An Anecdote: Last night was a beautiful night. The right temperature. The sun was out. It was perfect. I stepped outside and was instantly set upon by allergens and mosquitos. I spend ten minutes outside just to prove Im man enough to not be driven inside by nature. Then after proving my point that I didnt have to go in, I went in the house.
    As a man.
    Because I wanted too. (Honest.)

Guarding Door County, Lighthouses And Life-saving Stations

Creator: Stacy Thomas, Virginia Thomas | History - 2005-07-13

Jutting out of Wisconsin into the blue waters of Lake Michigan, the scenic peninsula of Door County is endowed with the longest coastline of any county in the nation.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing

About this book
Jutting out of Wisconsin into the blue waters of Lake Michigan, the scenic peninsula of Door County is endowed with the longest coastline of any county in the nation. Since the mid-1800s, the region has boasted a strong maritime industry, dependent on the constant vigilance and efforts of U.S. Coast Guard units. The county has been home to as many as 12 historic light stations, as well as three life-saving stations. Beginning with Pottawatomie Light in 1837 and Sturgeon Bay Canal Life-Saving Station in 1886, keepers and surfmen survived both boredom and peril to ensure safe navigation and commerce, while rescuing those in distress. Through archival photographs, stories ofshipwrecks, rescues, service, and pride spring to life. Rare rescue images of the Otter, a schooner which wrecked in 1895, are especially noteworthy.

About this book
Wildflowers of Door County Wisconsin's Unique Floral Preserve Paul G. Mahlberg and Marilyn Waite Mahlberg A field guide to the wildflowers found in one of the most unusual and beautiful places in America. Door County, Wisconsin, is a place of tremendous scenic beauty and appeal with 250 miles of shoreline, ten lighthouses, five state parks, and over a dozen county parks and conservation areas. Its unequaled number of wildflower species makes it special enough to deserve its own field guide. Despite the fame of Door County and the great diversity of its flora, an adequate book to help outdoor enthusiasts identify its wildflowers has not existed until now. This simple-to-use guide contains nearly 400 watercolors, all painted from Door County specimens. Illustrations are grouped by flower color to aid in recognition; within each group, flowers are arranged in taxonomic order. Labeled drawings of plant parts and a glossary are included. Even the least experienced nature lover will find Wildflowers of Door County an easy and precise guide, while for the wildflower aficionado it provides floral and descriptive details unavailable in other guides. Visitors and residents alike can better experience Door County's wonders and richness with this book in hand. The husband-and-wife team of botanist Paul G. Malhlberg and artist Marilyn Waite Mahlberg were inspired by their love of Door County to locate and write about (Paul) and portray in ink and watercolor (Marilyn) the approximately 375 wildflowers in this field guide. They live in Bloomington, Indiana, during the academic year, where Paul is Emeritus Professor of Biology at Indiana University. In the summer the couple resides in Door County, Wisconsin. Royalties earned from this book will be donated to the Door County Land Trust. May 2001 240 pages, 373 color photos, 5 x 8, bibl., index paper 0-253-21453-X $18.95 t / 14.50

    Complex, well written and researched

I loved this mystery! I rarely read mysteries, but since this one takes place in locations I am very familiar with, I had to try it!I was not disappointed. The story is complex, well researched, and well written. I hope to see more installments from this author in the future, as the primary character has a lot to offer! 5/5 Carter - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Historical allusions add depth to real good read

On the Road to Death's Door opens with a bang, then slows down a bit to establish the laconic feel of an unhurried vacation day. But the characters need a vacation from their vacation after things go horribly awry. The hero, retired police office Emily Remington, finds herself embroiled in the investigation of the murder of a longtime friend in a resort area far from home. Williams' choice to weave into her story a fictional university campus bombing inspired by a real-life tragedy adds emotional power for anyone who remembers the events at the University of Wisconsin forty years ago. But even if you don't know the history, Death's Door keeps your interest with a host of suspects, including a presidential hopeful and powerful men of the cloth, and a smart, independent lead character who unravels the twisty agendas of all the players. The book is impeccably edited and, despite its subject matter, never takes itself too seriously. 5/5 David Thome (Milwaukee) - See all my reviews, January 25, 2012

    On the Road to Murder

This is a winning first mystery novel. Emily Remington, a retired Michigan police officer, and her husband Stan begin a road trip to Boston via Door County Wisconsin in a 32-foot Winnebago inherited from Emily's aunt. Among the first sights they see is a dead body rolling off the roof of their RV. Mixing church and state and local politics, the story reaches back into the sixties and student demonstrations at UW Madison. And more bodies are added, of course. The author has a nice way with dialogue and an eye for setting. The next location looks to be Boston. I plan to be on the road with them. 4/5 Eugene B. BORING! Do They Want Us To Stop Watching?

I think this is the current season being shown? Well, it if is they have run out of steam. Real Housewives Of Foreclosing Orange County at this point. Not fun watching these spoiled broads losing their homes, but the way they were spending, what did they expect?Everyone interesting has bailed this sinking yacht. Unfortunately, Vicki, the loud-rodent-mouthed screamer won't leave until she's dead, it appears. Laurie, the major Gold Digger, has probably been in court with new hubby who I heard had ties to OC Sheriff Corona who was stealing money from the county, I believe. I no longer live in So. Calif.so I can't keep up with the case. So don't believe her when she says the honeymoon was waylaid because of their 7 (adult) kids.Lynn, the anorexic space case who is so sun-damaged her skin resembles tree bark is so boring I have to change the channel when she comes on. Her, like, spoiled daughters, can not, like, put a sentence together without, like, lots of likes... 1/5 Dog Res Q.R. "Dog Res Q.R." Alexis aside, I enjoyed this season!

Real Housewives of Orange County has to be my absolute favourite of all the Housewives shows, its the one I always anticipate while the others are on air (though I do also enjoy Atlanta and Beverly Hills) and with the new season just starting on Bravo it seemed like the right time to add this DVD to my collection.I really enjoyed this season but I can't say I'm a fan of the new lady on the block Alexis Bellino. She just comes off as a hypocrite at times and not all that interesting, her husband seems kind of slimy as well. So of course she happens to be friends with Gretchen whom seems to tell lie after lie and is now with gross Slade. Eww.I really enjoy watching Tamra, Vicki and kooky Lynne on this show though, they really make it a fun and drama filled season with many highlights including Lynne's drama filled cuff party in the opening episode, Vicki's beautiful vow renewal ceremony and seeing Tamra become a strong, independant woman, no longer under her... 5/5 C. If you like Door County, WI, you'll love this book! The pictures are incredible, but they really convey the feeling of the beautiful place Door County is.
