The best travel book I've read so far!

Normally, I try to avoid these "Dummies" guides, as I'm just the slightest bit offended by the idea that I'm a "dummy" just because I don't know EVERYTHING. But after flipping through books at the local bookstore looking for a good guidebook for my honeymoon trip to Oahu and Kauai next October, I finally decided on this one. It's got great maps, for one thing, as well as extensive lists of hotels, places to eat, and things to do. Because the descriptions are full of personal anecdotes, I really trust that Leas has seen and done it all herself and she's being straight with me about what she thinks -- traditional travel guides always make me nervous because they're written in the third person. If I'm going to spend ... on a vacation, I really want to know what things I should do and what things I shouldn't! Possibly the greatest feature, though, is the fact that at least 75% of the entries for places and activities have web site URLs. Even though the book is... 5/5 Meg Brunner (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Hawaii For Dummies (Dummies Travel) (Paperback) Normally, I try to avoid these "Dummies" guides, as I'm just the slightest bit offended by the idea that I'm a "dummy" just because I don't know EVERYTHING. A Very Good General Reference

"Hawaii For Dummies" is a good general reference, especially for first time visitors to Hawaii. I visit Hawaii on business about four times a month, and have found the information in this guide to be generally quite accurate. In any guidebook there are obviously things that are out of date, and that's especially true in a guide this compendious. Most of the inaccuracies are prices that have increased, though in my personal experiences none of the increases I have seen has been ridiculously out of line with inflation. I find that the diagrams are good for general planning, but a dedicated map of the island you are visiting is necessary for navigation. The book has several useful features including the Post-It flags to mark pages of interest (a very useful feature) and a "Quick Concierge" section in the Appendix which is a quick reference to important phone numbers and Internet addresses. The book discusses customs, weather, selecting things to see, and choosing an island. I... 4/5 Robert I. Hedges - See all my reviews, December 22, 2006

The best travel book I've ever owned

I have traveled a lot, and own a lot of travel books, but have never felt compelled to write a review of one-- until now.Three years ago, while planning our two-week honeymoon to Maui and Kauai, I bought a LOT of Hawaii books. In the planning stage, I kept finding myself returning to this book. Unlike Fodors and Frommers, the author actually makes JUDGMENTS about places and activities and tells you what the BEST of each category are. Imagine that-- rather than just providing a rote listing of the hotels on an island with a short description (and maybe a star or two), the author actually tells you which hotels to go to if you want serious romance, which are best for families, and which rooms to request (or not). Rather than listing activities, the author actually tells you which are the safest and most reliable helicopter companies, which are the best companies to to take for a private, romantic and uncrowded sailing trip. There are "heart" symbols to denote the most... 5/5 BostonMama (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Lonely Planet

Hawaii resident review....pretty good, but don't rely on just this book.

Covering all the islands in one book is a large task, but Lonely Planet does a good job, particularly noting hiking trails, beaches, and other natural sites of interest. There are good, detailed maps; websites, prices and hours are listed; and interesting history notes are included. However, I would recommend that a visitor not rely on just this book alone when visiting. In looking at the areas I am most familiar with (Central, North Shore, Laie area, Hawaii Volcanoes Nat'l Park, and Pearl Harbor) I noticed a number of eating, shopping, or tourist areas were left out that visitors might enjoy. The index is not very extensive and leaves out quite a number sites. It is difficult to cover it all, I know, but I had to resort to searching through the book page by page for most things- this would be even more frustrating if a visitor was not sure where a particular place is.Visitors need to do their research before arriving, checking out the areas they wish to visit... 4/5 Patricia (United States) - See all my reviews, December 1, 2013

    Encyclopedic guide to Hawaii

Encyclopedic guide to Hawaii! This guide will serve both the person trying to decide if to visit Hawaii and if so, where, as well as the person on their trip figuring out where to eat and where to drive to next. It covers all the islands, and helps you decide which islands to visit pretty well. Hotels, restaurants, sites, and roadtrip itineraries were all well-described. It even gives the details that most books would skip. I can recall the description of a small village, where, it said, the villagers do not appreciate visitors. Most guides would fail to mention the location at all. Lonely Planet Hawaii helps you so that if you DO end up there, you know the deal and understand why people aren't being as friendly as they are elsewhere. In the beginning, numerous itineraries are offered for all sorts of travel styles and lengths of stay. In the back, as with all Lonely Planet guides, there is extensive practical information that applies to the entire set of islands... 5/5 Amazon Customer "Nepenthe" (Arlington, MA United States) - See all my reviews, December 1, 2013

    Excellent guidebook

I ordered this guidebook, Lonely Planet Hawaii, because my husband and I took an all-too-short trip to Hawaii earlier this year, and we are both eager to go back and experience our 50th state in a little more depth than we did the first time around. I was hoping that this guidebook would help, and I was not disappointed.Hawaii is a beautiful and complex state, and this guide covers just about every aspect of it: people, culture, history, natural resources, ecology, and cuisine, to name just a few. The book helps the reader plan a trip based on his or her individual interests, whether they are artistic, historical, or nature-oriented. There are the usual "Where to Stay" and "Where to Eat" features, as well as some "Don't Miss This" features as well. If you are traveling with children, this book includes several child-friendly attractions to help you plan a trip that the entire family can enjoy. The book includes an up-to-date driving map that includes each island,... 5/5 K. Blaine (Peninsula, OH USA) - See all my reviews, October 22, 2013

The Big Island is a BIG Island

The Big Island is not like the other islands in the Hawaiian Chain. A traveller can get a pretty good overview of the other islands with a one-day driving trip but the Big Island is much too large and too diverse to attempt in one day. This book breaks the Island sightseeing down into areas that can each be reasonably explored in one day. If you arrive by cruise ship there are walking tours for each of the cruise ship arrival points. If you are renting a car there are driving tours efficiently laid out to maximize your touring time. Along with the tours there are short historical notes that coincide with the sites and give much depth to the significance of the locations. Chris and Tyler seem to have thoroughly researched and personally visited the locations that they describe and in this book they assess the ease of access to each site for those with limited time or mobility issues. This book, along with the others in their "Your Ideal..." series is a valuable tool, easy to... 5/5 hammock at honl's - See all my reviews This review is from: Your Ideal Hawaii Island Vacation: A Guide for Visiting the Big Island of Hawaii (Paperback) The Big Island is not like the other islands in the Hawaiian Chain. The best guidebook for the Big Island

0 5/5 Elizabeth Cooper - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Your Ideal Hawaii Island Vacation: A Guide for Visiting the Big Island of Hawaii (Paperback) This book is the most user friendly guidebook I have experienced. It is an easy read that takes you to points of interest that are accessible, yet not overly crowded. The tidbits of history, lore and narrative draw you into the experiences transforming you into an active participant rather than a mere observer. A "must read" for the traveler to the Big Island! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 17, 2014

WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT: Seeking a guidebook which covers all the districts of the Big Island, combines gotta-see highlights with intriguing out-of-the-way places, history and lore, and is appropriate for visitors who are active but not ready to climb Everest or do the Ironman? One focusing not on eating, sleeping, and shopping but on interesting places & events? This is it!The Merciers offer ten chapters including Kona (60 pages), Kohala (15 pages), Hilo (40 pages), Volcanoes National Park (13 pages), Kau (16 pages), Puna (15 pages), North Kohala (16 pages) and Waimea (8 pages). Each chapter has visitor-useful maps with landmarks where the signage for turns is obscure and, a big plus, details on events and festivals throughout the year for each location. For myself, I want a guide book packed with ideas, stories, information, and unusual as well as usual places. Where to drink, shop, party-hearty, and sleep are for me less urgent in book form. Froggy is ok, but the author???

0 3/5 Tony - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Froggy Goes to Hawaii (Paperback) My toddler enjoys this book, and he likes to spell out some of the letters. The illustration is fine, too. We this bought for him as he asked for a surfing book. Compared to other children's books, I don't enjoy the authors writing style. Examples are, after causing some mischief the author declares Froggy's Dad too pooped to pop(???). The father, after Froggy acts out regularly declares, "Froggy, when we get to Hawaii..." To which, Froggy replies "I know." What, ground him, put him in time out... Worse??? Unknown. It's just a kids book, but there are better authors out there. After all, parents do have to read these things over and over. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 12, 2013

    Brilliant!

0 5/5 Melissa Angcon - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Hawaii Revealed - Learn To Travel To Hawaii On A Budget (Kindle Edition) I love this book! It provides brilliant strategies on how to save money while having fun in Hawaii. I like the realistic approach to saving money and not missing the fun. This book provides great tips from choosing the best time to avail the cheapest ticket to Hawaii and the best day to travel. What I like most among all the tips mentioned in this book is getting a room with a kitchen and cooking instead of eating in a restaurant, to me this is the most sensible kind of advice, eating out will cost too much and not very safe as well, and I haven't came across a travel guide book that has the same advice on saving money as this book. This book also will show you not just how to save but also how to have fun in Hawaii, the things to do and see. I must say that this book is brilliant, just brilliant! If you want some travel tips as great as this, I highly recommend this book. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 1, 2015
