I got to hold the smokes and beer on my lap on the way back from the country store.. I saw a couple of the last beach races from WAY too close, just before the track opened too.I worked that track many a time later, in the infield, on the apron, doing whatever..This book has it about right.Oh there are a few things glossed over, France fanaticism and 'tax free status', and such but over all it's a decent retelling of a odd time in American history that when the cars finally go, will never come again. This whole series, Images in America is a wonderful frozen moment in time, usually written by some crotchety old local type or matron. The prose is sometimes a little uneven, the pacing often slow, but the WEALTH of data in there is so... 5/5 L. McDaniel "panamacity-books" (near the Cove in Bay county, Fl. I love this app

0 5/5 Deborah L. Muni (Ormond Beach, FL United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Daytona Beach News-Journal (App) I love this app. It appears on my devices (iphone and Kindle Fire tablets) as if I was reading the actual newspaper - colored ads and all. I don't understand why some reviewers seem offended by having to pay for a subscription. If you received the newspaper at your home every day, you would have to pay for it. I love being able to read it on my phone or tablet and not have the clutter that a paper newspaper causes. I think it's well worth the $10.95 I pay for the monthly subscription. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 6, 2015
