Miami Beach Memories, A Nostalgic Chronicle of Days Gone by

Creator: Joann Biondi | History - 2006-10-01

Overflowing with personal memories and fascinating memorabilia, this is a book to treasure.

Publisher: Globe Pequot

About this book
Miami Beach has lots of memories to share. Memories of the 1920s, when Johnny Weissmuller flaunted his freestyle skills at local pools; of the 1930s, when Desi Arnaz strummed his first guitar; of World War II, when Clark Gable romanced more than one local girl; of the Fabulous Fifties, when the Rat Pack owned the joint; and of the 1960s, when Muhammad Ali snagged the heavyweight championship of the world in the Miami Beach Auditorium. A tiny spit of sand barely 15 miles long and a mile wide, the island is known throughout the world as a tropical haven and vacation playground—a neon-lit Garden of Eden dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure. And yet, serious things have gone on there. Dark things, like the blatant anti-Semitism of the 1930s, that have been intentionally forgotten from the collective psyche. In that sense, Miami Beach is a sandbox full of paradoxes. To unravel those paradoxes, Biondi interviewed more than one hundred current and former residents of the city: lawyers and land developers, doctors and teachers, artists and politicians, waiters and maids, photographers and strippers, comedians and singers. There’s even a Native Indian chief and a former U.S. Attorney General in the bunch. Their personal memories, along with stunning black-and-white photographs, document the island's history in a way no third-person history can. The many great images include Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Edna Buchanan in a bikini (she wanted to show off); boxer Jack Dempsey holding eight ice cream cones on the beach; the Beatles/Judy Garland/Jackie Gleason posing with hairdresser Ruth Regina (not together, of course); all the strippers in their stripping glory; and tons of evocative family portraits. The book also features social artifacts from the era, including original ID cards that African-American workers were made to carry in the 1930s, war posters, and restaurant menus.A nostalgic chronicle of days gone by, Miami Beach Memories is a chorus of varied voices and diverse points of view, a mosaic of poignant anecdotes, and an eclectic collage that paints a portrait of what life was once like on this tiny but fascinating island.

Miami Beach

Creator: Seth Bramson | History - 2005

The images in this volume evoke poignant memories of Miami Beach's great past, almost inevitable downturn, and return to life with the discovery of South Beach and a renewed interest in art deco.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing

About this book
Miami Beach began its rise to the top of the world's resort scene when Carl Fisher, builder of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, arrived prior to 1920. The lure of "The World's Playground" was impossible to ignore for many, as hotels and restaurants flourished, even through the Great Depression. The images in this volume evoke poignant memories of Miami Beach's great past, almost inevitable downturn, and return to life with the discovery of South Beach and a renewed interest in art deco. Among the vintage views, most of which have never before been published, are early Lincoln Road and Washington Avenue; Miami Beach High School; Parham's; Junior's; Wolfies; Pumperniks; the first hotel on Miami Beach, Brown's; the Roney Plaza; the Fontainebleau; and, of course, the people who helped create this modern paradise.

Lost Miami Beach

Creator: Carolyn Klepser | History - 2014-09-23

Join historian Carolyn Klepser as she rediscovers through words and pictures the lost treasures of Miami Beach and recounts the changes that sparked a renowned preservation movement.

Publisher: The History Press

About this book
Miami Beach has been “America’s Playground” for a century. Still one of the world’s most popular resorts, its 1930s Art Deco architecture placed this picturesque city on the National Register of Historic Places. Yet a whole generation of earlier buildings was erased from the landscape and mostly forgotten: the house of refuge for shipwrecked sailors, the oceanfront mansions of Millionaires’ Row, entrepreneur Carl Fisher’s five grand hotels, the Community Theatre, the Miami Beach Garden and more. Join historian Carolyn Klepser as she rediscovers through words and pictures the lost treasures of Miami Beach and recounts the changes that sparked a renowned preservation movement.

Great history book of Miami Beach.

5/5 mary c. kerr - See all my reviews This review is from: LOST MIAMI BEACH (Paperback) I didn't buy the book on Amazon, but it is a fantastic history of Miami Beach. Our son and family bought an older home there and it was fascinating to read the history of the area where they live. A great deal of research went into writing this and it is an invaluable background for learning about Miami Beach history. The real Miami Vice

An enthralling behind the scenes look at the inner workings of the politics of Miami Beach and the birth of South Beach. As the new kid on the block, Daoud shows readers that he is an unwitting lamb going to slaughter as he embarks on his path in politics. This book is an exciting, rollicking, suspenseful page-turner--I absolutely could not put it down! This book has something for everyone: a nieve protagonist, sex, bribery, action-packed chase scenes, criminals, Miami Vice appearances, cleandestine meetings, Mariel refugees, police in hot pursuit, love interests, flashy South Beach developers, and Dauod's trial. Daoud's story is sure to be a movie --he's led a multifaceted life loaded with intrigue and twists and turns.Daoud's story begins with his entre into local Miami Beach politics as a young, nieve law school graduate whose political aspirations stem from his desire to help the downtrodden seniors who populated Miami Beach in the 70s and 80s. He succeeds by being... 5/5 Ruth A. Weiss (boca raton, FL United States) - See all my reviews, May 20, 2008

A scandalous depiction of South Beach and its players

The Sins of South Beach is a "scandalous" depiction of the rise of South Beach and the painful decline of a great man. I found the book to be a riveting tale of corruption, intrigue, and passion. As a frequent visitor to Miami over the years and a nine year resident, I have always been fascinated with how this city has gone through such a rapid and extreme transformation. Alex Daoud bravely told the story of his own young ambition that was always motivated by good intentions. With all of the good he did for the discarded elderly and dilapidated diamond in the ruff that was Miami Beach, he still fell prey to the temptations of power. The era known as the days of the "Cocaine Cowboys" was the critical time that Alex was a rising player in Miami politics and mayor of Miami Beach. His candid and unapologetic account of those days reads like a novel yet is based on real life events. I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't one day turned into a movie. I highly recommend this book to anyone who... 5/5 Jeannette S. Lived to tell

As a survivor of the same era on the Beach that Mayor Daoud writes about, I was completely absorbed by his story. The staccato pace does not let up -- from his idealistic beginning in politics, through his decline down the slippery slope of power brokering and fast living, to the abyss of the lonely realizations of the ramifications of his actions, right up to his final choice.Mayor Daoud tells his story without making excuses. He captures the mood on the Beach during the eighties and nineties. Some people are no doubt going to be miffed by his account -- he spares no one and even the good guys have a bit of soil on their souls -- but it is his story and he sticks to it.The book is remarkable. Daoud is a metaphor for the Beach -- they both get down in the gutter and get dirty, rise up like phoenixes, and enjoy a remarkable rebirth after the fall.Reading the book gave me, once again, a true appreciation of my hometown and a bittersweet pride in... 5/5 D.
