About this book
Naples celebrates the story of one of southwest Florida's most renowned beach resorts, from its tenuous beginning in 1885 through the tumultuous year of 1960, when Hurricane Donna nearly destroyed the town once hailed as the "Summerland in Wintertime." Founded as a place where "invalids can escape the chilling blasts of winter," the distant paradise was accessible only by boat, and by 1890, the new town boasted a pier, the Naples Hotel-and little else. With train service arriving in Naples in 1927 and the opening of the Tamiami Trail in 1928, the once-remote resort was finally open to development, but the Depression turned the dreamed-of boom into a bust until after World War II. The picture-perfect beaches and warm winter climate were soon "rediscovered," and by the time Hurricane Donna stormed ashore on September 10, 1960, Naples was the fastest-growing city in Collier County.

Wherever you live, you may have never heard of a town named after its Mediterranean counterpart— Naples.

Publisher: Twin Lights Publishers

About this book
Wherever you live, you may have never heard of a town named after its Mediterranean counterpart— Naples. Residents, highly protective of their slice of heaven, try to maintain hushed tones about how perfect living can be in an earthly paradise. To those who have uncovered her splendor, Naples’ reputation is that of a coveted vacation and seasonal destination for celebrities, Silicon Valley company executives, and professionals from every walk of life. Enamored with the temperate climate and irresistible Gulf breezes that blow warm from sun-up to after dark, snow birds, visitors, and locals are perpetually delighted as they move about their day with the aid of perfect weather. The wonder of spotting Naples’ estuary wildlife, marine animals, land and seabirds winging through their natural habitats makes Naples a beloved destination for flora and fauna devotees and eco-tourists alike. Sighting one of 350 pairs of bald eagles, or an American alligator, languid sea turtles, Florida panthers to graceful dolphins and wintering manatees make the area a bonanza for eco-tourists. Enjoy this extraordinary photographic journey and be mesmerized by all that Naples was, is and what it will become.

    A decent guide

3/5 LittleTank (Metro Washington D.C., USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Explorer's Guide Sarasota, Sanibel Island & Naples: A Great Destination (Sixth Edition) (Explorer's Great Destinations) (Paperback) Why do most tour guides apparently think there is nothing between Naples and Sarasota when there is?? Wish that area were covered better. North Sarasota is barely addressed, which is unfortunate, and more restaurant reviews would be very helpful, along with info re family-friendliness. Too many guides omit "kid-friendly" specifics on restaurants, it seems. All in all, it's a decent guide, and I would think it would be fairly helpful but not as informative as it could be, especially on unique sights. Memories relived

5/5 mtn. theologian - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Naples (FL) (Images of America) (Paperback) Fine historic pictures of a wonderful time and place.I came to Florida as a resident in the late fifties and remember a smaller, much less cosmopolitan Naples and Collier County; then a sleepy fishing village except during the tourist months.Back in the days when one arrived down theTamiami Trail thru the Everglades, Monroe Station hog roast and long before Alligator Alley. It brings back a lot of happy memories. Longtime Naples resident gives 2 thumbs up!

As a long time Naples resident AND a former Chamber of Commerce employee, I'm always hesitant when a new book about my hometown comes out. There are many facets to Naples/Collier County and, inevitably, the writer always misses some key component. Not this time!I was very impressed with Shivers' comprehensive yet nicely concise overview of the Naples area. She really captures the different dimensions of the community well, exploring not only the wealthy residential pockets and pastimes, but also the flavor of life of those working, living and raising their families year round. As I read the book, I caught myself a few times mentally saying "ah, but she missed this part". And then I would turn the page, and, right on cue, the piece I thought was missing was right there. I even learned a few tidbits that I didn't know - and I've been here the better part of 30 years! This is a must read for anyone relocating to the Naples area. A must read for those moving to or living in Naples, Fl!

5/5 Robin - See all my reviews This review is from: Moving to Naples: The Un-Tourist Guide (Paperback) Since relocating to Southwest Florida about two months ago we have referred to Alysia Shivers' book "Moving to Naples, the Un-tourist Guide" quite frequently. Whether we were searching for specific restaurant/cuisine, or help in navigating through the numerous tasks related to moving - license plates, driver license, healthcare, voter registration, utilities, etc., we soon found Shivers' book to be our "go to" source for information. We found the book to be very helpful, clear and concise and saved us a lot of time. "Moving to Naples" is a must read for anyone planning to move to the area, has recently moved and even long term residents of the area that want to re-discover their hometown! The Best Moving Guide

5/5 Michelle B. - See all my reviews This review is from: Moving to Naples: The Un-Tourist Guide (Paperback) I sure wish this book was available 7 years ago. Back then, I moved to Naples without a job, without a permanent place to live, and a two-year old toddler, I had no idea where to start. And, now that we are considering moving to a new community in Naples, I still have plenty of questions about neighborhoods and schools. So, I was surprised by how helpful Moving to Naples was in thinking about that move. This book is loaded with information that's really vital for new arrivals. I can't recommend it highly enough. This review is from: Day Hiking Southwest Florida: A Guide to the Best Trail Adventures in Greater Naples and Fort Myers (A Florida Quincentennial Book) (Paperback) This book was exactly what I was looking for. It starts with the Table of Contents which simply tells you which page the details for each hike is on, then the Hike Locator Map so you have an idea where the hikes are without having to look up each one individually, then a Hike at a Glance section so that you can easily narrow your choices by length, difficulty, or what you will see, then the main part of the book which describes each hike and has the perfect amount of detail to get more out of it. We have had this book for a month and have done five hikes so far, and this book goes with us each time. Naples Florida Botanical Garden - Mosaic Wall Postcard

naples, florida, botanical, gardens, brazilian,
The image on this colorful postcard is the Mosaic and waterfall at the Burle Marx Plaza in the Brazilian garden of the Naples Botanical Gardens. It is one of seven distinct natural habitats and ecosystems within the 170-acre cultivated gardens and preservation land that feature over 1,000 species. There is a special emphasis on the ecosystems of the 26th parallel north. The Gardens are conveniently located only 3 miles from downtown Naples, Florida, and are a popular Wedding destination and venue for private events. The vibrant colors on the postcard consist mainly of royal blue, sky blue, green and a splash of yellow and orange. The text on the front reads, 'Naples Botanical Gardens,' and the top back of the postcard has a brief description of the image. Both, however, may be personalized with the text of your choice.
