Fort Lauderdale, The Venice Of America

Creator: Susan Gillis | History - 2004-12-01

Discusses the history of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from the 1890's through the 1990's.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing

About this book
Taking its name from a fortification established more than 160 years ago during the Second Seminole War, Fort Lauderdale boasts a history stretching back 5,000 years before the first white settlers arrived in the eighteenth century. From beautiful tales of the "mysterious" New River that helped launch the community to more recent stories of rum running and gambling, segregation and integration, and boom and bust, the history of this Florida city is told here through the everyday lives of those who lived it.

Fort Lauderdale, The Journal of Florida Artist Rupert W. Miles

Creator: Man Morrow, Rupert W. Miles | 2006-12-31

A "must read" for art historians.

Publisher: Man Morrow

About this book
A "must read" for art historians. Clear testament to the strange paradox that genius need not necessarily be inhibited by madness. It is believed that the same hurricane that killed the five hundred men on the Flagler System oversea railroad project in 1926 also killed as many as two thousand migrant farm workers, can cutters, in the sugarcane fields of South Florida. All the mother fucking rain had caused a hellish flood that submerged the entire region during the night. The identities and exact number of victims from the flood were never known because many of them were foreign, Haitians and Dominicans mostly, and they were all dirt poor. Around here at least, if you're dirt poor, nobody gives a fuck what happens to you, especially during the night. (p. 159)

Some good information here, but certainly not comprehensive

This guide could use some pictures and liveliness. The history of Ft. Lauderdale was interesting to read, but it could be better organized and clearer about what the guidebook writers recommend in terms of restaurants, etc. 3/5 D. Rhoney - See all my reviews, December 11, 2012

    Good Basic Review Guide

This guidebook is a good place for an out-of-towner to see some of the highlights of Broward County. We have frequented Greater Ft Lauderdale 5 or 6 times a year for the past 3-4 years and have found a lot of the spots the authors pick as good choices for families, couples and singles. They offer a good overall perspective on the area. We particularly thought the review of the real estate market was spot on. Of course there are some true favorites for us that are not listed, and some choices the authors pick that we are not impressed with... but that I think is the norm for any guidebook. We bought the ebook Kindle version of this book - a little difficult to navigate, but gets the job done. The one "misleading" feature of the book is that the cover gives the impression that it would contain more content for gay travelers (The cover picture is of the entrance to Sebastian Beach - THE gay epicenter of the beach scene in Ft.Lauderdale - and there is a rainbow banner on... 4/5 Greater Ft Lauderdale Frequent Visitor - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Rating (1 reviews):

    Too confusing, no maps

I've lived here for 35 years and I know where these locations are, and this guide is pretty poor. The historical information is brief but accurate, however, the walking directions are confusing (even to a local) and they do not include any maps to show you the route. Most walking tours I have seen have easy to follow maps. The route is also not very well thought out, it's sort of a mess. It also misses some interesting features along Riverwalk. Don't waste your money. Just start at the Performing Arts center and proceed east and follow along the historical district, which also includes Broward Blvd. Why they listed those ugly high rises in the tour I will never know. Just look up, seen it, who cares, they're just ordinary. 2/5 DebbWel "Mystery Lover" (Florida) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
