Ocean City:

Creator: Nan DeVincent-Hayes, John E. Jacob | Travel - 1999-09-23

In this second volume of Ocean City, images of beach life from the late 1940s to the present day capture the spirit of this popular vacation spot.

Publisher: Arcadia Pub

About this book
Ocean City, Maryland's own seaside resort, has become so popular that it is almost too small--five square miles--to hold all its tourists. The last few decades have brought tremendous growth to the area in the form of both population and development. Bridges and tunnels have been built, high-rise hotels and condominiums have grown up, and amusements of all kinds have become available to the summertime crowds. In this second volume of Ocean City, images of beach life from the late 1940s to the present day capture the spirit of this popular vacation spot. From funnel cakes to Ferris wheels and deep-sea fishing to seasonal festivals, Ocean City, now a year-round retreat, has offered millions of visitors an endless variety of entertainment. Having survived destruction caused by storms, problems associated with the real estate boom, and the overwhelming surge of visitors who each summer crowd the boardwalk and Coastal Highway, this "small" town has matured over the last few decades into the jewel of Maryland's shore.

    Interesting

0 5/5 Kiki Fleishem (Denver) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ocean City, Vol. 1 (Images of America: Maryland) (Paperback) This is a worthwhile book. The history is well reserched, the photos are good, and the writing is smooth. Good deal. I loved the pictures. The book makes me want to visit Ocean City. It's sequel, Ocean City Vol. II, is equally good. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 20, 2005

0 4/5 Kasey Larson (St. Maartens) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ocean City, Vol. 1 (Images of America: Maryland) (Paperback) I'm not much for reading pictorial histories but this one got my attention. Ocean City Maryland is nicer than most resorts and has a good blend of commercialism to solitude, and wonderful activities, even at Christmas. It's a family resort, and my family and I like that. I thought this book was well written with finely tuned info and outstanding photos. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 10, 2000

    A Disappointment

I have been going to Ocean City all of my life. My parents owned a home in Ocean Pines, and I considered myself a "summer local" during my childhood and teens.I was hoping for a detailed look into the history of Ocean City through time, as well as details about key people and places. This book did not deliver. The author gives a general history of Ocean City starting with early explorers, but did not spend enough time on the details of its development or of key places/people. He skips around a lot, and often adds random, unimportant information, and also adds random information in chapters where it doesn't make sense to go. He includes a lot of unimportant people & places, while all but ignoring the important things such as the details of Trimper's Rides, the development of the boardwalk and pier, and the five-and-ten store, etc. There are no useful maps for the sake of reference, and yet he spends a lot of time explaining the locations of places... 1/5 kalm (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ocean City:: Going Down the Ocean (Paperback) I have been going to Ocean City all of my life. 0 5/5 Carolyn Webster (Tempe, AZ) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ocean City, Vol. 2 (Images of America: Maryland) (Paperback) This pictorial history by the authors Hayes and Jacob is very well done, and most enjoyable. I remember when

0 5/5 Kasey Larson (St. Maartens) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ocean City, Vol. 2 (Images of America: Maryland) (Paperback) I'm not old enough to remember everything written in Ocean City Volume I, but I do remember a lot of what is in this volume because it starts the historical period from the mid-1950s. I went to OC with my family when I was a kid and would go back in a heartbeat. Nicely done book: good writing, unique photos. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 13, 2005

    Reads like a first book

0 1/5 Amazon Customer (Delmar, MD USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ocean City M.D. (Paperback) A resident of Ocean City MD, I enjoyed the book's verisimilitude about the town, its geography and character, the moods of the bay, etc. -- mostly if not 100% accurate. Plus, you gotta like a protagonist, Billy Lee, among whose loves are flounder fishing, a beat up little Boston Whaler boat and a balky old outboard motor, and who lives in a scruffy trailer with spare posessions including his "favorite and only necktie." The yarn author Croft spins is imaginative and interesting and his language is economical and crisp and would normally have carried the tale along nicely. But the book suffers from awful editing. There are dozens and dozens of spelling, typographical, grammatical and usage errors and awkwardnesses, virtually one every few pages, sometimes several on one page. Examples: "Jeep's" for "Jeeps", "wastein" time for "wastin' time", wretch" for "retch", "aptly know has" for... OK yarn, engaging protagonist, but sloppy editing ruins it.
