Midnight s Solar Eclipse: APOD June 3rd 2011

  • Jun 03, 2011 from michde(Mich De L'Orme) in Science
michde On June 1, the shadow of the New Moon was cast across a land of the midnight Sun in this year's second partial solar eclipse. This picture of the geocentric celestial event above the Arctic Circle was taken near midnight from northern Finland's Kaunispää Hill in Lapland. Of course the region's reindeer were able to watch as both Moon and Sun hugged the northern horizon just above a cloud bank. Also visible from parts of Alaska and Canada, the eclipse began at sunrise in Siberia and northern China at 19:25 UT, ending about 3.5 hours later north of Newfoundland in the Atlantic Ocean. Remarkably, just one lunation later, on July 1 the New Moon's shadow will again reach out and touch the Earth in a partial solar eclipse, limited in visibility to a relatively small area in the Antarctic Ocean. July's eclipse will be followed by the fourth and final partial solar eclipse of 2011 on November 25. That eclipse will be seen from a southern land of the midnight Sun.

Moon and Venus at Dawn: APOD July 2nd 2011

  • Jul 02, 2011 from michde(Mich De L'Orme) in Science
michde Brilliant Venus and a thin crescent Moon stood together above the eastern horizon just before sunrise on June 30. The lovely celestial pairing is captured in this colorful twilight skyview overlooking a reservoir near Izmir, Turkey. For some, the close conjunction could be viewed as a daylight occultation. While Venus is nearing the end of its latest performance as planet Earth's morning star, the old lunar cresent, about 24 hours from its New Moon phase, was also bidding farewell for now to the dawn. In fact, for the next two nights a young Moon can be spotted just after sunset. Look for a thin sunlit sliver close to the western horizon, not far from bright planet Mercury.

Podcaster Leo Laporte, the everywhere man

  • Aug 25, 2010 from steven3x(Steven Lauren) in World news
steven3x Leo Laporte arrived Thursday at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank.
On Friday morning he arrived at the office of KFI AM 640, the radio station that airs his syndicated "The Tech Guy" program. At 3:42 p.m., he was back at the airport, ready to fly home to Petaluma, Calif.
I don't stalk Laporte. Not in the traditional sense, anyway. Every time the tech-savvy broadcaster checks into a nearby place using a service called Foursquare, an alert pops up on my phone.
Location-centric social networking is one of the hottest Internet technologies today. Last week Facebook announced four partnerships and a feature of its own, called Places, for telling friends you're hanging out at a particular restaurant, bar or other notable spot.
Laporte, a 53-year-old avid Foursquare user who runs his own online broadcasting company, travels constantly. However, he sets up shop in a suburban town about an hour north of San Francisco. Location, for most of what he does, is irrelevant.
"Thank goodness there's Skype and the Internet," Laporte said recently in an interview with The Times. "We don't have to be anywhere."
    Sometimes he does.

In January, Laporte was in Las Vegas, shooting live video from the Consumer Electronics Show. In March, he was in Austin, Texas, crowd-surfing at a South by Southwest party, with live-streaming video equipment on his back and a camera in his hand. Then in June, he covered L.A.'s E3 video game expo.
That he still uses Foursquare to let friends and fans know about his travels is worth noting.
Known in some circles as "President of the Internet," Laporte wields major influence in the consumer-technology industry. From the phones he uses -- now, Verizon Wireless' Droid X, though that could change tomorrow -- to the websites he supports -- he was a big proponent of Twitter early on -- Laporte's habits are worth watching.
Indeed, hundreds of thousands of people do tune in to watch his podcasts and listen to his radio show. When he's not traveling, Laporte runs a network of online talk shows called TWiT out of his two-story office. Somehow he's not the Foursquare mayor there.
The company is named after its flagship podcast, This Week in Tech. On it, reporters and pundits in the technology industry discuss the week's news, and episodes net hundreds of thousands of downloads.(Disclosure: I've appeared several times as a guest panelist on the show.)
Another two dozen programs cover topics such as food, law and science, but most deal with more specialized areas in technology, including recently launched showsabout green tech and Apple's iPad.
The TWiT company has been expanding steadily in staff -- now at about 10 employees and 30 to 40 contractors."We've outgrown our studio," Laporte said.
The control room contains two desks, mixing boards, a multi-camera setup, monitors, chairs in the corner for occasional guests and a giant rubber ball Laporte sits (and bounces) on while shooting hours of live Internet video daily. He aims to have 24 hours of original programming on the Web. Video is constantly streaming at Live.TWiT.tv, but most of that content is repeats from its still-growing stable of shows.
Despite some complaints from city-dwelling employees not enamored with the commute to Petaluma, the next step for the 5-year-old company is to build an even bigger studio in Laporte's favorite small town, he said.
A radio broadcaster of 34 years with a six-year stint on TV, Laporte's booming voice, love of Hawaiian shirts and ability to distill complex topics into easily digestible bites has won over fans.
As a businessman, he can talk a big game, but it's obvious he's making some of it up as he goes along. After all, that's often the best way to succeed in the tech industry.
"If you want to understand my business, you just have to come from the point of view of: What did Leo want to do?" he said, half-jokingly. "I wanted to be my own boss. I didn't want to commute. I wanted to choose the shows. I wanted to cover shows that I was interested in. And if you understand that, then everything makes sense."
Laporte's psyche isn't the only beneficiary. It's proven a sensible business. TWiT's revenue was $2.25 million last year and is on track to gross $3 million this year, Laporte said.
The chief TWiT, as he calls himself, doesn't take his salary from the interstitial, old-time ads he reads between discussions, which account for the majority of revenue. He's paid by donations from fans, which can exceed $20,000 some months. (He limits his own monthly payments to $10,000, or $120,000 annually -- plenty for him and his family to get by in Petaluma. The rest goes into the company budget.)
A testament to how sustainable Laporte's business is, Jason Calacanis, who helped launch the blogging phenomenon with his Weblogs company that was acquired by AOL for $25 million, is getting into the online broadcasting game. Even the name of Calacanis' company, ThisWeekIn, is just four letters off from Laporte's signature show's title.

A great value and a good performer

Customer Video Review Length:: 8:56 MinsThe Epson VS220 is a budget priced LCD projector that provides a very good level of performance for its price. This is a 3-LCD projector. Just a few years ago you'd have paid at least two times as much money to get a projector with similar performance. So right off the bat, this is giving you a lot of bang for the buck. It's compact, light in weight and has an ease of connectivity that makes it easy to use. With Inputs galore, you're able to hook up 4 video sources at the same time and easily switch between them with the provided remote or directly from the projector using the control panel on the top of the projector.Inputs:HDMIUSB-type AUSB-type BS-VideoVGADuring my review I had two laptops (one PC, one Mac) hooked up using the VGA and USB port and I also had a GoPro Hero3 Black connected and shooting live video. All three sources were easily projected by the Epson... 5/5 M. Erb - See all my reviews, May 9, 2013

An easy to use value projector

First off: This is an entry level projector. It has similar specs at about 1/3 the price of a "top of the line" projector I bought from Dell over 5 years ago. Things have come a long way in 5 years as have price reductions! Entry level with entry level price.I didn't ever need to touch the installation manual. My first test of the device was hooking it to my 1080i Tivo via HDMI. Of course this projector can't reproduce 1080 directly but it did handle the widescreen signal appropriately and with good color reproduction and without distortion. It gave no fights with receiving a higher resolution than it could produce and down scaling it without any artifacts or distortion. My second test was by plugging it in to my PC to replace a monitor. It performed better at this task and I could see it realistically being used in an office environment.Operation was pretty simple, and a positive point is that zoom and keystone have dedicated buttons, so... 3/5 THATCH "RST" (OHIO) - See all my reviews, March 29, 2013

    What he said

Dang! This projector is so thoroughly and competently reviewed that I don't know what helpful information I can possibly add. I see no point in adding all the manufacturer specs again. It is almost identical to the VS310 model I have except for the HDMI connection. My eye isn't discerning enough to tell the difference between 2700 and 2600 lumens. I'm a total electronics klutz so if I had no trouble connecting the projector anyone can do it. Plug it in, turn it on. The color is fantastic, even in a well-lit room. You can connect up to four devices at once and switch between them with the remote. Amazon has several carrying cases just for the projector alone or with your laptop.I don't understand the reasoning behind including only a VGA cord and no type B USB cord (the one with one square end connection), which really isn't very expensive. Fortunately I had one on hand. I have two all-in-one desktop computers which don't have VGA ports. They're only on my... 5/5 xkydivr (GA) - See all my reviews, March 26, 2013

    DISCO, COUNTRY AND BEAUTIFUL BALLADS

This excellent compilation contains four massive disco smashes, one stunning piece of power pop, three soulful ballads and one great country story song. The heavy presence of disco is to be expected since this dance style still rules the charts in 1979. I Will Survive and Y.M.C.A. became ageless club anthems, Ring My Bell is famous for its atmospheric syndrum effects and Heart Of Glass crossed the boundaries between new wave and disco in a big way. Escape (The Pina Colada Song) was a novelty hit and it still irritates me, but Just When I Needed You Most, Sad Eyes and Fire are great emotional ballads that have stood the test of time very well. The Devil Went Down To Georgia is still an amusing country song with some superb instrumental breaks. Nine great songs out of ten tracks make this one of the better Billboard compilations, reflecting all of the relevant styles that made 1979 such a great year for music. 5/5 Pieter Uys "Toypom" (Johannesburg) - See all my reviews, September 6, 2003

    Those Were The Days!!

Ah, 1979. It was the last year that disco ruled the pop charts, new wave began its rise, rap had its first Top 40 hit ("Rapper's Delight"), and every newscast began with a countdown of the number of days hostages had been held in Iran. As a 9 year old, I heard these songs everywhere, from "My Sharona" played round the clock on the radio, to "Sad Eyes" and "Just When I Needed You Most" played during slow skate at the local roller rink. I saw most of these songs lip synced to on "Solid Gold" (remember that show?), where Dionne Warwick's hair got shorter every week. I thought Charlie Daniels was one bad dude when he was talking about the Devil coming down south, where I lived at the time! Who knew then that "Y.M.C.A." would become the most played song in the history of the universe? And though I've listened to it for 25 years without tiring of it, I still don't have the foggiest clue what Debbie Harry is singing on "Heart of Glass?!" Needless to say, this CD sums up one year better... 5/5 D. Hawkins (Denver, CO United States) - See all my reviews, February 2, 2004
