Miami Beach

Creator: Seth Bramson | History - 2005-10-05

The images in this volume evoke poignant memories of Miami Beachs great past, almost inevitable downturn, and return to life with the discovery of South Beach and a renewed interest in art deco.

Publisher: Arcadia Pub

About this book
Miami Beach began its rise to the top of the worlds resort scene when Carl Fisher, builder of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, arrived prior to 1920. The lure of The Worlds Playground was impossible to ignore for many, as hotels and restaurants flourished, even through the Great Depression. The images in this volume evoke poignant memories of Miami Beachs great past, almost inevitable downturn, and return to life with the discovery of South Beach and a renewed interest in art deco. Among the vintage views, most of which have never before been published, are early Lincoln Road and Washington Avenue; Miami Beach High School; Parhams; Juniors; Wolfies; Pumperniks; the first hotel on Miami Beach, Browns; the Roney Plaza; the Fontainebleau; and, of course, the people who helped create this modern paradise.

Miami Beach, blueprint of an Eden : lives seen through the prism of family and place

Creator: Michele Oka Doner, Mitchell Wolfson | 2007-11-08

Draws on the stories of the Wolfson and Oka families to present a visual history of Miami Beach, drawing on historical archives to cover regional culture, architecture, politics, and more. 10,000 first printing.

Publisher: Collins Design

About this book
Miami Beach is the story of an extraordinary time and place, told through the prism of two founding families, the Wolfsons and the Okas. The authors' fathers were each mayors of Miami Beach, one in the 1940s and the other in the '50s and early '60s, and their mothers were prominent first ladies, who regularly welcomed the crème de la crème of society to their enchanting city. The Wolfsons' and Okas' exhaustive family archives provide a rich cultural, architectural, political, social, botanical, stylistic, gastronomic, geological, and poetic history of the contemporary phenomenon that is Miami Beach. At once an intimate memoir, a sprawling history, and a work of great artistic integrity, Miami Beach invites you to step back into a world so visual, mythical, and filled with family lore that its local intensity illuminates a national character.

    EXCELLENT BOOK on Miami Beach

Many books have been written about Miami Beach (and more lately, South Beach). But none has the wit and verve exhibited in this book by David Leddick, who makes his primary home on South Beach, so he knows what he's talking about. But even forgetting the crisp writing, get this book for so many previously unseen photographs. I pored over it for hours.Five Stars! 5/5 Andrew Delaplaine (Miami Beach) - See all my reviews, July 5, 2010

Not so great for off-the-beaten path travel

We like to explore off-the-beaten path places when we travel. I have used other Lonely Planet guides that I enjoyed (Costa Rica), but this one I felt was kinda thin on coverage of places we enjoy, and kinda Miami heavy. I got the Kindle version... Might be good if you're more into shopping, bar-hopping, but wasn't great for us. 2/5 Riverspirit "Anne" (Elk River, Alabama) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Did not like this watch at all! It felt and looked so cheap and for the price that was unexceptable. Also had black mark on the chain that would not come off. Plastic Band Watch

I bought this during the deals in November. The overall watch is nice however the band is plastic. In my opinion cheap plastic. I had to take out a couple of links to get the perfect fit and while removing pin plastic broke. Thankfully it was a link I was removing. If you pay anymore than $ 65.00 you will not be happy. I am just waiting to see how long before the band breaks and I have to purchase a new band. 3/5 Patrick Barnett - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) A strong visual documentation of a lost era of architecture.

This book presents a strong visual documentation and unsentimental ode to a lost era of deco architecture. Historically relevant, this compilation is a classic architectural photography book. Ever shrewed in his choices, Brooke had the access and acumen to capture the detail and bravado of the deco style in all of its glory. I love the book and the images are terrifically cool and crisp. The photographer has a point of view but ultimately he photographs what is there, capturing a moment in time (or perhaps a moment lost in time?). I bought three copies as gifts for friends and they love the book as well. 5/5 Stacey May Brady (Destin, FL United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Worst book I have ever purchased. Better for kindergarden kids learning to look at pictures. These buildings were mostly built during my life in Miami Beach. They all had owners, builders, landscapers and features; essentially none of which were reveiwed in this competitor to comic books. If I had my choice I would ask for my money back!! 1/5 phil emmer - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Serious omission of St Patrick School & Church on Miami Beach

I purchased this book on one of my annual visits to Miami Beach. I went to St Patrick School and graduated in 1956. I thought it was a glaring omission to not have at least one picture of the school or church which began in the 1930s and is still active! Monsignor William Barry was instrumental in the developement Miami Beach (Barry college was named after him). Dezi Arnaz was an alumni as well as Robert Brownlee (famous for Bob's Barricades all over southern Florida and many others that added to Miami Beach's history. How can an author make references to the hotels that had "resticted" policies (negative references) and leave out St Patrick School and Church which had so many positive influences on the developement of Miami Beach? 2/5 Matthew Spinella (Dover, DE United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Miami Beach (FL) (Images of America) (Paperback) I purchased this book on one of my annual visits to Miami Beach. It;s Okay But It's Just Not The Same Without Steve Guttenberg!

I liked the Police Academy movies and I agree with the reviewers who wrote that they though the first four Police Academy movies are the best. This movie was okay and had some amusing scenes but suffered from the loss of Steve Guttenberg as Mahoney. 3/5 Movie Dude (Georgia) - See all my reviews This review is from: Police Academy 5 [VHS] (VHS Tape) Some say the first Police Academy was the best in the series. Some say the first two Police Academy movies were the best in the series. However, most people I know have said that Police Academy 5 was the first flop in the series and here are some reasons why. First of all, any sequel in a series of films that is direct to video is most likely not as good as it's previous sequels. Second, Carrey Mahoney (Steve Guttenburg) is very much missed in this movie. Third, G.W. Bailey does not do as good of a job playing Captain Harris in this film as he did in Police Academy 1 & 4. Fourth, I realize that the plots in the Police Academy moives are not supposed to be taken seriously. However, the plot for Police Academy 5 was just not interesting in the least. Sure, it was a good idea to have Police Academy 5 take place in Miami Beach but everything else pretty much fails for the movie. Skip this one if you haven't already seen it and watch Police Academy 6. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 14, 2005
