The #1 Go To Book for planning a Disney Vacation (and then some)

For those of us who have never been to Walt Disney World or have only been only once or twice, I cannot recommend a better book on the market. This book, and the accompanying website, touringplans.com, are the best sources of in-depth reviews, ratings and details of every aspect of WDW. From hotels/resorts to dining to rides and venues, this book HAS IT ALL IN ONE PLACE. The most important feature of this book, in my opinion, are the Touring Plans - which give you an idea of how to tour the parks in an efficient manner so that you spend less time in long lines and more time enjoying your vacation. Hit those headliner rides first and utilize the Fast Pass system. You'll be much happier and less stressed for it.I have purchased earlier editions of this book, but things change quickly at Walt Disney World and the 2013 edition has up-to-date information on the major changes to Fantasyland and everything else that has changed since our previous visit.Below is a... 5/5 Gitsy (Northeast USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) The Bible of all things Disney World

As a Disneyfied Florida mother of 2 Disneyfied boys (and wife to a more reluctant but willing Disney husband), I was very impressed with the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2013. We go to the Disney World parks at least once a year and sometimes two to three times a year. We have stayed at value resorts, moderate resorts, and a couple Deluxe resorts as well. We have been during summer, the days leading up to Christmas, spring break, Easter, and slower times like May or November. I subscribe to touringplans.com, read disboards.com, and check up on a couple Disney blogs regularly. Why do I tell you all this? To emphasize that someone that is as Disney-fanatic as me still learned some new things from this book.Really, this is the only book you need for Disney. It has it *all*. It is not biased towards Disney, so the authors give you a fair representation of Disney, both the positives and the negatives. With nearly 900 pages, here are the highlights:... 5/5 Mom to 2 boys (FL) - See all my reviews, October 2, 2012

Fantastic information for all types of WDW fans

I consider myself a Disney World expert. I've been to Disney several times (in fact, I'm on track to have been to Disney 4 times in 14 months), stayed at most levels of hotels (value, moderate, and deluxe), read Disney World forums, blogs, Facebook groups, work as a Disney travel specialist, and I even have a large and well-traveled Disney World food blog and a Disney World family/crafting blog. I honestly expected that this book would give me no new information, would be lacking any worthwhile info with regards to the new Fantasyland expansion and associated rides, and would only have real value for those who never go to Disney, have never been, like to micro-manage their Disney time, or those who're just generally clueless about the whole Disney experience. However, I was very surprised to find information that was completely up-to-date, offered surprisingly complete evaluations of the new Fantasyland and how to tour it, and even had a wealth of useful information I put to... 4/5 Jerusha "Scarlet Harlot" (New Hampshire) - See all my reviews, October 8, 2012

    Must-have for Disney trip planning

This guide is my favorite of all the books we bought for our previous Disney trips. It is so thorough and honest. I felt that most of the opinions and reviews were in line with our own based on our experiences at Disney. The info on dining is so helpful. We had the 2011 version and hoped for new reader comments in the 2012 edition but most of them are repeats. This one does have updated information on newly renovated rooms and rides. A must-have if you want to save time, money, and sanity on your Disney vacation. 4/5 savingsinseconds "Savings in Seconds" - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Love the daily park guides

We bought this in tandem with the much larger Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World (sans the kids). This book contains many helpful recommendations on rides, attractions, and restaurants that are best to do with the little ones. As I am someone who likes to over-plan, my favorite part is the daily trip guides which easily lay out steps to see entire parks in one or two days (multiple guides are given based on the age of the child, too!). 5/5 jwfgeol - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Seemed Like Filler and I Don't Need Parenting Advice Thankyouverymuch.

So, I read this about a month before we left for Disney World with THREE children -a 1 year old, a 3 year old, and a 4 year old. Some of the advice is incredibly helpful-the fastpass info, general ideas as to the layout of the park. They warn you to get reservations at the character restaurants early-so true. They continually recommend their plans-but they weren't so helpful. It just seemed like the entire book could could be condensed into the regular book. The author's advice to get up early to get to the park early to start the touring plans so that you can see the most of the park-would probably be good for most people-not for us! We went later-as in 11:00 a.m. stayed enough to ride a few rides-maybe 4 hours? That worked for us. I hate rushing around like its the Amazing Race or the like. What annoyed me the most-was the "how to raise your child" advice throughout the book. I get "make sure your kids get a nap"-very helpful and true. But the... 3/5 HerApronStrings "HerApronStrings" (The American South) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Dark Side is not for everyone, but a great read!

This review was originally posted as a "The 626" column on MiceChat.com...It seems like almost every week, I sit down to start reading a new book about Disney. Whether it's a biography, behind the scenes tell-all, or just a general history book, there is no shortage of books on the topic. But every so often, you come across a book that is a little bit different than the rest...a little bit off, if you will. Something that really grabs you by the shoulders, shakes you a bit, and yells "Hey, look at me!" Well, today I'm here to talk about The Dark Side Of Disney, by Leonard Kinsey, the latest book to do that to me.The Dark Side Of Disney is NOT your typical travel guide. In fact, I would dare say it's not even for the faint of heart. While most guides point you in the right direction for great dining deals, fantastic tips for the Parks, and general Disney knowledge, this one leads you straight off the beaten path & into forbidden territory... 5/5 Jeffrey S. I Want To Do Disney With This Guy...

I really liked this book! My husband is an obsessed Disney World fan, so that's pretty much the only place we vacation (he bought an RV almost solely for use at Disney's Fort Wilderness to eliminate the hassle and cost of dealing with hotels...he's committed). We usually go a couple times a year, depending on where the military has us stationed at the time. If we're within 12 hours of driving (I don't fly...sorry Leonard), then according to him, we're close enough!Having been to the parks so many times I thought I knew it all and was pretty smug about my Disney expertise...turns out, I didn't know jack. I loved the stories of he and his friends roaming the parks, going down to the Utilidors (something I MUST do now...thanks), and all the tips and tricks he's come up with through the years. While many are not tips and tricks I would personally use (what with them being illegal and all), they were still funny to read about. Being military, we get obscene ticket discounts... 4/5 Mercedes L. Johnmeyer (Gales Ferry, CT) - See all my reviews, October 7, 2011

    Something new for Disneyphiles

This was a purchase for my sister who is a huge Disneyphile. While everyone in our family fall under that category, she lives in Southern California and frequently flies to Florida just to go to the parks. She know everything about the parks. So, I saw this and thought that this had to have something she didn't know!As I went to wrap it, it took me forever, because of course, I had to open it to see what it contained! This book is chock full of information, but beware, this is truly the "Dark Side" and for adults only. Do not leave this book lying around for your children to see.Among fun anecdotes, it also tells you have to scam money, places to have sex without getting caught and places you can get into to sneak around. My sister loved it (not that she would do any of those things)...and learned something new 4/5 Angela R. Sorry to have to criticize

I enjoy books about Disney and normally don't judge them harshly. But people should be warned about this one. In just the first couple dozen pages, there are numerous items that are out of date. It's kind of sad that families will go searching for the old-fashioned phone in the General Store, will go to awaken Tinker Bell in the Fantasyland shop, will go to see Tink in the keyhole of the sewing table there, the wooden leg on the lost and found shelf at the Frontierland station -- when all of these features have been removed over a year ago. In addition to being outdated, the information is sometimes just wrong. For instance, it isn't true that "WDW imagineers could not dig a basement in Orlando as they did at Disneyland in California ..." There are no utilidors in Disneyland. (Walt was frustrated to see a cowboy walking through Tomorrowland on his way to work in Frontierland in Disneyland -- since there was no other way to cross the park. And the idea for the WDW... 1/5 A reader - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Enjoy the parks even more!

As a long time Disney fan, I've devoted a lot of time to my Disney obsession, both on vacation and at home (so much so, that I met my wife on a Walt Disney World fan site). I've read so many Walt Disney World guide books that they all look alike to me anymore. The Hidden Magic of Walt Disney World is not a Disney World guide book intended to teach you how to get around the parks and when the best time to ride Dumbo is. What this book does is point out a lot of the overlooked and hidden details about the park. Many of the details that the average guest may look right at, failing to understand what they're looking at or why it's there, and failing to appreciate the meaning of it as a result. This book points out the painstaking detail the imagineers design into the park in an attempt to maintain an authentic atmosphere, or to ensure you truly *feel* the emotions they want you to feel at that moment, thus, allowing you to truly experience the magic. This book is for those who have... 5/5 John Crissup - See all my reviews, June 9, 2009

    Enjoyable read

I'm always happy to learn more trivia about my favorite place on Earth, so I picked this book up as soon as I found out about it. I think I wanted to be blown away by all sorts of hidden secrets, but probably half of the items in here I already knew about or had noticed before. That said, there were still several new things that I'll be looking for on our upcoming trip. The style of the book is basically a walkthrough of the four parks with the aim to draw your attention to all the wonderful details at WDW. There are interesting tidbits throughout about why things are designed the way they are and how the Imagineering mindset works. My favorite part was a breakdown of the history of each park, walking through nearly year by year and detailing when attractions/parades opened and closed. I love that kind of stuff.Overall, a nice book and a worthy read for the WDW fan. 4/5 Jason M. Diller "Nerd" (North Street, MI USA) - See all my reviews, May 30, 2009

    Helpful tips

This book has many tips in it for people who are planning to go to Disneyworld. As a newbie to planning a vacation there, I really appreciated the tips in this book. Most helpful is finding out that we can take our own food into the park to decrease the amount spent on food sold there. Also where to stand for the best views of the parade and about when to start waiting for it, which monorail to get on after the fireworks show to save time waiting in line, or which rides to make sure we get to. These little hints are what will make it less stressful and more enjoyable to be able to see everything we want to see. 5/5 Sharon - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Most helpful is finding out that we can take our own food into the park to decrease the amount spent on food sold there. Also where to stand for the best views of the parade and about when to start waiting for it, which monorail to get on after the fireworks show to save time waiting in line, or which rides to make sure we get to. These little hints are what will make it less stressful and more enjoyable to be able to see everything we want to see. A book on the POOLS of Disneyworld resorts

Yes , there is a book on Disneyworld pools. Little did I know, until I read this book that there were a lot of swimming pools at Disneyworld. This is a quick informative read. You could spend a whole week checking out the Various Pools at all the Disney "hotels".This ebook gives you previews of the various pools as well as some nice pics. 4/5 SLAYER (south of Heaven) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Making a splash

This is a guide to the amazing swimming pools you can find at the numerous Walt Disney World Resorts, all neatly classified under the following kid-friendly codes:SLD = Yippee! There's a SLIDE at this pool.HOT = The grown-ups will be happy...there's a jacuzzi near the pool.PA = This resort has a play area/jungle gym.KID = Have a younger brother or sister? Good news, there's a shallow KIDDIE pool or splash zone wet play area.B = BEACH ahoy!ZERO = The main pool has ZERO-DEPTH entry, which means the pool gets deeper gradually.QT = There is QUIET POOL at this resort in addition to the main pool.A = This resort has an awesome pool, one of the best on Disney property. It includes full color photographs and descriptions of pools, attractions and eats at:Disney's Polynesian ResortDisney's Grand Floridian Beach Resort & SpaDisney's Contemporary ResortDisney's Wilderness LodgeDisney's Fort... 5/5 Amanda Richards (Georgetown, Guyana) - See all my reviews, March 31, 2012

Informative and helpful with lots of great pictures.

Having bought the Birnbaum book for kids, I thought I would treat myself to the one for adults. The book is very user friendly and the pictures of what I'm about to experience are getting me that much more excited for my trip. Though not as detailed as the Unofficial book, this book feels more like a Cliff's Notes version with pretty images. Everything is pretty clear cut and straight forward but doesn't really give you as much insight than other guides. If you're looking for something easy to read with nice presentation, then this is the book for you. If you are looking for something that's got more depth and insight, then I would purchase the Unofficial Guide by Bob Sehilinger and Len Testa. 4/5 G. A great guide

I'm a regular at Disney World, but I always like to buy this guide before my trips. It is a good reference for information that you need and includes some good tips. I also buy it for the coupons in the back of the book, which if you use them, will more than cover the cost of the book. 5/5 Bryce's Mom "Jennifer" (Charleston, SC USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Review well done.

The Merola family really loves Disneyworld and it shows in this wonderfully written guide. We have just returned from Disney and I couldn't agree more with some of his tips for visiting the theme parks. I did my research, reading all the guides from Birnbaum,Sehlinger and Testa, before departing for Disney.I could have saved a lot of time and money by just following Merola's advice. 5/5 Robert S. It works!

We go to Disney during April break, which is the busiest time of year. If you want to see everything and not wait in long lines, you have to plan your day in the park carefully. This book was so helpful last year. I can't wait to use this new version for this year's trip! 5/5 Pen Name - See all my reviews This review is from: The Busy Family's Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2013 (Paperback) We go to Disney during April break, which is the busiest time of year. Great Anticipation-Builder!

Our in-laws are taking us to Disney in March, and gave this book to our 6 year-old daughter. She has absorbed the book to the point that I think she could deliver guided tours of the parks! She can be sensitive, so we've found the ride ratings (dark, scary, fast, loud) very helpful so we know when to proceed with caution. The book points out several locations in the parks where Hidden Mickeys can be found, so she's really excited to find them when we get there. She has had a few months with the book now, and we think it will really enable her to identify her "must-sees" as we start planning our park days.I highly recommend sharing this book with your children if you're going to go to Disney. It's a lot to take in, with so many parks and attractions, and this helps them process it at their own pace before they're actually there and caught up in the Disney magic. 5/5 adavis - See all my reviews This review is from: Birnbaum's Walt Disney World for Kids 2013 (Paperback) Our in-laws are taking us to Disney in March, and gave this book to our 6 year-old daughter. Excellent travel companion book for children.

Birnbaum's Walt Disney World for Kids 2013 is a guidebook and activity book targeted for children. It is full of colorful pictures and illustrations.I purchased it along with the Unofficial Guide for Walt Disney World with Kids 2013 thinking they would both be similar guides for parents looking to travel with children.I was mistaken. This book is really for children ages 5-12 to carry with them on the trip.It contains activity sections for autographs, things to look for, and ride descriptions. This book is an excellent purchase for budding travel guides and world travelers! 3/5 roberjo (Lagrange, GA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Really good for kids on way to Disney

This book accomplishes two things - it gets the kiddies excited about the planning and upcoming trip - even if it is months away. It also gets them them thinking of what they want to see/do - as well as enjoying the activities inside. 5/5 Monty - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
