About this book
Newport Beach, with its picturesque harbor and 10 miles of sandy beaches, has seen great change since its beginnings in the post-Civil War era. Originally a shipping port, it evolved into a haven for movie stars, rumrunners, and gamblers and finally transformed into today's exclusive beach community and popular vacation destination.

    Pretty, but cheaply made

I got this fountain as a gift; it's not something I would have purchased myself, and certainly not for the current price ($25) on Amazon. Reviews I've read elsewhere indicate that it might not be very durable. Purchasers have reported that the motor eventually burns out, and some people have noted that it leaks. I haven't had these problems yet, but I have noted several shortcomings:*It's much smaller than you might expect, about 6.5 inches high and 5 inches wide (though, to be fair, the small size might be just what you're looking for).*It's made from some sort of resin or plastic, and it feels like it would be easy to break.*It does NOT come with an adapter. You must use 2 AA batteries (which other reviewers have said only last a day or so) or buy an adapter separately. I really can't imagine under what circumstances someone would only want to use a fountain for short periods of time, so not having a built-in or accompanying power supply is a clear sign... 3/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews, April 30, 2012

0 4/5 Cheryl Oleson (ALTA LOMA, CA, US) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Flowing Heart LED Fountain Indoor Water Feature (Kitchen) Ordered a total of 9 to use as table decorations for a wedding reception. One didn't work. Those that did are cute. Don't get them expecting to hear tranquil water sounds....too much motor hum. But worked well in a crowded room and got a lot of compliments. Also didn't come with nearly enough stones but it was an easy fix to get more at a craft store. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 12, 2013

    its junk

0 1/5 Kara - See all my reviews This review is from: Flowing Heart LED Fountain Indoor Water Feature (Kitchen) I bought this at a local store for roughly $10. It looks cute and I didn't care that it was plastic. What was slightly annoying was the lack of rocks, loud pump, and no adapter. What really irritates me about this product is that the same day I bought it it quit working. I thought maybe it was a battery eater, but no it just simply doesn't work anymore. I'm taking mine back to the store and getting credit put towards a different one. I only gave it one star because I like the design. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 10, 2013

A glimpse of the good times (?) of the Gilded Age

A master of historical fiction has given us yet another engaging storyline, this time set just before the turn of the last century. At its core is Sam Drubermann of Ohio, who worked his way up through the ranks of railroad barons and above-the-law capitalists to become one of the exalted, the upper crust of American society. Changing his last name to Driver to escape some past nastiness, Sam vows to live by a quote he once saw posted in Jay Gould's office: "Never let them get the best of you." To clear his dead wife's name and to establish a legacy for his daughter Jenny, Sam commissions a 20-room cottage to be built at the summer playground of the elite: Newport, Rhode Island. Jenny is intrigued by the promise of being accepted in such a world, but her head is simultaneously turned by a common Irish boy named Prince Molloy. Sam attempts to thwart any relationship between Jenny and Prince, preferring his daughter to marry someone more respectable, like architect... 5/5 Corinne H. An engrossing historical novel about class warfare at the turn of the century

In the late nineteenth century, Newport, Rhode Island was a vacation haven for the country's wealthiest families. It was a beacon for the likes of the Astors and the Vanderbilts, who built elaborate summer "cottages" along fashionable Bellevue Avenue. These mansions-turned-museums are now open to the public, allowing visitors a glimpse of the Gilded Age excess that once reigned supreme in this seaside resort. But even the most vivid imagination can't fully conjure the realities of Newport in its zenith --- unless you're historical fiction master John Jakes. In THE GODS OF NEWPORT, Jakes uses Newport as the backdrop for a story about class warfare --- not only between rich and poor but also old money versuses new wealth. In 1894, after the murder of his wife, self-made railroad mogul Samuel Driver is determined to break into the Newport social circle that once spurned his beloved spouse and find a rich and titled husband for his only child, Jenny.Sam and Jenny... 5/5 Bookreporter (New York, New York) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Gods of Newport (Hardcover) In the late nineteenth century, Newport, Rhode Island was a vacation haven for the country's wealthiest families. The real dirt on the eccentrics of Newport

This book makes Newport come alive. Sure, you can drive all around Newport's streets and see all the mansions one after the other, but Ed Morris provides the "inside story" about the lives of the real folks who lived in these mansions, their personalities and eccentricities.Ed Morris is a seasoned journalist with a flair for getting to the heart of the story"Thaw, who had been sitting in the rear table with Evelyn, pulled a pistol out of his coat pocket, walked up to White's table and shot him three times in the head, shouting "You'll never go out with that woman again!" He threw the gun on the floor. The music stopped, and the audience dashed for the exits. The police arrived and took Thaw into custody." Ed Morris makes history exciting. The book is broken into three parts. The first part explains the colorful colonial history of Newport. The second includes biographies of famous Newporters like Commodore Matthew C. Perry ("We have met the enemy,... 5/5 Jim Egan - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A great taste of historic Newport!

0 5/5 Pen Name - See all my reviews This review is from: Rogues and Heroes of Newport's Gilded Age (Paperback) After living on Aquidneck island all my life, hearing all the stories that happened in areas I drive by every day has been a fantastic experience. A great read with easy flow from section to section. I'm a younger reader and usually find historical content hard to get through but Ed's experience with the material is made quite obvious in this gilded age time capsule. I have not yet read his last book, but will definitely check it out. High props for making this read informative and lively! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 11, 2012
