Hotel Room Trilogy

Creator: Barry Gifford | 1995-04-01

From the author of Arise and Walk and Wild at Heart, a trio of one-act plays depicting the spooky, strange, and tragic passage of guests through the same hotel room

Publisher: Univ. Press of Mississippi

About this book
In this collection of three plays set in the same hotel room, award-winning novelist Barry Gifford brings his highly acclaimed writing to the theater for the first time.In "Tricks" Moe and Lou share Darlene, a hooker they pass back and forth as they exchange and appropriate each other's identities in alternating moments of confusion and revelation. In "Blackout" Danny and Diane, an Oklahoma couple of the 1930s, cannot move beyond the grief of a personal tragedy. Refusing to accept the death of her son, Diane seeks refuge in low-level deliriums. In the third play, "Mrs. Kashfi," a young boy experiences a spooky visitation while his mother voyages into the sea of clairvoyance with a fortune teller.

    Great new series!

Cecily Sinclair is the owner of the Pennyfoot Hotel, a charming little place on the seaside of England. Her husband, recently deceased, has left her to care for their much beloved little hotel, recently discovered by the London upper-crust for their weekend jaunts to the seashore in the summer of 1906.When Lady Eleanor Danbury's battered body is discovered in the shrubbery, she is thought to be a victim of a 4-story fall from the lovely rooftop garden directly above.Needless to say, all the current guests of the Pennyfoot become suspect, and most have some sort of reason for wanting Lady Danbury dead. It's up to Cecily and her trusted, yet fussy, hotel manager Baxter to identify the killer (local police are not that bright) and save the reputation of the Pennyfoot Hotel. This is the first in a series of 12 books and I had a terrific time reading this first installation. The characters are sweet and endearing, and even the wacky, minor characters are quite... 5/5 Anthony P Perrotta - See all my reviews This review is from: Room with a Clue (Pennyfoot Hotel Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback) Cecily Sinclair is the owner of the Pennyfoot Hotel, a charming little place on the seaside of England. Charming

I was participating in a discussion board about a year and a half ago here on Amazon and the topic was cozy mysteries set at Christmas time. The yearly holiday books from this series kept coming up and many, many people recommended them. Since I have found that most mysteries are better if read in order, I went back to pick up this first one, "Room with a Clue". Having just finished it last night, I must say that the discussion group did not steer me wrong.Set in southeastern England in 1906, Cecily Sinclair is the owner of a seaside hotel called the Pennyfoot Hotel. She is the sole owner of the hotel after becoming a widow six months previously. She has a manager, Baxter, who plays a heavy role in running the hotel but his idea of what a proper lady should do is different from Cecily's. She is very progressive in her ideas about women's equality and that doesn't' necessarily set well with the more conservative manager's ideas. The hotel has been discovered by... 4/5 Holly "Book addict" (Indiana, USA) - See all my reviews, August 16, 2012

    Love the Pennyfoot Hotel Series

0 5/5 Edwina - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Room with a Clue (Pennyfoot Hotel Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback) I happened upon one of the Pennyfoot Christmas tales and became hooked in this locale and time period. The characters were quite interesting and I found it a light and informative read. I have now read all the Christmas books and have begun accumulating the others in the series. The first two in the original series were a little predictable but again, the characters are too fun and who cares if the plots are a little iffy now and then! I love the descriptions of hotel events and I wish I could sit down to a meal in their dining room. I would even put up with the Colonel! Speaking of which I can't wait to read how he and Phoebe ever got together. I adore Phoebe and envy her the hats. Cecily is my kind of gal. Cigars indeed... For pure escapism with a touch of nostalgia, these books can't be beat. Anxiously awaiting the newest Christmas saga AND the four of the earlier Pennyfoot books I have on order. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 6, 2010

This review is from: 28 Hotel Rooms (Amazon Instant Video) I liked the fact that they showed the realistic side of an affair...both the good and the bad. I also liked how they showed their interactions progress from one night stand to an actual relationship. Lots flof steamy sex scenes, however, it doesnt take away from the film. A Tryst (or 29) of Two Lives

"28 Hotel Rooms", a Matt Ross film starring Marin Ireland and Chris Messina, starts with a "chocolate explosion" slice of sex in a hotel room. The sex is heated, nameless, youthful, all sweat and raw nakedness. And then there's another hotel room, then another, and another, and more after that. Each room has a different number, as they meet in different places, one being a novelist, the other a rising businesswoman.I've played with the notion that the room numbers MEAN something, but I'm probably wrong.Three movies came to mind as I watched this seductive entrancing movie."Same Time, Next Year", "When Harry Met Sally", and "9 Songs"."Sally" because it follows the same pattern of watching an evolving relationship through the passing years."Same Time" for basically the same reason, as it comes closest to that 1978 film starring Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn."9 Songs" because of the erotic sexual nature of what is basically a series of... 4/5 Aaron J. Messina homerun again !!!

O.K., I admit it, Chris Messina is one of my favorite actors. In this film, he also executive produces (whatever that means). In any event, what a story--I kept thinking this is so "French," a couple, one married, one not and they carry-on a relationship (he finally marries) which has something, they both don't know what, that endures for years--French, right? It is a bit of a role reversal in that the male (Messina), towards the end, wants more and the female is content (even with a child--his child?) to keep things as they are--yet, it isn't just the great sex they have, it is more layered than that--and this is where it may depart from the French formula. In France, we expect that the extramarital relationship is mostly cultural, a rite of passage, etc. In this film, the relationship becomes more--a lot more. Watching these two actors is fascinating. For the most part, their hotel meetings are almost always eagerly awaited, fun, flirty, improvised. And while there are some... 4/5 Craig Haynes (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A Cool Oasis of Relaxation!

Here in New England we generally add humidity to our indoor atmosphere only in the winter when our heating systems dry out everything. Most of the year it is beyond humid with some summer days approaching 100% humidity! It is the same on much of the East Coast, but if you've ever been out West, then you will be familiar with the idea of a swamp cooler, where instead of removing moisture from the environment like the air conditioners that we use here do, a fan blows through a wet filter to chill the interior of your home. When this arrived last week on one of the hottest days of summer thus far I cringed at the thought of adding still more moisture to the air. Nonetheless, I soldiered on because I always test everything - and was I ever delightfully surprised! I set... 5/5 Grandma (Vermont, USA) - See all my reviews, July 23, 2014

Great little humidifier / aromatherapy unit with a fun, soothing light show ...

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:45 MinsI've been somewhat hesitant to even look at this little humidifier with the excessive humidity in these past few weeks. I've finally gotten around to plugging in it and frankly, it's going to be one of those little gems I'll appreciate during the winter months. Every now and then the humidity is so low during the winter, it's actually uncomfortable. The Ivation is actually quite small, but spews the moisture into the air at a rather rapid pace. It's not quite the same as a large humidifier, but gently and consistently moisturizes a small area.I have a bit of lilac spritzer with essential oils in it and I put a bit in the tank. This little unit doesn't need a lot, but rather a two or three drops of any essential oil of choice will do the trick. I had another diffuser and when I added too much, it was quite overwhelming. The light scent wafted through the room quite nicely while spreading a lovely mist. I decided I'd enjoy the light show, a... 5/5 D. Fowler - See all my reviews, August 9, 2014

Humidifier with Aromatherapy in smallest design I ever saw

Its a very sleek and compact design so its really a handy travel humidifier. I filled it up to its max and worked almost thru the whole night.I used it as night light at the same time. Was very nice and elegant white LED light with perfect glow. And yes, I bought a lavender scented oil and dropped in a 3 to 4 drops and I had an amazing Aromatherapy diffusion to knock some stress outa me. And the 7 color changing lights served as a perfect mood lamp. Was so relaxing. All I can say a great humidifier with aromatherapy suitable for all ages and circumstances.I'm planning a trip next month to overseas will definitely take it along with me for my hotel room would be a great idea for germs alimentation and night light and so on. All I can say it was a great buy and very satisfied with it, recommend to all of you folks out there. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 1, 2014

Yeah, well, they can't all be winners...

Let me say this first: Kate Kingsbury is one of my favorite authors, and the Pennyfoot books are some of my favorite mysteries. Kingsbury outdoes herself with sympathetic characters, intriguing puzzles, and interesting period details......most of the time. This book isn't *bad,* but it's not up to the standards of the rest of this excellent series. My main quibble is with the two main characters who seem to be doing everything in their power not to act like themselves. Cecily Sinclair, owner of the Pennyfoot and amateur sleuth, seems to have a positive death-wish at times as she consistently breaks this promise to her manager and sweetheart, Baxter: that if she undertakes a murder investigation, she will inform him of her doings. Does she? Of course not. And Baxter wants to share his life with this woman who, in this book at least, seems incapable of keeping such a simple promise? Well, it would seem to cast an aspersion on the wedding vows, for one thing... 2/5 S. Schwartz "romonko" (alberta canada) - See all my reviews, May 24, 1999

A neat addition to this cozy historical series

In 1910 England, there is plenty of excitement in the air as the Pennyfoot Hotel hosts the annual Spring Ball. This year, the ball's visiting celebrity and entertainer is the Great Denmarric who is going to perform his renowned magic show. The Great Denmarric's performance is top rate, but when he performs "a death defying feat" and opens the magic box that is supposed to contain his stage assistant, Desiree, the woman is gone. Denmarric is stunned that his performance failed to go smoothly like it always does. Not too long after that debacle, Desiree, who is actually former waitress Ivy Glumm, is found murdered. Cecily Sinclair, the manager of the hotel, begins to investigate before the murderer kills again and does irreversible damage to the reputation of her establishment. Though DYING ROOM ONLY is the eleventh Pennyfoot Hotel mystery, the story remains a refreshing historical who-done-it. Kate Kingsbury, who demonstrates she is one of the sub-genre's... 5/5 0, August 20, 1998

The safe was chosen for my son's dorm room at college. It was to hold his laptop (17" screen) and other electronic items. It was returned the next day.The Good: The safe lock mechanism seemed to work well. We inserted the batteries and the display on the door came to life. A code was entered on the keypad and the door locked smoothly. The Bad: Based on the interior dimensions of the safe the laptop should have fit easily, however, the box for the mechanism on the back of the door gets in the way when trying to insert a large object since the door does not swing past 90 degrees. The laptop had to be inserted at an odd angle and twisted to get it in. I can foresee damage to the laptop after a number of these insertions and extractions. The Ugly: The battery compartment on the back of the door was loose. The inner door cover was hanging loose and had a screw missing which was found inside the safe.
