About this book
The First World War is over. Eric Vernon is on the cusp of adulthood. Tall, bony and awkward he finds himself torn between a desire to emulate his heroic father, who led a life of quiet sacrifice, and resentment toward his father's roguish friend Edward Blake, who survived the war only to throw himself into gay life in Berlin. I love my weeping Angel. It is very pretty and a nice addition to my family memorial garden I created in my back yard. Found some really neat memorial rocks that you can personally engrave from Gifts For You and was able to create the perfect memorial garden. The only thing I wasn't expecting to buy is batteries since the Angel is suppose to be solar. Other than that I would recommend this product to others who want a nice piece in their memorial gardens. 5/5 Delighted - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Fantastically Detailed Memorial Stone, Glad to Have It In My Garden

I purchased this item to place outside in a garden that my wife and I have dedicated to our first born son, who passed away at around 4 months old.** BUILD QUALITY **-------------------This stone is made of the same cement resin that many decoration of this style are made of. Because of that, it is relatively heavy for an object of it's size but it also feels very sturdy and very well made. The rock detailing on the surface of the stone is very high quality and you might think you were looking at a polished/smoothed stone if you didn't know any better. The butterfly itself also has detailing in the wings. The butterfly is made of very thin pieces of metal that are about half as thick as a penny. The butterfly does feel a little flimsy, but so long as you are not tugging on it or constantly messing with it, it seems like it will stay in place very well.** OTHER DETAILS **-------------------The bottom of the stone is not detailed like the... 5/5 Roberto A. The item arrived in good time and looks really nice. The only problem is that the metal butterfly is not stainless steel and is therefore beginning to rust, which is therefore starting to stain the stone around it. For an outdoor stone, the butterfly should have been made out of weather-proof material. 4/5 C K - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Memorable and Terrifying - Flynn Scores Again

Vince Flynn's books are essentially primers on what is needed to combat and defeat terrorisim and the "bad guys." It will not be everyone's cup of tea, because it is painfully honest in it's assessment of where our problems lie and unfortunately they often lie with some of us. If you genuflect to the altar of political correctness, this will be a tough read. Mitch Rapp returns. Flynn introduces him bluntly to those who have not read his prior novels as he prepares to interrogate five al Qaeda operatives who have been captured in a raid on a secret stronghold: "Calling Rapp a counterterrorism operative was essentially a polite way of ducking the truth. When everything was stripped away, the reality was that that he was an assassin. He has killed, and killed often, for his country, and in his mind 9/11 was proof that he hadn't killed enough."His interrogation produces the picture of a terrorist attack on the United States that involves a nuclear weapon. The... 5/5 John R. Linnell (New Gloucester, ME United States) - See all my reviews, May 18, 2004

    Very impressed with Vince Flynn.

Although I had heard of Vince Flynn's series of novels featuring Mitch Rapp, MEMORIAL DAY is the first one I decided to take for a test run. What I found what an action-packed thriller set at a blistering pace and a main character that may not stay inside the box that the government would like for him to, but you like him anyway. You have to...he does things the way you'd like to see them done and he gets results.MEMORIAL DAY is also a prime example of the way that the CIA/Spy/International Thriller genre is headed in a post-9/11 world. In the 80s, the villians tended to be Russian. Now, the targets have become Al-Qaeda and those countries that harbor and support them. Not to worry...there are still plenty of Russian villians running loose in popular fiction. MEMORIAL DAY's premise begins with Mitch Rapp foiling an attempt to smuggle a nuclear weapon onto American soil, and right around one of the biggest tourist holidays on the calendar. This plot element alone makes the... 5/5 Brad Cooper "Author of Guilty by Association" (Beckley, WV) - See all my reviews, October 31, 2004

    strong action thriller

Intel learns that countries harboring terrorists are transferring their stock and bonds into gold while at a top-secret installation a Pakistani terrorist is being interrogated by CIA black ops agent Mitch Rapp. Intel finds out that Al Qaeda is preparing to strike at the United States, making the World Trade Towers destruction seem like a child destroying a toy. Mitch and a group of commandos raid a small Pakistani mountain town where they find proof that Al Qaeda is getting ready to attack America.Going through the documents and the computer disks, Mitch and other operatives believe that the terrorist group is trying to smuggle a nuclear bomb into the United States. Through diligent effort and good investigative work, they are able to locate the bomb which was being shipped into the country by boat. Further Intel lead Mitch to believe that a second bomb has already been smuggled into the country and it is set to go off at the White House festivities on Memorial Day if Mitch... 5/5 Harriet Klausner - See all my reviews, May 5, 2004

    Purchased Two

I have two elderly lady friends who recently became widows. I purchased one of these for each of them. They were so choked up when they saw them and knew exactly where they would put this beautiful tribute in their gardens. Every evening, they go and sit by this little memorial - it means something different to each of them, but brings so much comfort for their hearts. The soft glow of the solar light is very warm and not harsh. Just perfect for quiet moments. I highly recommend this as a special tribute gift when you just don't know what to say or do. 5/5 Karen A., Moorhead (San Jacinto, CA USA) - See all my reviews, March 22, 2013

Experience the Iliad again for the first time

I have read many transltions of the Iliad and taught selections from it at the university level, but this is something different. With the narrative stripped away and the deaths and similes foregrounded, the poem is much shorter and even starker than the original. Oswald explains the differences in how she treats the two aspects of her version, and there's a concluding essay by Eavan Boland that highlights the technique Oswald uses of repeating the simile sections. I will read this intense and moving version many more times than once. 5/5 Judith Moore - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Brilliant idea done brilliantly

Alice Oswald has written a fabulous "version" of the Iliad as interesting as Christopher Logue's reworkings. This long poem is a series of death scenes, some just one line long, followed by an apt simile, so that every human war death is illustrated by some natural occurence, often involving predatory birds or the ocean. Oswald's frame, an opening listing of names emulating war memorials and a closing series of twelve similes, is inspired. My review at poetsandwar.com goes into more detail, but anyone who enjoys Homer should find this distillation a remarkably moving work. Brilliant imagery. 5/5 Stephen Sossaman (Napa CA USA) - See all my reviews, March 31, 2013

    Not bad at all.

The most interesting part about Memorial is whether it is actually needed at all. Granted that I'm from the author writes for him/herself camp, so there's not any real question in my mind at all. Is it a conceit, then, to think of Memorial for the war dead? After all, the Iliad is thought of in that manner as it is (Glory and remembrance are some of what the Greeks and Trojans fought for at the time). It's all quite interesting thinking about the philosophical points about Memorial. Now on to the poetry itself. My only quibble is repetition of segments of poetry (I suppose to invoke the feel of the often used phrases in the Iliad itself). These are often pretty large chunks of poetry, not just single lines or phrases. Their continued use was a bit on the off-putting side. Other than that, Memorial was very enjoyable. 4/5 rjones2818 "Rex A. lovely

I purchased this for my mothers grave. I love driving by the cemetary on my way home from work and see it's light in the darkness. 5/5 Diana L. Magda - See all my reviews, April 6, 2011
