Retire in Style, 60 Outstanding Places Across the USA and Canada

Creator: Warren R. Bland | 2005-02-05

Naples, Florida First settled in the 1880s when it was accessible only by water, Naples remained a remote outpost in coastal southwest Florida until its isolation was broken by the arrival of the railroad in 1927.

Publisher: Next Decade

About this book
Seventy-six million American and 10 million Canadian "baby boomers" born between 1946 and 1964 are moving toward retirement in an era of increasing affluence and mobility. Providing information on 60 of the communities that are most rich in amenities across North America, this handy sourcebook guides retirees toward outstanding places to spend their golden years. Careful consideration was given to the final 12 criteria covered for each place—landscape, climate, quality of life, cost of living, transportation, retail services, health care, community services, cultural activities, recreational activities, work/volunteer activities, and crime—and each review includes a discussion of each characteristic as well as a city map and climatic table. Structured regionally rather than alphabetically, this revised and updated edition enables readers to search similar options based on general areas in both the United States and Canada.

Longtime Naples resident gives 2 thumbs up!

As a long time Naples resident AND a former Chamber of Commerce employee, I'm always hesitant when a new book about my hometown comes out. There are many facets to Naples/Collier County and, inevitably, the writer always misses some key component. Not this time!I was very impressed with Shivers' comprehensive yet nicely concise overview of the Naples area. She really captures the different dimensions of the community well, exploring not only the wealthy residential pockets and pastimes, but also the flavor of life of those working, living and raising their families year round. As I read the book, I caught myself a few times mentally saying "ah, but she missed this part". And then I would turn the page, and, right on cue, the piece I thought was missing was right there. I even learned a few tidbits that I didn't know - and I've been here the better part of 30 years! This is a must read for anyone relocating to the Naples area. A must read for those moving to or living in Naples, Fl!

0 5/5 Robin - See all my reviews This review is from: Moving to Naples: The Un-Tourist Guide (Paperback) Since relocating to Southwest Florida about two months ago we have referred to Alysia Shivers' book "Moving to Naples, the Un-tourist Guide" quite frequently. Whether we were searching for specific restaurant/cuisine, or help in navigating through the numerous tasks related to moving - license plates, driver license, healthcare, voter registration, utilities, etc., we soon found Shivers' book to be our "go to" source for information. We found the book to be very helpful, clear and concise and saved us a lot of time. "Moving to Naples" is a must read for anyone planning to move to the area, has recently moved and even long term residents of the area that want to re-discover their hometown! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 16, 2013

    The Best Moving Guide

0 5/5 Michelle B. - See all my reviews This review is from: Moving to Naples: The Un-Tourist Guide (Paperback) I sure wish this book was available 7 years ago. Back then, I moved to Naples without a job, without a permanent place to live, and a two-year old toddler, I had no idea where to start. And, now that we are considering moving to a new community in Naples, I still have plenty of questions about neighborhoods and schools. So, I was surprised by how helpful Moving to Naples was in thinking about that move. This book is loaded with information that's really vital for new arrivals. I can't recommend it highly enough. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 11, 2013

    A decent guide

0 3/5 Little Tank "LT" (Metro Washington D.C., USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Explorer's Guide Sarasota, Sanibel Island & Naples: A Great Destination (Sixth Edition) (Explorer's Great Destinations) (Paperback) Why do most tour guides apparently think there is nothing between Naples and Sarasota when there is?? Wish that area were covered better. North Sarasota is barely addressed, which is unfortunate, and more restaurant reviews would be very helpful, along with info re family-friendliness. Too many guides omit "kid-friendly" specifics on restaurants, it seems. All in all, it's a decent guide, and I would think it would be fairly helpful but not as informative as it could be, especially on unique sights. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 14, 2013

This review is from: Explorer's Guide Sarasota, Sanibel Island & Naples: A Great Destination (Sixth Edition) (Explorer's Great Destinations) (Paperback) paid about $15 for this and it's okay but then I went online to the Sanibel visitor center and they sent me a free book of info. Haven't read the free book yet to know whether it's as useful as the one I paid for. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 17, 2014

0 5/5 Big Pa - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Explorer's Guide South Florida: Includes Sarasota, Naples, Miami & the Florida Keys (Second Edition) (Explorer's Complete) (Paperback) I spend a couple months in south Florida every winter, and the Explorer's Guide hasn't steered me wrong yet. I had the 1st edition and snapped up the revised 2nd edition as soon as it was available. Very good recommendations for off-the-beaten-path restaurants and places to visit. Based on the number of dog-eared pages, this is my most used guide! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 6, 2012

Excellent guide to South Florida history, culture, and outdoors

This book is one of the three-part Florida series by the same authors, and it is as good as the others. We get such a thorough treatment of the area, from writers who obviously know and love it, that it's hard to imagine a better book for this purpose. The coverage is comprehensive, from the major cities to small rural communities. Listings are selective, as the authors have done a fine job presenting the accommodations, restaurants and sites they know will be of most interest. I lived in Vero Beach for a time, and I know that the sites they chose from the town are the best options. Two things really stand out about this book. As with the other Florida guides, this one gives us a complete picture of the region's natural attractions. Obviously, those attractions are a major tourist draw. But what's even better is that the authors have gone so far as to present the reader with many fine historical facts and sites, which are frequently overlooked in South... 5/5 Jon L. Loved it!

0 5/5 MaggieG - See all my reviews This review is from: Naples: Paradise Can Be Deadly (Kindle Edition) Riveting story with multiple twists and turns, packed with wry and sly humor. Lots of tidbits of information about the local culture of the Naples area infused in this great story. It's just plain fun to read. I live in Naples and would recommend to anyone who lives in Florida placing this book in their guest bedroom for their holiday visitors. It is a great read for the beach, poolside, bedtime, or the plane trip home. I dare anyone not to be charmed by Jazz Billings and her black lab Willie! I look forward to reading Diane Ketcham's next novel. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 17, 2013

All my snowbird friends will love this!

0 5/5 Lynda - See all my reviews This review is from: Naples: Paradise Can Be Deadly (Paperback) I just finished this; a great "beach book!" I'm not usually a murder mystery fan, but this one kept me guessing all the way to the end. As a teacher in an elite, mid-west high school, the characters really rang true to me. But the setting details of the Naples area gave the story its Florida flair. I can't wait to give this book to my snowbird friends when they get here. I'm sure they will recognize the people and places. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 9, 2013

    Thoroughly Enjoyable

0 5/5 VEZGrandma - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Naples: Paradise Can Be Deadly (Kindle Edition) I freely admit that I am predisposed to enjoying a book more if I am familiar with it's setting and this is no exception. This mystery is as good as any other of its genre that I have read and better than many. The plot twists and turns are a little different and I agree with the reviewers who think it would be a good movie for television. The characters are well defined and developed and the plot has good pacing. I read it in an afternoon (all afternoon!) and couldn't put it down. Sorry to see it end. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 26, 2013
