Niagara Falls, Or Does It?

Creator: Henry Winkler, Lin Oliver | Juvenile Fiction - 2006-01-01

Fourth-graders Hank, Ashley, and Frankie are excitedly preparing for a magic show at the Rock 'N Bowl when Hank's creative alternative to an English essay lands him in detention and grounded the week of the show.

Publisher: ABDO

About this book
For Hank, fourth grade does not start out on the right foot. First of all, he gets called to the principal's office on the very first day of school. Then the first assignment his teacher gives him is to write five paragraphs on "What You Did This Summer." Hank is terrified-writing one good sentence is hard for him, so how in the world is he going to write five whole paragraphs? Hank comes up with a plan: instead of writing what he did on vacation, he'll show what he did. But when Hank's "living essay" becomes a living disaster, he finds himself in detention. Strangely enough, however, detention ends up becoming a turning point in his life.

Niagara Falls All Over Again

Creator: Elizabeth McCracken | Fiction - 2002-11-26

From the Hardcover edition.

Publisher: Delta

About this book
By turns graceful and knowing, funny and moving, Niagara Falls All Over Again is the latest masterwork by National Book Award finalist and author of The Giant’s House, Elizabeth McCracken. Spanning the waning years of vaudeville and the golden age of Hollywood, Niagara Falls All Over Again chronicles a flawed, passionate friendship over thirty years, weaving a powerful story of family and love, grief and loss. In it, McCracken introduces her most singular and affecting hero: Mose Sharp — son, brother, husband, father, friend ... and straight man to the fat guy in baggy pants who utterly transforms his life.To the paying public, Mose Sharp was the arch, colorless half of the comedy team Carter and Sharp. To his partner, he was charmed and charming, a confirmed bachelor who never failed at love and romance. To his father and sisters, Mose was a prodigal son. And in his own heart and soul, he would always be a boy who once had a chance to save a girl’s life — a girl who would be his first, and greatest, loss.Born into a Jewish family in small-town Iowa, the only boy among six sisters, Mose Sharp couldn’t leave home soon enough. By sixteen Mose had already joined the vaudeville circuit. But he knew one thing from the start: “I needed a partner,” he recalls. “I had always needed a partner.”Then, an ebullient, self-destructive comedian named Rocky Carter came crashing into his life — and a thirty-year partnership was born. But as the comedy team of Carter and Sharp thrived from the vaudeville backwaters to Broadway to Hollywood, a funny thing happened amid the laughter: It was Mose who had all the best lines offstage.Rocky would go through money, women, and wives in his restless search for love; Mose would settle down to a family life marked by fragile joy and wrenching tragedy. And soon, cracks were appearing in their complex relationship ... until one unforgivable act leads to another and a partnership begins to unravel. In a novel as daring as it is compassionate, Elizabeth McCracken introduces an indelibly drawn cast of characters — from Mose’s Iowa family to the vagabond friends, lovers, and competitors who share his dizzying journey — as she deftly explores the fragile structures that underlie love affairs and friendships, partnerships and families. An elegiac and uniquely American novel, Niagara Falls All Over Again is storytelling at its finest — and powerful proof that Elizabeth McCracken is one of the most dynamic and wholly original voices of her generation. From the Hardcover edition.

Publisher: Globe Pequot

About this book
Once a place sacred to the Iroquois, Niagara Falls has been exploited by profiteers, protected by preservationists, harnessed for mechanical power, and reincarnated into the honeymoon capital of the world. Niagara Falls: An Intimate Portrait, the companion to the PBS television program, celebrates the history of the falls and examines human progress - and human folly - on a grand scale. Fifteen million people are lured to Niagara each year by the sheer power and majesty of the water. You'll meet some of them: Maid of the Mist captains, wedding chapel ministers, honeymooners of all nationalities, light-show engineers, and thrill seeking daredevils. You'll also learn about the early explorers; the warriors who fought bloody battles for control of the falls; the first bridge builders and hydroelectric engineers; and the movie stars and tightrope walkers who attracted an awestruck public. Through color photographs and archival images, interviews  with people who work at the falls, and a detailed chronology of events, this book weaves together the contemporary and the historical to create an unforgettable, intimate portrait of Niagara Falls - a place entirely beyond the ordinary.

The City under the CN Tower...

The Canadian City of Toronto doesn't necessarily show up on a lot of must-see lists for Canada, and maybe that's unfortunate. Canada's biggest city has a lot on offer, from its location on the shores of Lake Ontario to its ethnically diverse neighborhoods to the iconic CN Tower to its restaurants and cultural offerings. Major professional sports? Toronto offers them all, even if hockey seems to get a disproportionate share of the attention. This compact and highly portable Fodor's Travel Guide to Toronto might be just the planning resource you need to see it all.The guide is well organized, with an introduction to Toronto, a tour of its neighborhoods, and advice on where to stay and what and where to eat. Toronto also has its own world-class culture and shopping. The side trips include Niagara Falls and Canada's own wine country. This guide has a sprinkling of color photographs, lots of maps and diagrams, and a subway guide at the back. Well recommended as a... 5/5 HMS Warspite (California) - See all my reviews, April 7, 2017

Informative book that helped me with my decision making before taking a trip to the area. Good information sprinkled with photos

I've never been to Toronto, but I'm thinking of places to visit in Canada as a first step toward my trip. This book did help me with my decision making. The first thing I looked for was a view of mountains and water. Plenty of water in Toronto, but it's a flatter view than Vancouver. This book includes Niagara Falls and the Niagara Wine Region. The next thing I looked for was transportation. It was mentioned in the text that you can make it without a car in most areas if you choose a hotel in walking distance to the attractions you want to see. Otherwise you will have to rent a car or get a taxi. Since I really don't like driving in a strange city, I prefer to get the very best-located hotel for whatever it is I'm in the mood to see.The list of hotels includes some that are very family friendly (lots of water slides and activities) and others (most) with casinos. The list of restaurants is really helpful to me, because you can't always... 4/5 Bold Consumer (USA) - See all my reviews, April 8, 2017
