Five Days at Memorial, Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital

Creator: Sheri Fink | Medical - 2016-01-26

A Pulitzer Prize-winning doctor, reporter and author of War Hospital reconstructs five days at Memorial Medical Center after Hurricane Katrina destroyed its generators to reveal how caregivers were forced to make life-and-death decisions ...

Months later, several health professionals faced criminal allegations that they deliberately injected numerous patients with drugs to hasten their deaths. Five Days at Memorial, the culmination of six years of reporting, unspools the mystery of what happened in those days, bringing the reader into a hospital fighting for its life and into a conversation about the most terrifying form of health care rationing. In a voice at once involving and fair, masterful and intimate, Fink exposes the hidden dilemmas of end-of-life care and reveals just how ill-prepared we are in America for the impact of large-scale disasters—and how we can do better. A remarkable book, engrossing from start to finish, Five Days at Memorial radically transforms your understanding of human nature in crisis. From the Hardcover edition.

From a Ruined Garden, The Memorial Books of Polish Jewry

Creator: Jack Kugelmass, Jonathan Boyarin, Zachary M. Baker, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum | Biography & Autobiography - 1998

FROM A RUINED GARDEN gathers some 77 sections from the nearly 1,000 memorial books published. The texts describe daily life in the shtetl as well as everyday life during the Holocaust and the experiences of returning survivors. 26 photos.

Publisher: Indiana University Press

About this book
"An indispensable sourcebook... Emphasis falls on the variegated, often joyful, culture of the Polish Jews, on what existed before the garden was ruined." --Geoffrey Hartmann, The New Republic "From these marvelous selections, one can see an entire culture unfolding." --Curt Leviant, New York Times Book Review "This newly revised version of the classic study... is a pleasure for the eye and the soul! One of the seminal studies of the impact of the Shoah on European Jewry, it is even more moving in its new incarnation than in its original version. More than a collection of studies of books of remembrance and mourning, this volume asks how one can mourn for a world lost and still live in the present and the future." --Sander L. Gilman "Kugelmass and Boyarin have done a splendid job of combing the vast memorial book literature to select the most revealing accounts of Jewish life in interbellum Poland. Ordinary people speak in this volume with an immediacy and poignancy that cannot help but touch the reader. In the time since it first appeared, From a Ruined Garden has become a classic. Its reappearance in an updated and expanded form is most welcome." --Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett "In this magnificent collection, the editors combine a profound 'feel' for the vanished world of Polish Jewry, the anthologist's skill at selecting the telling example, and the anthropologist's sophisticated understanding of how these testimonies should be read. A marvelous introduction to this rich literature." --Peter Novick Polish Jewish survivors of the Holocaust compiled memorial books to preserve the memory of their destroyed communities. They describe daily life in the shtetl as well as everyday life during the Holocaust and the experiences of returning survivors. These memories paint a haunting picture of a way of life lost forever.

This review is from: Solar Lighted Weeping Angel Garden Memorial, Beige, Metal (Kitchen) Buyer beware the angel only lit for 2 days and that was that DEAD.I put a different battery in it to no avail. HOWEVER! I will say that Collections Etc is a Amazonian company I would definitely buy from again. I emailed them about the problem and they responded the next day. I received a replacement item in 3 days. Now that is service and the replacement is still going strong. Collections Etc gets a five star rating in my book and I would purchase from them again if for no other reason they stand behind the products they sell ( WOW is that a novel concept in this day and age or what!) 5/5 Delighted - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Solar Lighted Weeping Angel Garden Memorial, Beige, Metal (Kitchen) I love my weeping Angel. It is very pretty and a nice addition to my family memorial garden I created in my back yard. Found some really neat memorial rocks that you can personally engrave from Gifts For You and was able to create the perfect memorial garden. The only thing I wasn't expecting to buy is batteries since the Angel is suppose to be solar. Other than that I would recommend this product to others who want a nice piece in their memorial gardens. a superb thought provoking look at the potential for disaster in all our hospitals.

I had not followed Dr Pou's case when it was occurring, but I was aware that there was a female MD being investigated for practicing euthanasia during Katrina. When this was published, I wanted to learn the story. I have read two other books about medical care during Katrina- the first was CodeBlue, the second a collection of nurse's stories about working during the storm and its aftermath. Both were interesting, but not challenging in the way Five Days at Memorial has been. First, let me say that Ms Fink writes very well. Her excellent prose made the story very clear. I was horrified to learn just how dreadful the conditions became at Memorial hospital. This despite reading the two previous books. Reading this, I could smell the fetid odors, feel the heat and humidity and actually imagine myself in the nurse's shoes. I could clearly understand the terrible dilemma the staff faced as DAYS passed in 100 degree heat with no electricity and the chaos of no plan for rescue of... 5/5 B. read at your own risk

there are going to be two types of people that read this book. the medically educated and the non medically educated. i am medically educated, and my perceptions and views on this situation will be very different and controversial compared to others. the medical personnel described in the book will always be judged by what did or did not happen. and many people whe were not there will always believe what they want to believe.i very much believe that in america, people are allowed to "live" much longer than is necessary. the simple existence of a heartbeat does not make someone living. a life confined to a bed and totally depenedent on others or machines to live is not a life nor is it living. i firmly believe that just because we can does not mean that we should. what dr pou did or did not do with regards to euthanasia is not a crime in my book. we should technically make people more "comfortable" more often. the reason people are kept alive for so... 4/5 Dustin Merton (Lubbock, Texas United States) - See all my reviews, November 19, 2013

I have practiced hospital pharmacy in many crises: under rocket fire in Vietnam; while mass murders were being committed in the hospital; as an electrical explosion cut off power to the hospital; taking in many injured from multiple vehicle accidents; a tornado knocking out electricity and phones and downing trees blocking all access to the hospital including the helipad; an emergency generator failing; medications that could not be delivered from the supplier due to a blizzard; and financial crises when the supplier required cash before any further medication deliveries. Today's greatest threat to hospitals if financial. With medications, sterile goods and food being delivered on a just-in-time basis, any delay in payments to hospitals will cause major disruptions in obtaining these vital items. A Beautiful Way to Remember Your Loves Ones

5/5 Intothewoods912 - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Memorial Angel Keepsake Picture Frame (Kitchen) I first received this as a gift from a friend who knew I was struggling with the passing of my grandmother. I was floored when she gave me this. It's one of the most beautiful memorial frames I have ever seen. I honestly don't know how to describe how amazing this is, and how many compliments I have received. I ended up purchasing two more to give as gifts, and the receivers cried when opening them.If you are looking for a way to remember somebody, or to help somebody remember, stop reading and purchase this product. You won't regret it. Shoddy, cheap looking

2/5 Jack Pokrovac - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Memorial Angel Keepsake Picture Frame (Kitchen) I bought 3 of these several years ago and was satisfied. This current purchase shocked me. Although this resembles the ones I purchased in the past, this one is smaller, very cheap and shoddy looking and was missing the cover for the "trinket" box. Instead of a piece of glass in the frame as in my former purchases, there is a cheap piece of cellophane type material. There were smudge marks next to the text on the frame which made the frame look dirty. I'm ashamed to give it to a friend who just lost her mother. The whole ensemble looks like a trinket. 5/5 teenie (land of the lost) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Memorial Angel Keepsake Picture Frame (Kitchen) I got this for myself when I had to put my older cat down. I wanted something to put one of her pictures in that would be special to me and this works so good. I have a battery operated candle in the candle holder and this looks so nice with her picture in the frame. I wish that I was not doing this review and still had my cat- but this is a very nice way to remember her by. In the little cup I have one of her favorite mice she played with as a kitten.
