Readers can explore the unique character of each state-its land and waterways; its history; its government and economy; its festivals, cultural diversity, landmarks, and exciting stories of success. Celebrate the States, second edition, brings the series into the twenty-first century and updates the original titles to reflect the changes that have gripped the state in the past five to ten years. the second edition features a new design and all new photographs. Also included is a new chart showing the breakdown of the state's workforce and two new maps. One shows the state divided by county, and the other presents the population distribution. the structure has been slightly changed as well. While the profiles of state luminaries remain in the back matter, the government and economy are given expanded coverage, each in its own chapter.

Michigan (America Series - Mini)
Book (Whitecap Books Ltd.)
List Price: $12.95
Great pictures. Great quality.
We bought several of these as gifts for folks overseas and love them. Great pictures. Love the hardback version. Great price. What more could you want. Just nice quality all the way through and this from someone who is extremely picky about photo quality. I've personally shot enough around Michigan to know what great photos should look like and this one delivers. 5/5 MichiganTraveler (Midland, MI United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Wonderfully written...beautifully illustrated!

Backroads & Byways of Michigan: Drives, Day Trips & Weekend Excursions (Backroads & Byways)
Book (Countryman Press)
List Price: $18.95
Great Guide
I found this guide to be exceptionally well-written and informative. As a Michigan native who moved away for many years, I was happily re-connected with routes and sites that I had either completely forgotten about or never even knew existed. This is a great book for anyone looking for a good guide to some of Michigan's hidden treasures. Kudos to the author for his impeccable research. 5/5 Verbal Kint - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) It Happened in Michigan: Remarkable Events That Shaped History (It Happened In Series)
Book (Globe Pequot)
List Price: $14.95
Simple, yet captivating
I just got this book, and I read about a half of it so far. The stories are very captivating, and full of details, yet short and interesting in every part. This is one of those "history" books that is 100% alive, because it doesn't just describe events as dry facts, but brings them to life instead. Even though it's a selection of only a number of events, it will help one comprehend Michigan's history (and hence, presence) in a much better and easier way. The only thing I found peculiar is that the author, who is by her own admittance of Croatian origin, tries to emphasize the presence of Croatian immigrants in the U.P., and make them seem like a very important group (not that anyone is unimportant, just proportionally speaking), but my historic research so far mentions them as one of the smallest communities of immigrants. Aside from that tiny personal bias, the book is amazing. Thumbs up! 5/5 AJ/DJ (Michigan) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Easy read. Fun read. For those who enjoy Michigan history. Most of the stories I was vaguely familiar with, but it was fun to revisit them once again. Ms. Burcar does a good job of educating the reader on these occurrences in few words and does it in an entertaining fashion. Definitely worth the time and effort for those who find Michigan history interesting. No real revelations here, but fun nonetheless. 5/5 Michigan Reviewer (holland, MI USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: It Happened in Michigan: Remarkable Events That Shaped History (It Happened In Series) (Paperback) Easy read. Moon Michigan (Moon Handbooks)
Book (Avalon Travel Publishing)
List Price: $19.99
A good basic start to Michigan.
I spent 9 days wandering around Michigan this summer and this was my guide. I went from Detroit to the top of the Upper Peninsula and back down the West Coast of Michigan without too many definite plans. As I would roll into each city I would pull over and flip to the index for a quick summary and found many pleasant surprises awaiting me. Does this book cover everything? How could any book sum up the lives of 9 million people in a few hundred pages! It lists some history, interesting sights and a couple of restaurants for each place. It does an excellent job of getting you to the middle of the action and then it's your job to do the rest, which is most of the fun in travel anyway. This book is a good frame to build a Michigan trip around. 4/5 Bakuhatsu (High in the Rockies) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This guide seems perfectly okay but lacks some of the offbeat and fun suggestiions of other guides. I like to read about special local cuisine or offbeat drives but there aren't a lot of these. Maybe it's the subject matter. It is quite complete. The Kindle edition has low resolution maps which are virtually unreadable when you try to zoom in. 3/5 Steve (Morro Bay, CA USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Moon Michigan (Moon Handbooks) (Kindle Edition) This guide seems perfectly okay but lacks some of the offbeat and fun suggestiions of other guides. This book was soooooo interesting. I couldn't put it down. It seems like most of the weird things though are out of my reach as I live in south-western Michigan and a lot of the really weird stuff in in the north and far west of Michigan. Interesting, for example: Darwin Road leads to Hell. Hm . . . it really does. Darwin Road will lead you into the city of Hell, Michigan. Also, Paradise, Michigan is almost exactly 666 miles from Hell, Michigan. Wow!!! Also, we here in Brighton have known for years about the satanic cults, but reading about them in this book reinforced that. And much much more. The pictures are good too. Worth buying and reading. 5/5 Dee from Gary, Indiana (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Weird Michigan: Your Travel Guide to Michigan's Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets (Hardcover) This book was soooooo interesting. Michigan Off the Beaten Path, 10th: A Guide to Unique Places (Off the Beaten Path Series)
Book (GPP Travel)
List Price: $14.95
Worth It
As you would expect from the title, this book will take you to places you would never find otherwise. The first place I was taken (Kitch-Iti-Kipi) made the book worth the price to me. After the second good recommendation, I knew I had a valuable friend in my hand. This book is well organized and a pleasant read. Each chapter covers one of nine author-defined regions in Michigan (the UP is split into east and west). Within each chapter are subchapters for each of the region's counties, so it is easy to find adventures close to where you are or plan a road trip covering hundreds of miles. The writing itself is pleasant and somewhat playful, so it is an easy read after a hard day of exploring. It sometimes seems everything worth visiting in Michigan is at least an hour away from where you are. As a tourist, it is great to have a guide that helps you maximize the limited hours most of us have there. Consider this book a "must have" for your next Michigan... 5/5 John M. While I have lived in Michigan for 10 years, I am still discovering many unique places to hike and photograph in this state. In trying to learn more, I came across the book, "Off the Beaten Path" by Jim Dufresne which contained a lot of very useful information on places to see and go in all parts of Michigan. I found this book on Amazon, which is where I have found many books that aren't easily found, again at a few reasonable price. Having visited some of the places mentioned in the book, I feel that it will be very useful in going exploring to other Michigan areas that I want to see and photograph. 5/5 northern michigan hiker - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) List Price: $9.95
Good Night Michigan
I love this little book. Michigan was the site of our most favorite family vacation and with relatives there it stays a special destination. Reading the book brings back happy memories and will be fun to read to grandchildren some day. 5/5 Sarah Jane - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) We read this book almost every night. It's a cute story and has different pictures of different "attractions" in Michigan. I purchased a second one to give to my nephew. 5/5 Sammy "sally" - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I bought this book for our granddaughter because her daddy was born in Michigan and wanted her to get a glimpse of what Michigan has to offer. She loves it! 5/5 grams - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) A Michigan Man - 1891
Book (Fili-Quarian Classics)
List Price: $9.99
Perhaps should have been called "A Miserable Man"
Thank goodness this booklet is only seven pages long. This poor man was so miserable that I found myself actually hoping he could experience relief through death! My great-great-grandfather was a Michigan lumberman in the 1890s and I thought this might give me a bit of insight into his life; instead I found myself praying that his life in no way resembled the one recorded here. Other than the appreciation of nature and the soul's desire to live amidst God's creations rather than man's, I found nothing reflecting the spirit of Michigan or Michiganders. It's difficult to review this booklet simply because I'm still a bit bewildered about the purpose of the story. The best I can say, it is extremely short and inexpensive, so it's neither a waste of time nor money. 2/5 T-Marie (Grand Blanc, MI, United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I like to read anything to do with Michigan. This was well done and a good kindle purchase for those days when you're in the North woods of Michigan relaxing in a cabin :) 5/5 Charlene - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
