Guarding Door County, Lighthouses and Life-saving Stations

Creator: Stacy Thomas, Virginia Thomas | History - 2005

Jutting out of Wisconsin into the blue waters of Lake Michigan, the scenic peninsula of Door County is endowed with the longest coastline of any county in the nation.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing

About this book
Jutting out of Wisconsin into the blue waters of Lake Michigan, the scenic peninsula of Door County is endowed with the longest coastline of any county in the nation. Since the mid-1800s, the region has boasted a strong maritime industry, dependent on the constant vigilance and efforts of U.S. Coast Guard units. The county has been home to as many as 12 historic light stations, as well as three life-saving stations. Beginning with Pottawatomie Light in 1837 and Sturgeon Bay Canal Life-Saving Station in 1886, keepers and surfmen survived both boredom and peril to ensure safe navigation and commerce, while rescuing those in distress. Through archival photographs, stories ofshipwrecks, rescues, service, and pride spring to life. Rare rescue images of the Otter, a schooner which wrecked in 1895, are especially noteworthy.

This review is from: Door County Coffee Single Serve Cups for Keurig Brewers (Candy Cane, 12 Count) (Grocery) This is awesome coffee!! I was looking for a substitute for Millstone Peppermint (my all-time favorite that they stopped making, for some insane reason!) -- I have tried several different brands, and this is the first that matches up! I ordered more immediately! Highly recommend if you like a candy cane flavor to your coffee. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 23, 2015

5/5 Scubagal (Evanston, IL United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Door County Coffee Single Serve Cups for Keurig Brewers (Candy Cane, 12 Count) (Grocery) As soon as the smell of the coffee brewing started, I liked the aroma! The taste is fantastic and I literally had two cups and went online to buy more because it's a seasonal flavor. The peppermint is soothing and the actual coffee is a very nice medium roast with good flavor. I make a little milk froth and it is AMAZING! I have had 3 or 4 cups now and I have not had any coffee grounds in the coffee as others have complained and even if I did, this coffee tastes so wonderful I would just place cheesecloth or my fine strainer over the cup to catch any grounds. There's no way I'd throw or return to product! It tastes way too good. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 16, 2016

This review is from: Door County Coffee Single Serve Cups for Keurig Brewers (Caramel Pecan Scone, 36 Count) (Grocery) Well, I tried something new, and it doesn't always work out. The flavor of Caramel Pecan Scone is pretty good, but the coffee is a little too bold for my liking, and unfortunately, each and every cup had grounds in the coffee. Yuk. 101 great ideas for ways to fill your days once you're up there.

5/5 Kayak mom (Oshkosh WI) - See all my reviews This review is from: 101 Things to Do in Door County (Paperback) This is a great reference for places to eat, have coffee, go hiking, take photos, to get out and enjoy the Door the way the natives do. We just bought a cottage in Ellison Bay, have been to Door County numerous times, and I sure did learn a lot of new places to go visit and check out. There are places that are well kept secrets by the "natives." Its a great resource for once you're up there and are looking for something to do other than go in the tourist shops. Nothing wrong with that but the Door has so much to offer - naturwise- biking, hiking, kayaking, family activities, etc. We are keeping an extra copy in our cottage for visitors, and hoping it doesn't get taken! Interesting Mystery With Colorful Characters

This book got off to a slow start. Not a lover of description, I found myself reading about all kinds of traditionally masculine areas--the manner in which a man had his workshop arranged, the way in which a man went about building a sailboat, and it seemed to me that not one person ever ate or drank anything without the reader having to know what happened to the cake crumbs or the empty cans! The more mundane description made the description of the sights and sounds of Door County seem almost heavenly, even though I'm not generally a lover of descriptions of God's handiwork. My eyes tend to glaze over if there are too many descriptions of water, flowers, and trees. Somewhere around a quarter of the way into the book things started to happen. By the time I was halfway through I was really becoming absorbed in the story. Finally I had to read it to the end because I was so curious to find out the cause of the deaths of three war heroes--an incident that appeared to be an accident but... 4/5 Donna Hill - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Door County, Dave Cubiak--what a story!

In this book, Skalka has written a love affair with Door County as she portrays every nuanced lay of the land. We make our acquaintance to this place, the voice and character of the people by her keen ear and her vivid observation. And while we see the genuine nature of these people and the sheer marvel of their country, Skalka digs deep into social and community complexities that are, as they say, stranger than fiction. And Cubiak is back. In this book he has softened up around some previous raw edges. Now we see his quick sense of humor and his authentic penchant for true friendship. His hard wired integrity keeps his life uncluttered and he tries to keep his life simple. Yet there is a wild ride brewing for him with murder running deep.Skalka’s refined style and passion for knotty characterization, her innate storytelling and sense of wonder bring us another Cubiak mystery that reels with energy and invention. The intricate undercurrent... 5/5 Carol Moffat - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A Great Read

5/5 Lily Vallee (Northern USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Death at Gills Rock: A Dave Cubiak Door County Mystery (Kindle Edition) It was fun to read a mystery set in a place I know pretty well. Some of the characters in the story were almost familiar. You think you know which way this is going to go but then, it slides sideways into another scenario. I really enjoyed reading the Dave Cubiak mysteries. I've read them all. The real star of the book really is Door County itself. It is a beautiful place with an air of darkness about it that lends well to Skalka's writing. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 5, 2017
