About this book
Monterey, California conjures images of a coastal city rimmed by crystal clear waters and bolstered by tourism; yet these edenic views belie the community's often turbulent history, originating with the Native Americans who lived here for a millennium and Hispanic exploration and colonization. At each stage in the growth of this city, residents have successfully overcome the division of multiple rule, diverse nationalities, and fledgling identities to fashion a homeland in the western landscape of America that is deservingly proud of its character and history.

All Black Everything, and Just As I Wanted

0 5/5 simone - See all my reviews This review is from: Birkenstock Sandals ''Monterey'' from Leather in Black with a regular insole (Apparel) At first, I was skeptical about purchasing Birkenstocks from a third-party seller, but being that Amazon is the seller I felt a bit better about it.The sandals came in nearly a week earlier than the expected delivery date to my surprise! When I opened the box, it was like someone at an official seller had handed it to me to try on. The sandals fit wonderfully, but it took a day or two to get used to the arches because they were still initially. Two months later, I wear these sandals regularly to slip on for a quick errand or to keep an outfit casual. I love my Birkenstocks, and I'm so happy that Amazon sold this nearly sold out pair. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 20, 2014

This review is from: Birkenstock Sandals ''Monterey'' from Leather in Black with a regular insole (Apparel) Too bad I ordered these during winter, going to have to wait to wear then outside the house.Overall, very cute and well made shoes. I never owned Birkenstocks, so I'm not sure how comfortable they're supposed to fit, the footbed didn't seem very soft. Again, will have to wait to break these in until summer weather. But they're very wide and a lot of room to wiggle around in, so that's nice. They took awhile to get here, but coming from Germany, that's expected. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 13, 2014

The Whole of Monterey Bay and Beyond

One of the great blessings of living on the left coast is the fabulous year round hiking. Nowhere is such hiking more available than along the Monterey coast where temperatures are pleasant pretty much year round. But finding all the hiking opportunities in this region can take some work. Nearly all guidebooks take note of Point Lobos State Preserve, for example. It may not be the single best park in California's state park system, but it is certainly in the top five. The Elkhorn Slough Wildlife refuge is similarly well known. But many of the best trails in this region are found in hidden little preserves and regional parks. And the best way to find these hikes are in the pages of Robert Stone's revised and greatly expanded 'Day Hikes Around Monterey and Carmel.' This book contains 50 new hikes that are not found in the first edition which was itself a very nice volume.New hikes first. This book adds several hikes around Santa Cruz and south to the Monterey county... 5/5 Fritz R. Ward "dayhiker" (Crestline, CA United States) - See all my reviews, March 18, 2013

0 5/5 Taylorpamm - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Tumi Alpha Bravo, Monterey Sling (Accessory) I was specifically looking for a Tumi product that would be small, offer compartments for my business elements (keys, cards, pens, adapters, etc.) - and carry my tablet PC around with me over my shoulder. This (in my view) is the perfect business man's companion. I've owned many Tumi products in the past - and I purchased this one - to serve the 'everyday' - take my tablet with me wherever I'm going - function. This allows me the freedom of knowing - that if I need to give a presentation - I can immediately grab the tablet / adapter / pen and paper from the 'sling' and fire it up - and also knowing when people (at the end of the presentation) ask "Do you have a card" - reach into the sling and give it to them. For me - it's the only sling I carry - and I own 3 or 4 others - that are now 'collecting dust' in a closet somewhere. I love this Tumi sling. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 5, 2013

Doesn't fit iPad gen 4 with case

I love Tumi bags. I have two Tumi backpacks and I get asked about them all the time. They're well made and look great...I purchased the Hickory color of this sling which is black with brown leather trim. The bag has a very unique but understated/business look that doesn't scream "man-bag". The front main compartment has a zipper that zips vertically the length of the bag and two accessory pockets on either side (one for phone/keys and another taller pocket ventilated for a bottle or umbrella). The main compartment is surprisingly roomy and useful. The back of the bag is stiff and padded to protect the iPad. My only negative with this bag is that the iPad compartment in the back is perfectly sized for a naked iPad. An iPad in a smart case will fit TIGHTLY but it's a complete hassle to insert and remove. However, I like this bag so much that i've stopped using a case on my iPad (I put a skin on the iPad). Without an iPad case, this bag will hold the iPad and... 4/5 C. A Man Purse that Puts Heavy Emphasis on MAN

I got this bag to carry around my electronics, sunglasses, etc (i.e., a man purse). For being quite compact it actually offers a lot of carry space. In the longer of the two side zip pouches I keep an umbrella. In the smaller side pouch I keep a multi-tool (the Charge TTI), folding reading glasses, a pouch of Nintendo 3DS cartridges, headphones and a pen. In the front zip pouch I have 3 A/C adapters, an external battery power pack, sunglasses (Oakley Pit Boss II), a pouch of screwdriver bits for my multi-tool and Yaktrax cleats (for Winter only). In the tablet pouch I have a 8.9" Kindle HDX and a Nintendo 3DS. Basically, everything I need if I don't need a laptop. Carry capacity is just right for my needs.Aesthetically the Monterey Sling manages to take (almost all of) the purse out of what is clearly a man purse. It has a distinctly masculine feel that is also business appropriate. The quality of the nylon, stitching and hardware is all top notch (as I would... 5/5 Patrick A. I was there, now you can be, too.

Oh boy, Monterey Pop 1967. I was there and I loved every minute.2 years before Woodstock, over 200,000 young people descended upon a sleepy California fishing village for a 3 day celebration of music, peace, flowers, and love that heralded the beginning of "The Summer of Love".If you're goin'... wear some flowers in your hair. When I found this film, I knew I had to have it. And, I have not been disappointed. It's great. D.A. Pennebraker captured the reality of The First Annual International Monterey Pop Music Festival. (Unfortunately, it was also the last annual.) This documentary is raw, gritty, and filled with sights and sounds you won't find in any Hollywood portrayal of the "hippie movement". 0 4/5 gene blue (Chicago's North Side (Edgewater)) - See all my reviews This review is from: Monterey Pop:the Film [VHS] (VHS Tape) Janis Joplin blew this crowd away. It is spectacular to watch the reaction from Mama Cass as her mouth literally drops open and to hear the screams from this audience when Janis sings Ball and Chain. By the way this performance is on the 3-CD boxed set released in 1993 called Janis. And to be sure Janis wasn't the only reason to watch Monterey, a haunting set from Otis (a god) and a little heard of guitarist named Jimi Hendrix (a god). This was not my generation having only recently graduated high school, but why oh why can't concerts be this beautiful with so little aggression any more? 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 25, 2000

"Monterey Pop": A REAL Hippie Music Experience

"Monterey Pop" captures the real essense of a "Hippie" music festival preceding slick commercial "pseudo-Hippie" productionsWith often-jerky hand-held cameras, D. A. Pennepaker brings together color, clothing and culture of the Hippie period supported by its musical boundaries.Present are mainstream Simon & Garfunkel, R&B's Otis Redding, and exotic Hugh Masakela and Marion Makeba's African folk/jazz. Included are Rock's lesser knowns Scott McKenzie, Canned Heat, Country Joe and the Fish and Eric Burdon and the Animals. Featured are "big names": The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Mommas and Poppas, Janis Joplin & Big Brother, Jefferson Airplane. An exciting 18-minute Ravi Shankar raga melds two worlds as a fitting finale. An undercurrent of the film is how Pennepaker catches a "hippie" vs "mainstream" motif. Yes, yarn snobs, it's acrylic. But it is a fine yarn, I have found that it holds up very well over time, washes wonderfully, and everytime I wash it, it gets softer. Not all, but some yarn'ers will just automatically poo-poo a yarn simply because it's not an overly (beyond what it's worth) expensive high-end yarn from some trendy LYS. and *GASP!* I've even knitted with it! so now, the knit-police can come and get me. It's....so....soft....

This yarn is almost impossibly soft. Ridiculously, wonderfully, amazingly soft. I wish I could convey adequately how insanely soft this stuff is, but unless you feel it for yourself, words won't do it justice. I got 3 skeins of it (in Billings Chocolate) to make a scarf and I'd like to get more in a variety of other colors.I'm knitting on size 14 needles, and this stuff knits up really quickly. Also, its bulkiness seems to be forgiving when it comes to sloppy stitching (I knit on the train and the motion can sometimes mess with my ability to keep consistent tension). The resulting knit is fantastically soft (have I mentioned how soft this yarn is?), thick and cozy, and remarkably stretchy..So, if this yarn is so fantastic, why not 5 stars? Well, I notice that the strand seems to come apart pretty easily. I've stuck the needle into the strand more than once, and met no resistance. great acrylic yarn

0 5/5 bakergirl - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Lion Brand Yarn 135-149K Hometown USA Yarn, Dallas Grey (Misc.) This acrylic has a more pleasant texture than many and is quite affordable. I needed enough yarn for an adult-sized afghan, I didn't want to spend a bundle, and I needed the yarn to be easy to care for (the afghan was a gift for my college-age brother, who doesn't have the time or desire to handwash a blanket). I checked out several other yarns before learning about this one. All were either too expensive or the wrong weight. I even tried doubling up a worsted-weight yarn, but it just didn't do the trick. Then a friend recommended Hometown USA. It was exactly what I needed, both in terms of usability and price. I've already purchased more for a second afghan for my husband, who is quite particular about fabric texture. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 26, 2011
