    Lonely Planet

Hawaii resident review....pretty good, but don't rely on just this book.

Covering all the islands in one book is a large task, but Lonely Planet does a good job, particularly noting hiking trails, beaches, and other natural sites of interest. There are good, detailed maps; websites, prices and hours are listed; and interesting history notes are included. However, I would recommend that a visitor not rely on just this book alone when visiting. In looking at the areas I am most familiar with (Central, North Shore, Laie area, Hawaii Volcanoes Nat'l Park, and Pearl Harbor) I noticed a number of eating, shopping, or tourist areas were left out that visitors might enjoy. The index is not very extensive and leaves out quite a number sites. It is difficult to cover it all, I know, but I had to resort to searching through the book page by page for most things- this would be even more frustrating if a visitor was not sure where a particular place is.Visitors need to do their research before arriving, checking out the areas they wish to visit... 4/5 Patricia (United States) - See all my reviews, December 1, 2013

    Encyclopedic guide to Hawaii

Encyclopedic guide to Hawaii! This guide will serve both the person trying to decide if to visit Hawaii and if so, where, as well as the person on their trip figuring out where to eat and where to drive to next. It covers all the islands, and helps you decide which islands to visit pretty well. Hotels, restaurants, sites, and roadtrip itineraries were all well-described. It even gives the details that most books would skip. I can recall the description of a small village, where, it said, the villagers do not appreciate visitors. Most guides would fail to mention the location at all. Lonely Planet Hawaii helps you so that if you DO end up there, you know the deal and understand why people aren't being as friendly as they are elsewhere. In the beginning, numerous itineraries are offered for all sorts of travel styles and lengths of stay. In the back, as with all Lonely Planet guides, there is extensive practical information that applies to the entire set of islands... 5/5 Amazon Customer "Nepenthe" (Arlington, MA United States) - See all my reviews, December 1, 2013

    Excellent guidebook

I ordered this guidebook, Lonely Planet Hawaii, because my husband and I took an all-too-short trip to Hawaii earlier this year, and we are both eager to go back and experience our 50th state in a little more depth than we did the first time around. I was hoping that this guidebook would help, and I was not disappointed.Hawaii is a beautiful and complex state, and this guide covers just about every aspect of it: people, culture, history, natural resources, ecology, and cuisine, to name just a few. The book helps the reader plan a trip based on his or her individual interests, whether they are artistic, historical, or nature-oriented. There are the usual "Where to Stay" and "Where to Eat" features, as well as some "Don't Miss This" features as well. If you are traveling with children, this book includes several child-friendly attractions to help you plan a trip that the entire family can enjoy. The book includes an up-to-date driving map that includes each island,... 5/5 K. Blaine (Peninsula, OH USA) - See all my reviews, October 22, 2013

    A planning guide without peer

In my work at Guide to Travel Guides, we concentrate on finding excellent travel books from smaller publishers, books that travelers may not yet be familiar with. No Worries Hawaii, newly published in late 2007, is just such a book. Really a travel planning guide without peer. Its 160 pages are fabulous stuff, chocked full of helpful information and some of the loveliest color photos around. If you play ball with the Sprouts, they'll help you zero in on the greatest island vacation you've ever had. The Sprouts are veterans of the Hawaii guidebook scene. Their deservedly much-praised Trailblazer series includes four titles on the islands of Hawaii: Kauai Trailblazer, Maui Trailblazer, Oahu Trailblazer, and Hawaii the Big Island Trailblazer, all of which focus on outdoor activities of every kind: walks, hikes, bicycle rides, snorkeling, driving tours and on and on. In No Worries Hawaii they use their expertise to help you decide the type of vacation you want, the setting you want, the... 5/5 Greg Hayes (Carson City, NV United States) - See all my reviews, December 3, 2007

Terrific book for preplanning a trip to Hawaii

0 5/5 Amazon Customer (New Jersey) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: No Worries Hawaii: A Vacation Planning Guide for Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island (Paperback) This book is terrific for preplanning a trip to Hawaii. The author gives great descriptions of the islands and their attractions but what makes this an outstanding book is his approach to planning your trip. There is an analysis of the different type of travelers and an overview of lodging styles. The best section is his `test' of your interests to determine which island has the sights that really matter to you. He includes everything from picnicking to snorkeling to religious shrines to volcano watching to horseback riding and more. With his lists, I was able to prioritize what I wanted to see and what islands to visit. It also told me where I needed a rental car and where I did not. He has a lot of helpful telephone numbers and beautiful photographs. If you want a lot of detail about hotels and activities, I would go online. But, if you want to look at the big picture first and get your bearings, start with this book. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 14, 2008

Froggy is ok, but the author???

0 3/5 Tony - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Froggy Goes to Hawaii (Paperback) My toddler enjoys this book, and he likes to spell out some of the letters. The illustration is fine, too. We this bought for him as he asked for a surfing book. Compared to other children's books, I don't enjoy the authors writing style. Examples are, after causing some mischief the author declares Froggy's Dad too pooped to pop(???). The father, after Froggy acts out regularly declares, "Froggy, when we get to Hawaii..." To which, Froggy replies "I know." What, ground him, put him in time out... Worse??? Unknown. It's just a kids book, but there are better authors out there. After all, parents do have to read these things over and over. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 12, 2013

The Big Island is a BIG Island

The Big Island is not like the other islands in the Hawaiian Chain. A traveller can get a pretty good overview of the other islands with a one-day driving trip but the Big Island is much too large and too diverse to attempt in one day. This book breaks the Island sightseeing down into areas that can each be reasonably explored in one day. If you arrive by cruise ship there are walking tours for each of the cruise ship arrival points. If you are renting a car there are driving tours efficiently laid out to maximize your touring time. Along with the tours there are short historical notes that coincide with the sites and give much depth to the significance of the locations. Chris and Tyler seem to have thoroughly researched and personally visited the locations that they describe and in this book they assess the ease of access to each site for those with limited time or mobility issues. Best Source of Nonfiction Writing, Written in an Easy to Read Style. A Great Book for Moving to Hawai'i.

Length: 132 pages. This is probably the best-written $2.99 book I have read on Kindle. The writer expresses his thoughts with a light touch, but with the wisdom of someone who learned from his experience. His advice to subscribe to local newspapers is spot on. Unfortunately, the newspaper he mentions requires flash, which, alas, is not available for iPad. Thus, I will read this paper using Safari on the web.I should note I bought this book primarily because I often fancy that I would like to live on the Big Island, where this author lives. My biggest hurdle is the fact we have three cats and a dog. Hawai'i is so protective against importing an animal with rabies that moving with so many animals can be a difficult, costly, challenge. I've researched the issue and do understand the prospects. What strikes me is that the writer moved to the Big Island with two dogs and a cat, so he understands from experience.
