The Death and Life of Monterey Bay, A Story of Revival

Creator: Stephen R Palumbi, Carolyn Sotka | Nature - 2011-01-26

The shores of Monterey Bay revived because of human passion—passion that enlivens every page of this hopeful book.

Publisher: Island Press

About this book
Anyone who has ever stood on the shores of Monterey Bay, watching the rolling ocean waves and frolicking otters, knows it is a unique place. But even residents on this idyllic California coast may not realize its full history. Monterey began as a natural paradise, but became the poster child for industrial devastation in John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row,and is now one of the most celebrated shorelines in the world.   It is a remarkable story of life, death, and revival—told here for the first time in all its stunning color and bleak grays. The Death and Life of Monterey Bay begins in the eighteenth century when Spanish and French explorers encountered a rocky shoreline brimming with life—raucous sea birds, abundant sea otters, barking sea lions, halibut the size of wagon wheels, waters thick with whales. A century and a half later, many of the sea creatures had disappeared, replaced by sardine canneries that sickened residents with their stench but kept the money flowing. When the fish ran out and the climate turned, the factories emptied and the community crumbled. But today, both Monterey’s economy and wildlife are resplendent. How did it happen?   The answer is deceptively simple: through the extraordinary acts of ordinary people. The Death and Life of Monterey Bay is the biography of a place, but also of the residents who reclaimed it. Monterey is thriving because of an eccentric mayor who wasn’t afraid to use pistols, axes, or the force of law to protect her coasts. It is because of fishermen who love their livelihood, scientists who are fascinated by the sea’s mysteries, and philanthropists and community leaders willing to invest in a world-class aquarium. The shores of Monterey Bay revived because of human passion—passion that enlivens every page of this hopeful book.

About this book
Monterey, California conjures images of a coastal city rimmed by crystal clear waters and bolstered by tourism; yet these edenic views belie the community's often turbulent history, originating with the Native Americans who lived here for a millennium and Hispanic exploration and colonization. At each stage in the growth of this city, residents have successfully overcome the division of multiple rule, diverse nationalities, and fledgling identities to fashion a homeland in the western landscape of America that is deservingly proud of its character and history.

Monterey's Waterfront

Creator: Tim Thomas, Dennis Copeland | History - 2006

On Monterey's waterfront the words sardine, salmon, mackerel, pompano, albacore, abalone, flounder, and squid were music to the ears of fishermen.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing

About this book
On Monterey's waterfront the words sardine, salmon, mackerel, pompano, albacore, abalone, flounder, and squid were music to the ears of fishermen. With its deep underwater canyon, Monterey Bay hosted a sealife jamboree long before the native Rumsien set out in small tule boats to harvest its bounty. It has sounded a siren call to fishermen and biologists ever since. Chinese fishermen pioneered modern commercial fishing in the 1850s, clustering in villages along Monterey's rugged coast. The cry "Baleia!" sounded through town, summoning Portuguese whalers to their longboats. Japanese divers in primitive hard-hat gear brought a sea snail called abalone to national attention, while Sicilians earned Monterey the title "sardine capital of the world." The railroad opened the way for visitors to discover this natural coastal paradise, now a tourist mecca.

As effective as Malathion in controlling cabbage worms on cole crops and flea beetles on eggplant

I purchased this product to continue my transition to a more nearly organic approach to pest control in my garden (I still resort to Malathion for certain pests). Now, after two thirds or so of the season is behind me, I want to put in my report.I used the Monterey Spinosad product on vegetables (squash, eggplant, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and okra), fruits (primocane raspberries before flowering, apples, plums--both Japanese and European Gage varieties, quince, peach, black currants, red currants, and gooseberries), and one ornamental--hollyhocks.I used a 2 gallon RoundUp pump sprayer set to deliver almost a mist and followed the directions carefully about making sure the product remained well mixed and never saw a single sign of burning on any of the plants, including those with new growth, which was effectively all of them, including the various fruits (I mention this here because it was a complaint of one user). When applying it to... 5/5 D. 5/5 Kristin Crow - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Monterey Garden Insect Spray with Spinosad Concentrate 16oz (Lawn & Patio) We used this product on our plants that had spider mites living on them. We noticed a difference the day after we sprayed the plants. The webbing began to disappear. After a week, we are free of spider mites. This is a concentrate, so the actual product is good for many uses. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 4, 2016

Lindsay Hatton writes beautiful prose. She shows the reader her hometown as it was in the 1940s, when the fishing and canning industries were the town's economic mainstay. Fifteen-year-old Margot Fiske arrives in Monterey, California with her eccentric father and hates everything about the town. Margot has never been to school. She has always worked as her father's business apprentice. She gets a job as a specimen artist with biologist Ed Ricketts, whom John Steinbeck portrays as "Doc" in his novella "Cannery Row." What ensues is a love affair between Margot and Ricketts, a known womanizer. Steinbeck is a minor character in "Monterey Bay". Although I found Hatton's first novel a very good read, I had some difficulty relating to the teenage protagonist. It is hard for me to believe that one who has never had any formal education could be as knowledgeable as Margot appears to be. She is also moody and quirky. not easy to like. I loved this book!

5/5 Ron - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Monterey Bay: A Novel (Hardcover) A beautifully-written homage to the "Cannery Row" days of Monterey, California, populated wiith some of the real people of the time: John Steinbeck, Ed "Doc" Rickettes and the rest, accompanied by fictional charaacters that come to life. If you are a Steinbeck fan, you'll want to take a look at this one. If you know and love Monterey, you'll have no trouble navigating these pages. A fine piece of fiction from a new author.
