Lost Myrtle Beach

Creator: Becky Billingsley | History - 2014-06-10

Join author Becky Billingsley for a trip back in time as she examines some of the city’s most memorable attractions.

Publisher: The History Press

About this book
Myrtle Beach has long been a favorite vacation spot for families across America, giving parents and children alike a lifetime of memories. The Myrtle Beach Pavilion, considered by many to be the heart of the city since 1908, was demolished in 2007. The Ocean Forest Hotel was as beautiful as a castle, and resembled one, during its forty-four-year span. Members of World War II’s Doolittle Raid trained at the Myrtle Beach General Bombing and Gunnery Range, which eventually became Myrtle Beach Air Force Base until its closure in 1993. Join author Becky Billingsley for a trip back in time as she examines some of the city’s most memorable attractions.

Myrtle Beach and Conway in Vintage Postcards

Creator: Susan Hoffer McMillan | History - 2001

These images also tell the stories of other Grand Strand beaches, as well as of Conway, a quintessential Southern city with historic properties and live oak canopies.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing

About this book
The connections between Myrtle Beach and Conway, South Carolina form an intricate tapestry of contrasting threads-from the neon glitz of the beach resort to the more reserved colonial town that spawned it. Conway citizens enjoyed the coastal town as a playground in the 19th century, and many even helped steer its evolution during the 20th century into a premier vacation destination by relocating to Myrtle Beach to shape and share in its future. Through more than 200 postcards, many dating from the early 1900s, readers witness a wide array of architecture, from the Ocean Forest Hotel and the early Myrtle Beach Pavilion to the local landmarks that were destroyed by Hurricane Hazel in October 1954. These images also tell the stories of other Grand Strand beaches, as well as of Conway, a quintessential Southern city with historic properties and live oak canopies.

5/5 Judy Winn - See all my reviews This review is from: Lost Myrtle Beach (Kindle Edition) I am a born and raised South Carolinian who didn't grow up going to Myrtle Beach on vacations - even from just 4.5 hours away. However, I have now lived here for 10 years and I must confess that, after reading Becky's book, I realize just how much I've missed by not vacationing here and how much I've learned about its beginnings. This is a must read for anyone who has frequented the Grand Strand. Way to go Becky for doing your research and sharing it with us.Grand Strand Winn Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 7, 2015

3/5 TMac (NC, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand (SC) (Images of America) (Paperback) This was a good book, don't get me wrong. Lots of old rare pictures and postcards of Myrtle Beach of yesterday. But none of the photos in the book are in color. Everything is in black and white including the photos from the 1970-2000's that obviously are in color. And that was kind of disappointing to me. But I still overall enjoyed the book. Great clean romance!

5/5 Kindle Customer - See all my reviews This review is from: Meet Me in Myrtle Beach (Hunt Family Book 1) (Kindle Edition) I have to admit this is the first book I have read by this author. I must also admit it will not be the last. I am a fan of Belle Calhoun as well and Brooke St James is in the same category with me as Belle Calhoun. I REALLY appreciate clean romance novels and I would like to thank Brooke for being another clean author. I will add her to my favorite list of clean authors! 5/5 Yasmin Hussein - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Meet Me in Myrtle Beach (Hunt Family Book 1) (Kindle Edition) I'm a huge fan of Brooke St. James and this one just got added to my list of favorites from her. When Lightning Strikes, Finally My Forever, and now Meet Me in Myrtle Beach are my favorites by far. I can't wait to read it again. Paige is so far my favorite character out of all the books. Too bad she isn't real...I'd love to meet her! I hope book 2 is just as great! Thanks for writing clean, Christian stories for us romantics out there. I appreciate it more than I can express! This review is from: Meet Me in Myrtle Beach (Hunt Family Book 1) (Kindle Edition) Who knew that breakfast with a sweet grandmother and stranger could change Paige's life? After agreeing to work for her she finds herself swept up in a most unusual job--enjoy two weeks at Myrtle Beach with all the family as well. Paige fits in right away and discovers more there than just friendship--loved the plot and conversations. Clean and yet warm and wonderful--loved it!
