The Death and Life of Monterey Bay, A Story of Revival

Creator: Stephen R Palumbi, Carolyn Sotka | Nature - 2011-01-26

The shores of Monterey Bay revived because of human passion—passion that enlivens every page of this hopeful book.

Publisher: Island Press

About this book
Anyone who has ever stood on the shores of Monterey Bay, watching the rolling ocean waves and frolicking otters, knows it is a unique place. But even residents on this idyllic California coast may not realize its full history. Monterey began as a natural paradise, but became the poster child for industrial devastation in John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row,and is now one of the most celebrated shorelines in the world.   It is a remarkable story of life, death, and revival—told here for the first time in all its stunning color and bleak grays. The Death and Life of Monterey Bay begins in the eighteenth century when Spanish and French explorers encountered a rocky shoreline brimming with life—raucous sea birds, abundant sea otters, barking sea lions, halibut the size of wagon wheels, waters thick with whales. A century and a half later, many of the sea creatures had disappeared, replaced by sardine canneries that sickened residents with their stench but kept the money flowing. When the fish ran out and the climate turned, the factories emptied and the community crumbled. But today, both Monterey’s economy and wildlife are resplendent. How did it happen?   The answer is deceptively simple: through the extraordinary acts of ordinary people. The Death and Life of Monterey Bay is the biography of a place, but also of the residents who reclaimed it. Monterey is thriving because of an eccentric mayor who wasn’t afraid to use pistols, axes, or the force of law to protect her coasts. It is because of fishermen who love their livelihood, scientists who are fascinated by the sea’s mysteries, and philanthropists and community leaders willing to invest in a world-class aquarium. The shores of Monterey Bay revived because of human passion—passion that enlivens every page of this hopeful book.

About this book
Monterey, California conjures images of a coastal city rimmed by crystal clear waters and bolstered by tourism; yet these edenic views belie the community's often turbulent history, originating with the Native Americans who lived here for a millennium and Hispanic exploration and colonization. At each stage in the growth of this city, residents have successfully overcome the division of multiple rule, diverse nationalities, and fledgling identities to fashion a homeland in the western landscape of America that is deservingly proud of its character and history.

Monterey's Waterfront

Creator: Tim Thomas, Dennis Copeland | History - 2006

On Monterey's waterfront the words sardine, salmon, mackerel, pompano, albacore, abalone, flounder, and squid were music to the ears of fishermen.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing

About this book
On Monterey's waterfront the words sardine, salmon, mackerel, pompano, albacore, abalone, flounder, and squid were music to the ears of fishermen. With its deep underwater canyon, Monterey Bay hosted a sealife jamboree long before the native Rumsien set out in small tule boats to harvest its bounty. It has sounded a siren call to fishermen and biologists ever since. Chinese fishermen pioneered modern commercial fishing in the 1850s, clustering in villages along Monterey's rugged coast. The cry "Baleia!" sounded through town, summoning Portuguese whalers to their longboats. Japanese divers in primitive hard-hat gear brought a sea snail called abalone to national attention, while Sicilians earned Monterey the title "sardine capital of the world." The railroad opened the way for visitors to discover this natural coastal paradise, now a tourist mecca.

    good upgraded pitcher

One of Brita's upgraded pitchers, this one works well. and is more ergonomic than the cheaper Brita Everyday Pitcher. I've pictured this Monterey alongside that Brita Everyday Pitcher (both are 10-cup capacity). I bought mine from Costco, which had a couple of additional color choices. As far as more ergonomic goes: The handle is more comfortable. The whole pitcher is well-balanced for two-handed use (the Everyday felt awkward when full). The water flows freely (no glugging, and it's fast). The smaller fill-opening is less prone to accidental contamination, and the water's surface is contained inside the fill structure (no accidental sloshing). And it looks nice. Pouring filtered water when the top is (mostly) filled worked reasonably well. Two filters are included, which adds some extra value to the pitcher purchase price.Quibbles: the flap piece over the pour spout kind of gets in the way (I removed it). Overfilling the top can result in unfiltered... 4/5 Omar Siddique (Maryland, USA) - See all my reviews, April 15, 2015

Doesn't hold filters in place effectively, but otherwise serves its purpose

A filter pitcher is a filter pitcher, right? Well, apparently it's not that simple. Every previous Brita pitcher we've owned has held the filter snugly in place. This one does not, so the filter frequently dislodges. This can mean that when you fill the pitched too high, the filter floats up into the unfiltered water. Or it can mean that the filter dislodges slightly and all of the water you pour into the reservoir goes AROUND the filter instead of through it. Or it can mean that you're pouring water into something, you let the pitcher go fully horizontal, and the filter slides out, crashes into the lid, pops the lid off, and both the lid and filter land in whatever you were adding water to.This pitcher is fine if you're very careful never to overfill it or turn it fully horizontal when pouring (even when exactly horizontal, the wall of the filter chute is sloped such that it slides out). The size is good for our needs, the indicator lights are helpful, and the pouring... 2/5 Erik Harris (Fairfax Station, VA USA) - See all my reviews, January 10, 2017

    Great looking, large capacity pitcher

We recently replaced our sink and faucet as part of a kitchen renovation. Our water had always tasted fine, but after we installed the new faucet and pipes, it's had a bit of a metallic flavor. Plumber said this was normal with brand-new pipes, but I still didn't really want to drink it.Ordered this pitcher in red to match our kitchen theme. It looks great and feels sturdy. The handle is super comfortable to hold, unlike some boxier Brita designs I've used in the past. It comes with two filters, so while the price is higher than some other Brita pitchers, you can knock a few bucks off for including a replacement filter. The filter was relatively easy to install and I love that the new filters don't need to soak in water like the old ones did a few years ago.My one slight complaint about this pitcher is that the top is at a slight angle, so you can't really fill the compartment all the way. It's still rather large, so it's not a huge deal, but you have to stop... 4/5 Mark B. Nolan - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
