Miami Beach

Creator: Seth Bramson | History - 2005-10-05

The images in this volume evoke poignant memories of Miami Beachs great past, almost inevitable downturn, and return to life with the discovery of South Beach and a renewed interest in art deco.

Publisher: Arcadia Pub

About this book
Miami Beach began its rise to the top of the worlds resort scene when Carl Fisher, builder of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, arrived prior to 1920. The lure of The Worlds Playground was impossible to ignore for many, as hotels and restaurants flourished, even through the Great Depression. The images in this volume evoke poignant memories of Miami Beachs great past, almost inevitable downturn, and return to life with the discovery of South Beach and a renewed interest in art deco. Among the vintage views, most of which have never before been published, are early Lincoln Road and Washington Avenue; Miami Beach High School; Parhams; Juniors; Wolfies; Pumperniks; the first hotel on Miami Beach, Browns; the Roney Plaza; the Fontainebleau; and, of course, the people who helped create this modern paradise.

Miami Beach, blueprint of an Eden : lives seen through the prism of family and place

Creator: Michele Oka Doner, Mitchell Wolfson | 2007-11-08

Draws on the stories of the Wolfson and Oka families to present a visual history of Miami Beach, drawing on historical archives to cover regional culture, architecture, politics, and more. 10,000 first printing.

Publisher: Collins Design

About this book
Miami Beach is the story of an extraordinary time and place, told through the prism of two founding families, the Wolfsons and the Okas. The authors' fathers were each mayors of Miami Beach, one in the 1940s and the other in the '50s and early '60s, and their mothers were prominent first ladies, who regularly welcomed the crème de la crème of society to their enchanting city. The Wolfsons' and Okas' exhaustive family archives provide a rich cultural, architectural, political, social, botanical, stylistic, gastronomic, geological, and poetic history of the contemporary phenomenon that is Miami Beach. At once an intimate memoir, a sprawling history, and a work of great artistic integrity, Miami Beach invites you to step back into a world so visual, mythical, and filled with family lore that its local intensity illuminates a national character.

Nothing that we haven't seen before

Though beautifully presented, I'm afraid that the content of this book reveals nothing we haven't seen before. In fact, most of the images are downright cliché with scads of pictures of the same art deco buildings and lifeguard stations that have appeared in countless other publications. The only thing missing to dismiss this as nothing more than a very big and expensive brochure, were the scantily clad girls with parrots perched on their shoulders, smiling women carrying designer shopping bags and throngs of people bathed in the hue of strobe lights on a crowded dance floor. Some attempts are made at getting to the fabric of the community but it's more like a cursory glance than a genuine look. Ultimately, it yields nothing of any true value. I realize that one can only do so much but it just comes across as a half-hearted effort. Furthermore, there are several factual errors, the hallmark of shoddy editing. Most glaring is the University of Miami identified as Miami... 2/5 wolfgang731 - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Book Review

0 5/5 HMoore - See all my reviews This review is from: Miami And The Beaches (Hardcover) I was amazed when I received this book. I cannot stop paging through it. The pictures are incredible! The book spans from South Miami and features awesome places to visit like Coral Castle and Schnebly Redlands Winery, all the way to North Miami's Spanish Monastery and so many places in between that are worth a visit.Miami is such a special place and this book brings back all those special memories. I have a few of Hoberman's photo books and this is already one of my favorites. These books always showcase a unique view of a city. Thank you Gerald Hoberman well done again. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 7, 2011

A strong visual documentation of a lost era of architecture.

0 5/5 Stacey May Brady (Destin, FL United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Miami Beach Deco (Hardcover) This book presents a strong visual documentation and unsentimental ode to a lost era of deco architecture. Historically relevant, this compilation is a classic architectural photography book. Ever shrewed in his choices, Brooke had the access and acumen to capture the detail and bravado of the deco style in all of its glory. I love the book and the images are terrifically cool and crisp. The photographer has a point of view but ultimately he photographs what is there, capturing a moment in time (or perhaps a moment lost in time?). I bought three copies as gifts for friends and they love the book as well. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 21, 2011

    Good Value

0 3/5 Peter Biers - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Miami Beach Deco (Hardcover) This is a small sized book - 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 which I wasn't anticipating. It contains good photos of buildings and close-up details of some buildings but not much else. The photos are not individually captioned, you have to refer to the Index at the back which provides the name and date built but no other details. I'd been looking for a book with a ton of photos and history of the buildings which doesn't seem to exist so this is adequate, particularly for the price. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 29, 2013

    A disappointment

This might have been a nice "coffee table" book.As it is, it measures only about 7" wide by 5" tall. The technical quality of the photos is good, but in a lot of the individual building "portraits" there are random cars parked in front of the building, which hide some of the details and distracts from the overall effect. Only the barest minimum of information about what's in the picture is given, and that's in a short list at the back of the book. The main part of the book is just photo after photo, with no information on the name of the building, the architect, when it was built, how it was restored, when the photo was taken, who inhabits it now. No comments on style details (mediterranean, "ocean liner", color scheme, etc). There are some nice fold-out pages showing a wider view, but again, it would have been better appreciated in a larger format.I bought this as a souvenir from the Wolfsonian Museum there. I highly recommend that museum. I don't recommend... 1/5 Monrovia "zenmom" (Salem, MA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Miami Beach Deco (Hardcover) This might have been a nice "coffee table" book.As it is, it measures only about 7" wide by 5" tall. Beautiful Memories, beautiful book

0 5/5 Marsha Collier "dealingdiva" (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Miami Beach: Blueprint of an Eden: Lives Seen Through the Prism of Family and Place (Hardcover) I grew up in Miami Beach a bit later than the authors. When the book arrived I couldn't put it down. I loved the photos and historic reference; they showed just how special Miami Beach was. My only wish is that the authors would have expanded their history a bit.Perhaps add info on Central Beach Elementary, Ida M Fisher Junior and Miami Beach High as well as some of the other early landmarks (the Post Office on Washington Avenue). I realize the authors wrote through their own families' experience, but there is so much more... and so many others who contributed so much to the city.Hopefully one day they'll do another book to immortalize a truly "Magic City." 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 30, 2006
