“Reading Sad Can Be Inspiring As Well”

4/5 Dks - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: The Last Hotel Room (Kindle Edition) I picked this up as a Kindle Scout pick. The tag line here is that Tom has come to Tangier to end it all after a sequence of fairly common first world misfortune. You know the deal; broken marriage, job and dreams. What follows is a less common but credible story of post-enlightenment basic human nature which kicks in when one is faced first hand with the disaster of ‘those other parts of the world.’It was Oliver Stone in discussing ‘Snowdon’ who recently said that “We Live In a Disney World.”This is a piece of Disney worth telling by Sean McLachlan who should keep going on the human stuff, I think. We need more Disney because ‘the facts’ are underwhelming. I found this a highly readable transportation to another culture and another place which its own unique moral challenges. Four Stars. The Missing Link to Life

The setting is Tangier. The scene is both seedy and exotic, the kind of setting that many of us seem to feel a yearning for. The world he sees from the ‘hotel room’ is a world chockfull of tourists and expatriates trying to find something in that setting that they can’t seem to find where they came from. Many of the tourists and expatriates seem to have no great difficulty convincing themselves that they have found that ‘something’. But Tom is depressed. He is deeply depressed and has been so for at least most of his life. He is not so much tired of life as bored by it. Nothing, no kind of work, no relationship, no form of entertainment seems worth the effort it takes to engage in it. He neither loves other people nor dislikes them. He knows he is lonely, but there seems to be no help for it. He likes to draw pictures of things that he can see, but he can see no more (and not quite as perfectly) as a camera can. When he... 5/5 Cherokee Randolph - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A delicate subject

The writing is not great but it certainly is competent, dealng with delicate issues. We have to take much of the subtext at face value, despite the innuendos, which suggest more, but it implies the paternal far more than the sexual. The descriptions of Tangier are also good. We really do sit in the plaza or roam the twisting lanes, with the sun on the straights in the distance. I was curious, furthermore, to read of the fate of Syrian refugees, the things that happen where my own book on Syria ("Travels in Syria, a Love Story") leaves off. These are the flotsom of a disasterous chapter in Syria's long history, and have nothing to do with art or architecture or even religion and tradition. So that makes this not a travel book but a people book and it reveals a great deal, as well, about the rude awakening from the American dream, the tragic flaws in the whole texture of life in Middle U.S.A. It went wrong because the young coming-uppers cared more about salary than... 4/5 Carol Miller (Mexico, D.F. Mexico) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
