Guarding Door County, Lighthouses And Life-saving Stations

Creator: Stacy Thomas, Virginia Thomas | History - 2005-07-13

Jutting out of Wisconsin into the blue waters of Lake Michigan, the scenic peninsula of Door County is endowed with the longest coastline of any county in the nation.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing

About this book
Jutting out of Wisconsin into the blue waters of Lake Michigan, the scenic peninsula of Door County is endowed with the longest coastline of any county in the nation. Since the mid-1800s, the region has boasted a strong maritime industry, dependent on the constant vigilance and efforts of U.S. Coast Guard units. The county has been home to as many as 12 historic light stations, as well as three life-saving stations. Beginning with Pottawatomie Light in 1837 and Sturgeon Bay Canal Life-Saving Station in 1886, keepers and surfmen survived both boredom and peril to ensure safe navigation and commerce, while rescuing those in distress. Through archival photographs, stories ofshipwrecks, rescues, service, and pride spring to life. Rare rescue images of the Otter, a schooner which wrecked in 1895, are especially noteworthy.

About this book
Wildflowers of Door County Wisconsin's Unique Floral Preserve Paul G. Mahlberg and Marilyn Waite Mahlberg A field guide to the wildflowers found in one of the most unusual and beautiful places in America. Door County, Wisconsin, is a place of tremendous scenic beauty and appeal with 250 miles of shoreline, ten lighthouses, five state parks, and over a dozen county parks and conservation areas. Its unequaled number of wildflower species makes it special enough to deserve its own field guide. Despite the fame of Door County and the great diversity of its flora, an adequate book to help outdoor enthusiasts identify its wildflowers has not existed until now. This simple-to-use guide contains nearly 400 watercolors, all painted from Door County specimens. Illustrations are grouped by flower color to aid in recognition; within each group, flowers are arranged in taxonomic order. Labeled drawings of plant parts and a glossary are included. Even the least experienced nature lover will find Wildflowers of Door County an easy and precise guide, while for the wildflower aficionado it provides floral and descriptive details unavailable in other guides. Visitors and residents alike can better experience Door County's wonders and richness with this book in hand. The husband-and-wife team of botanist Paul G. Malhlberg and artist Marilyn Waite Mahlberg were inspired by their love of Door County to locate and write about (Paul) and portray in ink and watercolor (Marilyn) the approximately 375 wildflowers in this field guide. They live in Bloomington, Indiana, during the academic year, where Paul is Emeritus Professor of Biology at Indiana University. In the summer the couple resides in Door County, Wisconsin. Royalties earned from this book will be donated to the Door County Land Trust. May 2001 240 pages, 373 color photos, 5 x 8, bibl., index paper 0-253-21453-X $18.95 t / 14.50

Dave Cubiak the anti-hero, smarter than the way-above- average- murderer.

In a snarled mystery knotted up along the picturesque, Wisconsin vacation spot of Door County, Skalka balances this dark tale on an intricate thread. It weaves through the personal tragedies of myriad lives and events. This beautifully crafted work creates a stark backdrop of a rich, scenic and historical tableau, both evidence of keen research and sharp insight. It is, however, the power of Skalka's voice that moves this story to it's depths. From our hero Cubiak's expletives to his friend Malcom's promise of prayers and from 6 brutal murders, to pastor Waldo and Gladys Thorenson kneeling at the church alter offering up forgiveness, the expressions of both the sane and insane speak riddles. And the riddles are of broken lives. Lives that have made all the wrong choices and also of folks that have been noble despite it all, that tell the complexities and the anguish of loss.Dave Cubiak is a former cop trying to start over in the Wisconsin wilderness after calamity has... 5/5 Carol Moffat - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A Realistic and Gritty Mystery

Do you ever google people from your past? I do. Recently when I discovered that Patricia Skalka, a fellow Chicagoan, came out with her first work of fiction last year, I decided that I had to read it despite the fact that I now prefer memoirs to mysteries. But this is a mystery with heart. Dave Cubiak, a veteran of the Chicago police force and widower who lost both a wife and daughter tragically, has been called to Door County, Wisconsin, a Midwest vacation mecca, to help solve a murder. Before he knows it, there is a string of murders to solve. His primary problem is his lack of caring--he can't develop the determination to solve the crimes until he can replace at least some of his hurt with empathy for the people of Door County. He feels ready to return to Chicago when a chance encounter--a tender experience if you will--leads to his determination to solve the crimes that plague the residents of this formerly peaceful town. This story has all the elements that... 4/5 Donna Hill - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Mystery Debut from Patricia Skalka...Also Introduces Great Vacation Location!

Ever been to Wisconsin? I haven't, but after reading this book it sounds like a wonderful place to consider for a vacation! I'll tell you more later... But be prepared to learn about the setting of the series... It reminded me of Nevada Barr, who as a forest ranger always shared about the particular state forest at which she was stationed...And, yes, our main character, Dave Cubiak, starts out working as a ranger, but by the end of the book, he's back as a cop!The killer might have taken the tour of the State Park and planned to later take his victim up to the top of Eagle Tower, or maybe it had been an accidental meeting... But by the time the autopsy had been done, some considered it the first murder, even if the sheriff had declared it an accident and did little further investigation.Cubiak seemed to be right back where he had been prior to his relocation to Wisconsin as his partner and friend had suggested. They both thought that a short stint away was... 5/5 Amazon Customer "Glenda" (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews This review is from: Death Stalks Door County: A Dave Cubiak Door County Mystery (Kindle Edition) Ever been to Wisconsin? An Elegant Book

First of all, I highly recommend Door County, WI to anyone looking for a place to visit in the Midwest. I've been traveling there on occasion for the past 20 or so years. The county is a peninsula between Lake Michigan and Green Bay, which are expansive Great Lake fresh water environments. Overall, it's more of an intimate destination, dominated by rocky coasts and outcrops near the water that are complemented by a provincial rural setting inland from the lake, bay and harbors. It's a outstanding place for families and couples to explore and experience the outdoors, history, wildlife, people, entertainment, parks, food and other excellent local events and activities. The book is quality printed, nicely sized, not too hefty. A perfect coffee table and conversation book. This is the first iteration of this book in 2013, where an online community of photographers (amateur and professional) mostly crowd-sourced the content, by submitting photos to be considered and... 5/5 Keeffer - See all my reviews This review is from: Capture Door County: Fine-Art Photography of Door County, Wisconsin (Hardcover) First of all, I highly recommend Door County, WI to anyone looking for a place to visit in the Midwest. 0 5/5 Mary Volmer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Door County Tales:: Shipwrecks, Cherries and Goats on the Roof (American Chronicles) (Paperback) Awesome, awesome book! Soucek fills in the blanks to questions left hanging out there by other DC authors like how Hedgehog Harbor got its name. She brings the reader into the book through history, folklore and fact with historic photos and extensive research. Interesting fact: Plum Island is actually within the town of Washington which encompasses Detroit, Hog and Rock Islands. Her writing style uses great imagery and if you haven't physically visited the sites she's mentioned, you have in your mind. She complements the Friends of Plum and Pilot Islands (of which I serve on the board for) in our efforts to rescue and restore the structures on Pilot Island: "The work is costly and difficult, but the group has done a great deal to preserve the historic site."
