Guarding Door County, Lighthouses And Life-saving Stations

Creator: Stacy Thomas, Virginia Thomas | History - 2005-07-13

Jutting out of Wisconsin into the blue waters of Lake Michigan, the scenic peninsula of Door County is endowed with the longest coastline of any county in the nation.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing

About this book
Jutting out of Wisconsin into the blue waters of Lake Michigan, the scenic peninsula of Door County is endowed with the longest coastline of any county in the nation. Since the mid-1800s, the region has boasted a strong maritime industry, dependent on the constant vigilance and efforts of U.S. Coast Guard units. The county has been home to as many as 12 historic light stations, as well as three life-saving stations. Beginning with Pottawatomie Light in 1837 and Sturgeon Bay Canal Life-Saving Station in 1886, keepers and surfmen survived both boredom and peril to ensure safe navigation and commerce, while rescuing those in distress. Through archival photographs, stories ofshipwrecks, rescues, service, and pride spring to life. Rare rescue images of the Otter, a schooner which wrecked in 1895, are especially noteworthy.

About this book
Wildflowers of Door County Wisconsin's Unique Floral Preserve Paul G. Mahlberg and Marilyn Waite Mahlberg A field guide to the wildflowers found in one of the most unusual and beautiful places in America. Door County, Wisconsin, is a place of tremendous scenic beauty and appeal with 250 miles of shoreline, ten lighthouses, five state parks, and over a dozen county parks and conservation areas. Its unequaled number of wildflower species makes it special enough to deserve its own field guide. Despite the fame of Door County and the great diversity of its flora, an adequate book to help outdoor enthusiasts identify its wildflowers has not existed until now. This simple-to-use guide contains nearly 400 watercolors, all painted from Door County specimens. Illustrations are grouped by flower color to aid in recognition; within each group, flowers are arranged in taxonomic order. Labeled drawings of plant parts and a glossary are included. Even the least experienced nature lover will find Wildflowers of Door County an easy and precise guide, while for the wildflower aficionado it provides floral and descriptive details unavailable in other guides. Visitors and residents alike can better experience Door County's wonders and richness with this book in hand. The husband-and-wife team of botanist Paul G. Malhlberg and artist Marilyn Waite Mahlberg were inspired by their love of Door County to locate and write about (Paul) and portray in ink and watercolor (Marilyn) the approximately 375 wildflowers in this field guide. They live in Bloomington, Indiana, during the academic year, where Paul is Emeritus Professor of Biology at Indiana University. In the summer the couple resides in Door County, Wisconsin. Royalties earned from this book will be donated to the Door County Land Trust. May 2001 240 pages, 373 color photos, 5 x 8, bibl., index paper 0-253-21453-X $18.95 t / 14.50

0 5/5 Mary Volmer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Door County Tales: Shipwrecks, Cherries and Goats on the Roof (American Chronicles) (Paperback) Awesome, awesome book! Soucek fills in the blanks to questions left hanging out there by other DC authors like how Hedgehog Harbor got its name. She brings the reader into the book through history, folklore and fact with historic photos and extensive research. Interesting fact: Plum Island is actually within the town of Washington which encompasses Detroit, Hog and Rock Islands. Her writing style uses great imagery and if you haven't physically visited the sites she's mentioned, you have in your mind. She complements the Friends of Plum and Pilot Islands (of which I serve on the board for) in our efforts to rescue and restore the structures on Pilot Island: "The work is costly and difficult, but the group has done a great deal to preserve the historic site." 0 5/5 Jessica Jenks - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Door County Tales: Shipwrecks, Cherries and Goats on the Roof (American Chronicles) (Paperback) I try to get a summary book of places we visit. Door County Tales was a perfect overview of the history and sites of the area. Not a long read but enough to peak interest before a trip and a nice remembrance after a trip. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 26, 2013

This review is from: Door County Tales: Shipwrecks, Cherries and Goats on the Roof (American Chronicles) (Kindle Edition) I read the book just before going to Door County for the first time and I found it extremely interesting and helpful. Even if you aren't going to the area, it is an interesting story about the European stock that settle this rocky peninsula. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 30, 2013

    I'll take Door Number 3

A tiny, ditzy, klutzy author who can't seem to get it right somehow gets herself involved with Major Bad Stuff in upstate Wisconsin. In the tradition of the inept protagonist who manages to solve the mystery despite herself, Annie stumbles through a series of ever-escalating mishaps, falls in love, and changes her own life. A combination mystery/romance, this book features detailed descriptions of Door County and its houses, villages, and landscapes. Obviously the author is familiar with the area, and some of her descriptions stuck with me, like the old, heavy, wooden doors in the Lighthouse Inn.The book follows the standard mystery format, and I appreciate that it's chock-full of female characters. There's a neat juxtaposition of the friendly, caring, loving group of friends who support Annie and the disgusting, malevolent, Uber-Evil women of the Bad Side. However, there are a few issues. The protagonist comes off as somewhat vapid, with her repeated use of "Oh... 3/5 K. A. Krisko (Colorado, USA) - See all my reviews, April 8, 2013

    Messy

0 1/5 Amazon Customer (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Murder in Death's Door County (An Annie Malone Cozy Mystery Book 1) (Kindle Edition) There are some typographical errors and missing words. Not as bad as some books I've read, but enough that I thought this was the reason I couldn't follow the story. Then I realized the author was trying to put different stories together and there was no connection. The characters say their lines without background or continuity. It leaves the reader confused and not really interested. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 9, 2013

    Quirky Mystery

Frustrated with her office job, Annie Malone in a dream like state yells at the thorn in her side, Tessa, politely telling her where to go and hands in her notice. Despite the beer and pizza later that evening, panic sets in - her other (real) job as a ghostwriter is not as lucrative as she'd hoped, so now what? Then she remembers to call her editor Harry back about a new writing job. With a princely sum offered to Annie, Harry asks her to ghostwrite for a man who is somewhat difficult. As she asks more questions, Harry becomes evasive - what is he holding back from her? Jumping at the chance at both the work and the money, Annie agrees. But there's a stipulation - she has to move to Door County as her client, one Marcus Ladrostassis, believes she will have a better feel of his story if she stays in the idyllic county.Moving and living at the Lighthouse Inn, Annie starts her work. But she soon realizes that interviewing Marcus is impossible and that his temper... 4/5 LiniAyre536 (Cambridge, MA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Murder in Death's Door County (An Annie Malone Cozy Mystery Book 1) (Kindle Edition) Frustrated with her office job, Annie Malone in a dream like state yells at the thorn in her side, Tessa, politely telling her where to go and hands in her notice. Another winner in the Val and Kit Series

This is the third installment in The Val & Kit Mystery Series, though one doesn't have to read these books in order to appreciate them. They are all stand alone in nature, but with the characters and antics involved, you'll want to read them all.Again, the authors have impressed me with how well they write as a team. This truly reads like it's written by one person - so if the co-author thing gives you pause, don't let it.Like the other two books, the plot revolves around Val and Kit being thrown into investigating some suspicious deaths. Trouble seems to follow them wherever they go; even a trip to visit Val's mom is Wisconsin isn't exempt from mayhem. Like always, these amateur sleuths piece together what really happened.I liked how this story introduced us to the flesh and blood characters of Jean, William Stuckey and Emily. All three have been mentioned in previous books or been a voice on the other end of the phone. It was nice for them to... 5/5 Alicia Kline - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
