Miami Beach

Creator: Seth Bramson | History - 2005-10-05

The images in this volume evoke poignant memories of Miami Beachs great past, almost inevitable downturn, and return to life with the discovery of South Beach and a renewed interest in art deco.

Publisher: Arcadia Pub

About this book
Miami Beach began its rise to the top of the worlds resort scene when Carl Fisher, builder of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, arrived prior to 1920. The lure of The Worlds Playground was impossible to ignore for many, as hotels and restaurants flourished, even through the Great Depression. The images in this volume evoke poignant memories of Miami Beachs great past, almost inevitable downturn, and return to life with the discovery of South Beach and a renewed interest in art deco. Among the vintage views, most of which have never before been published, are early Lincoln Road and Washington Avenue; Miami Beach High School; Parhams; Juniors; Wolfies; Pumperniks; the first hotel on Miami Beach, Browns; the Roney Plaza; the Fontainebleau; and, of course, the people who helped create this modern paradise.

Miami Beach, blueprint of an Eden : lives seen through the prism of family and place

Creator: Michele Oka Doner, Mitchell Wolfson | 2007-11-08

Draws on the stories of the Wolfson and Oka families to present a visual history of Miami Beach, drawing on historical archives to cover regional culture, architecture, politics, and more. 10,000 first printing.

Publisher: Collins Design

About this book
Miami Beach is the story of an extraordinary time and place, told through the prism of two founding families, the Wolfsons and the Okas. The authors' fathers were each mayors of Miami Beach, one in the 1940s and the other in the '50s and early '60s, and their mothers were prominent first ladies, who regularly welcomed the crème de la crème of society to their enchanting city. The Wolfsons' and Okas' exhaustive family archives provide a rich cultural, architectural, political, social, botanical, stylistic, gastronomic, geological, and poetic history of the contemporary phenomenon that is Miami Beach. At once an intimate memoir, a sprawling history, and a work of great artistic integrity, Miami Beach invites you to step back into a world so visual, mythical, and filled with family lore that its local intensity illuminates a national character.

A strong visual documentation of a lost era of architecture.

0 5/5 Stacey May Brady (Destin, FL United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Miami Beach Deco (Hardcover) This book presents a strong visual documentation and unsentimental ode to a lost era of deco architecture. Historically relevant, this compilation is a classic architectural photography book. Ever shrewed in his choices, Brooke had the access and acumen to capture the detail and bravado of the deco style in all of its glory. I love the book and the images are terrifically cool and crisp. The photographer has a point of view but ultimately he photographs what is there, capturing a moment in time (or perhaps a moment lost in time?). I bought three copies as gifts for friends and they love the book as well. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 21, 2011

    Good Value

0 3/5 Peter Biers - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Miami Beach Deco (Hardcover) This is a small sized book - 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 which I wasn't anticipating. It contains good photos of buildings and close-up details of some buildings but not much else. The photos are not individually captioned, you have to refer to the Index at the back which provides the name and date built but no other details. I'd been looking for a book with a ton of photos and history of the buildings which doesn't seem to exist so this is adequate, particularly for the price. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 29, 2013

    A disappointment

This might have been a nice "coffee table" book.As it is, it measures only about 7" wide by 5" tall. The technical quality of the photos is good, but in a lot of the individual building "portraits" there are random cars parked in front of the building, which hide some of the details and distracts from the overall effect. Only the barest minimum of information about what's in the picture is given, and that's in a short list at the back of the book. The main part of the book is just photo after photo, with no information on the name of the building, the architect, when it was built, how it was restored, when the photo was taken, who inhabits it now. No comments on style details (mediterranean, "ocean liner", color scheme, etc). There are some nice fold-out pages showing a wider view, but again, it would have been better appreciated in a larger format.I bought this as a souvenir from the Wolfsonian Museum there. I highly recommend that museum. I don't recommend... 1/5 Monrovia "zenmom" (Salem, MA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Miami Beach Deco (Hardcover) This might have been a nice "coffee table" book.As it is, it measures only about 7" wide by 5" tall. Serious omission of St Patrick School & Church on Miami Beach

0 2/5 Amazon Customer (Dover, DE United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Miami Beach (FL) (Images of America) (Paperback) I purchased this book on one of my annual visits to Miami Beach. I went to St Patrick School and graduated in 1956. I thought it was a glaring omission to not have at least one picture of the school or church which began in the 1930s and is still active! Monsignor William Barry was instrumental in the developement Miami Beach (Barry college was named after him). Dezi Arnaz was an alumni as well as Robert Brownlee (famous for Bob's Barricades all over southern Florida and many others that added to Miami Beach's history. How can an author make references to the hotels that had "resticted" policies (negative references) and leave out St Patrick School and Church which had so many positive influences on the developement of Miami Beach? 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 12, 2011

    The real Miami Vice

An enthralling behind the scenes look at the inner workings of the politics of Miami Beach and the birth of South Beach. As the new kid on the block, Daoud shows readers that he is an unwitting lamb going to slaughter as he embarks on his path in politics. This book is an exciting, rollicking, suspenseful page-turner--I absolutely could not put it down! This book has something for everyone: a nieve protagonist, sex, bribery, action-packed chase scenes, criminals, Miami Vice appearances, cleandestine meetings, Mariel refugees, police in hot pursuit, love interests, flashy South Beach developers, and Dauod's trial. Daoud's story is sure to be a movie --he's led a multifaceted life loaded with intrigue and twists and turns.Daoud's story begins with his entre into local Miami Beach politics as a young, nieve law school graduate whose political aspirations stem from his desire to help the downtrodden seniors who populated Miami Beach in the 70s and 80s. He succeeds by being... 5/5 Ruth A. Weiss "Chrysalis" (boca raton, FL United States) - See all my reviews, May 20, 2008

A scandalous depiction of South Beach and its players

The Sins of South Beach is a "scandalous" depiction of the rise of South Beach and the painful decline of a great man. I found the book to be a riveting tale of corruption, intrigue, and passion. As a frequent visitor to Miami over the years and a nine year resident, I have always been fascinated with how this city has gone through such a rapid and extreme transformation. Alex Daoud bravely told the story of his own young ambition that was always motivated by good intentions. With all of the good he did for the discarded elderly and dilapidated diamond in the ruff that was Miami Beach, he still fell prey to the temptations of power. The era known as the days of the "Cocaine Cowboys" was the critical time that Alex was a rising player in Miami politics and mayor of Miami Beach. His candid and unapologetic account of those days reads like a novel yet is based on real life events. I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't one day turned into a movie. I highly recommend this book to anyone who... 5/5 Jeannette S.
