About this book
Monterey, California conjures images of a coastal city rimmed by crystal clear waters and bolstered by tourism; yet these edenic views belie the community's often turbulent history, originating with the Native Americans who lived here for a millennium and Hispanic exploration and colonization. At each stage in the growth of this city, residents have successfully overcome the division of multiple rule, diverse nationalities, and fledgling identities to fashion a homeland in the western landscape of America that is deservingly proud of its character and history.

    Over the moon about Monterey...

The area around Monterey Bay is perpetually popular with tourists and native Californians. Too few get past Cannery Row, the Aquarium and Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey to see the many other fine sights in the area. This Moon Handbook to Monterey & Carmel takes in the entire Monterey Peninsula, along with Monterey Bay as far north as the beach town of Santa Cruz, and the central coast as far south as the spectacular scenery of Big Sur.This handbook works systematically through the possibilities for visitors, beginning with Monterey and Carmel, and proceeding to Salinas,Santa Cruz, Big Sur, and Morro Bay, identifying museums, art galleries, beaches, parks, golf courses, restaurants, and places to stay. The concluding chapters address the unique geography of the area, along with some practicalities. The clear and easy to read text is very nicely supplemented by maps, diagrams, and photographs, both color and black and white. This Moon Handbook is pretty close... 5/5 D.S.Thurlow (California) - See all my reviews, November 14, 2013

This review is from: Moon Monterey & Carmel: Including Santa Cruz & Big Sur (Moon Handbooks) (Paperback) Just returned from a 10 day trip to the Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur areas. Used this guide after also looking at similar offerings from Lonely Planet and Fodors. Thought that this was the best laid out and easiest to read. Overall I'd say it was pretty accurate. Obviously I can't expect a book to cover everything in the area, but it was reasonably thorough. Used Yelp, and Urban Spoon to fill in what it wasn't able to say about all the places to eat. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 25, 2013

    Revelatory performances.

The film restoration work looks and sounds magnificent. Eddie Kramer gets extra congratulations on the 5.1 audio mix. That said, the 3rd disc is mainly in stereo only.Karen's review below is a bit harsh. If you actually listen to the main film's commentary, you will understand why more footage isn't available: Not every second of 3 days of performances were captured. Concert films did not exist as a genre at this time (see the annoyingly choppy 'Festival!' documenting Newport), so this was new territory and the point of the film was to make a document that gave an overall feel for the event and time. Pennebaker and his crew had to decide which songs to film, which seems to have been predetermined by Dylan's buddy Bob Neuwirth who was more familiar with the scene than the filmmaker. They would turn on a red light on stage to signal to start filming the next song. At some times, they didn't have a plan and the camera men would shoot at their discretion, so some performances... 5/5 Eric S. Stroud - See all my reviews, January 7, 2007

Essential but not complete. Where's Janis?

I begrudgingly give this DVD boxed set five stars because this is a fantastic, albeit incomplete, document of the most important rock event in history. Everyone who considers themselves to be a rock fan should own this set. Having said that, the filmmaker's idea of "complete" is questionable in terms of the long-awaited outtakes disc, especially when you consider that he devoted five, count 'em five, outtake songs to Tiny Tim, and only one (??!!!) to Janis Joplin, who was considered "the star" of the festival as stated by Mama Cass in her commentary included in the package. (Not to mention Big Brother guitarist James Gurley, who received equal praise at Monterey as did Janis.)This sad state of affairs is beyond explanation. Why wasn't Big Brother and the Holding Company accorded their entire set instead of one token song, which is "Combination of the Two?" There is very little footage of the singer that exists at all, anywhere. 0 5/5 W. J. Lloyd (California) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Monterey Bay Shoreline Guide (UC Press/Monterey Bay Aquarium Series in Marine Conservation) (Paperback) I thought I knew the Monterey region fairly well until I was given this book as a present! It is packed with great "bites" of information: natural history, human history, and how to get to all the beaches and parks. The writing is easy to understand, friendly in a way, and even fun. The maps are very helpful, and the book even has resource sections with phone numbers, website urls, and directions. AND, the photographs are stunning. A great gift for visitors, home libraries, or the glove compartment of your car. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 22, 1999

0 5/5 S. Young (Davenport, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Monterey Bay Shoreline Guide (UC Press/Monterey Bay Aquarium Series in Marine Conservation) (Paperback) I have lived in Santa Cruz County for 15 years and thought I knew the Monterey Bay coastal zone very well--that is, until I read Jerry Emory's Monterey Bay Shoreline Guide. This Guide is the best--it covers both familiar territory and less well-known aspects of the Monterey Bay and its coastal towns. I've found myself consulting it whenever I make any kind of shoreline jaunt, from discovering where one can walk one's dog on a beach in Carmel to locating the best on-shore whalewatching sites. The photos are beautiful as well as informative. The organization of the book, which includes sidebar articles on specific topics, lends itself to easy access for both the casual and serious reader. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 29, 1999

Hidden beaches and other great spots that I would never have known existed. Great information about how to get there, what to do and how it got there. Doesn't fit iPad gen 4 with case

I love Tumi bags. I have two Tumi backpacks and I get asked about them all the time. They're well made and look great...I purchased the Hickory color of this sling which is black with brown leather trim. The bag has a very unique but understated/business look that doesn't scream "man-bag". The front main compartment has a zipper that zips vertically the length of the bag and two accessory pockets on either side (one for phone/keys and another taller pocket ventilated for a bottle or umbrella). The main compartment is surprisingly roomy and useful. The back of the bag is stiff and padded to protect the iPad. My only negative with this bag is that the iPad compartment in the back is perfectly sized for a naked iPad. An iPad in a smart case will fit TIGHTLY but it's a complete hassle to insert and remove. However, I like this bag so much that i've stopped using a case on my iPad (I put a skin on the iPad). Without an iPad case, this bag will hold the iPad and... 4/5 C. Great for Tablet PC's ...

0 5/5 Taylorpamm - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Tumi Alpha Bravo, Monterey Sling (Accessory) I was specifically looking for a Tumi product that would be small, offer compartments for my business elements (keys, cards, pens, adapters, etc.) - and carry my tablet PC around with me over my shoulder. This (in my view) is the perfect business man's companion. I've owned many Tumi products in the past - and I purchased this one - to serve the 'everyday' - take my tablet with me wherever I'm going - function. This allows me the freedom of knowing - that if I need to give a presentation - I can immediately grab the tablet / adapter / pen and paper from the 'sling' and fire it up - and also knowing when people (at the end of the presentation) ask "Do you have a card" - reach into the sling and give it to them. For me - it's the only sling I carry - and I own 3 or 4 others - that are now 'collecting dust' in a closet somewhere. I love this Tumi sling. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 5, 2013

A Man Purse that Puts Heavy Emphasis on MAN

I got this bag to carry around my electronics, sunglasses, etc (i.e., a man purse). For being quite compact it actually offers a lot of carry space. In the longer of the two side zip pouches I keep an umbrella. In the smaller side pouch I keep a multi-tool (the Charge TTI), folding reading glasses, a pouch of Nintendo 3DS cartridges, headphones and a pen. In the front zip pouch I have 3 A/C adapters, an external battery power pack, sunglasses (Oakley Pit Boss II), a pouch of screwdriver bits for my multi-tool and Yaktrax cleats (for Winter only). In the tablet pouch I have a 8.9" Kindle HDX and a Nintendo 3DS. Basically, everything I need if I don't need a laptop. Carry capacity is just right for my needs.Aesthetically the Monterey Sling manages to take (almost all of) the purse out of what is clearly a man purse. It has a distinctly masculine feel that is also business appropriate. The quality of the nylon, stitching and hardware is all top notch (as I would... 5/5 Patrick A. The Whole of Monterey Bay and Beyond

One of the great blessings of living on the left coast is the fabulous year round hiking. Nowhere is such hiking more available than along the Monterey coast where temperatures are pleasant pretty much year round. But finding all the hiking opportunities in this region can take some work. Nearly all guidebooks take note of Point Lobos State Preserve, for example. It may not be the single best park in California's state park system, but it is certainly in the top five. The Elkhorn Slough Wildlife refuge is similarly well known. But many of the best trails in this region are found in hidden little preserves and regional parks. And the best way to find these hikes are in the pages of Robert Stone's revised and greatly expanded 'Day Hikes Around Monterey and Carmel.' This book contains 50 new hikes that are not found in the first edition which was itself a very nice volume.New hikes first. IT'S NICE TO HAVE THIS BACK IN CIRCULATION FOR THOSE WHO MISSED IT BEFORE

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE 2013 4 CD EDITION OF "THE MONTEREY INTERNATIONAL POP FESTIVAL".AMAZON NEEDS TO DIFFERENTIATE between various editions of this set and place reviews under the correct edition. Reviews under the "Monterey" heading, as I write this, include older editions and the more recent 2 CD edition. Confusing! Hopefully Amazon will correct this oversight. This is quite a time for fans of live music from the late 60's/early 70's. Not only this Monterey set, but the multi-disc 1972 concert from the Grateful Dead in Veneta, Oregon. Plus--The Beatles' Vol. 2 of their BBC recordings is set for release soon. So much music, so little time.In a nutshell-if you don't already own one of the earlier editions of this 4 CD set--this is worth purchasing. The Salvo label has done a good overall job of presenting this music in a package which this historic event demands. And when you consider the prices for earlier editions--it's a no-brainer... 5/5 Stuart Jefferson (San Diego,Ca) - See all my reviews, September 12, 2013

The best pop/rock music festival ever! The first one by the way!

Bought this one through Amazon UK (it reaches you faster in Colombia, never understood why). This box set I had bought it 20 years ago in an enormous box that I finally lost to a girlfriend. Now this box has a proper size and a definitely better sound (not pitches, like this edition from 1993). The booklet is the same I bought that time and is gorgeous, with quotes from all the musicians that took part in that wonderful festival. Monterey was organized by John Phillips, the composer and leader of that terrific vocal foursome, "Mamas and the Papas". The festival did not have the disastrous conditions of Woodstock and its audience, back there in 1967, was a manageable 200,000 people. Woodstock, in my humble opinion, had a taste of marketing, excess and musically talking a worst set of performers (the best names in Woodstock are in Monterey, with some exceptions like Ten Years After, Sly&The Family Stone and Santana) and a worst sound in the recordings (blame in on the logistic chaos... 5/5 O.
