Ocean City:

Creator: Nan DeVincent-Hayes, John E. Jacob | Travel - 1999-09-23

In this second volume of Ocean City, images of beach life from the late 1940s to the present day capture the spirit of this popular vacation spot.

Publisher: Arcadia Pub

About this book
Ocean City, Maryland's own seaside resort, has become so popular that it is almost too small--five square miles--to hold all its tourists. The last few decades have brought tremendous growth to the area in the form of both population and development. Bridges and tunnels have been built, high-rise hotels and condominiums have grown up, and amusements of all kinds have become available to the summertime crowds. In this second volume of Ocean City, images of beach life from the late 1940s to the present day capture the spirit of this popular vacation spot. From funnel cakes to Ferris wheels and deep-sea fishing to seasonal festivals, Ocean City, now a year-round retreat, has offered millions of visitors an endless variety of entertainment. Having survived destruction caused by storms, problems associated with the real estate boom, and the overwhelming surge of visitors who each summer crowd the boardwalk and Coastal Highway, this "small" town has matured over the last few decades into the jewel of Maryland's shore.

    Interesting

This is a worthwhile book. The history is well reserched, the photos are good, and the writing is smooth. Good deal. I loved the pictures. The book makes me want to visit Ocean City. It's sequel, Ocean City Vol. II, is equally good. 5/5 Kiki Fleishem (Denver) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ocean City, Vol. 1 (Images of America: Maryland) (Paperback) This is a worthwhile book. Images of America-Ocean City-Volume 1

This book addresses the eternal quest by Americans to learn their beginnings, to reflect on the past, and dream of good times when life was simple. I enjoyed the book even though I was born in the 60's. I look forward to volume II. 4/5 Kasey Larson (St. Maartens) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ocean City, Vol. 1 (Images of America: Maryland) (Paperback) I'm not much for reading pictorial histories but this one got my attention. Ocean City Maryland is nicer than most resorts and has a good blend of commercialism to solitude, and wonderful activities, even at Christmas. It's a family resort, and my family and I like that. I thought this book was well written with finely tuned info and outstanding photos. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 10, 2000

I loved this book! Michael Morgan has entertained and educated us all with articles of beach lore for over 20 years in the local papers. He is a genuine raconteur of history and foklore, heroes and villans, deeds and misdeeds all set along the Mid-Atlantic Coast. Our home-grown author is a dedicated researcher of beach history in Maryland and Delaware. Mr. Morgan serves up our historical (and hysterical) past and peppers it with the salty characters to be found along the barrier islands and all points inland along the coast. What a delicious read! 5/5 Donna Varette - See all my reviews, February 26, 2013

    A Disappointment

I have been going to Ocean City all of my life. My parents owned a home in Ocean Pines, and I considered myself a "summer local" during my childhood and teens.I was hoping for a detailed look into the history of Ocean City through time, as well as details about key people and places. This book did not deliver. The author gives a general history of Ocean City starting with early explorers, but did not spend enough time on the details of its development or of key places/people. He skips around a lot, and often adds random, unimportant information, and also adds random information in chapters where it doesn't make sense to go. He includes a lot of unimportant people & places, while all but ignoring the important things such as the details of Trimper's Rides, the development of the boardwalk and pier, and the five-and-ten store, etc. There are no useful maps for the sake of reference, and yet he spends a lot of time explaining the locations of places... 1/5 kalm (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ocean City: Going Down the Ocean (MD) (Paperback) I have been going to Ocean City all of my life. SO-SO TRUE CRIME STORY-TELLING

THE BAD: This is no "Forensic Files". Almost nothing about this show is original...many of the stories have been told on other True Crime shows. Sins & Secrets relies heavily on re-enactments and dramatizations which can make the story, no matter how interesting, seem trite and cut-rate.THE GOOD: The narrator is seasoned and serious. I like that he refrains from those cheesy puns you hear in "Nightmare Next Door" or "Who the &%$$# Did I Marry". 3/5 Jane B. - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great episode

This was agreat episode of Sins and Secrets. I've been in the military for almost 30 years, so I can relate to that community. My review is in no way skewed by the fact that my son played the Air Force Captain that was murdered. :) 5/5 Brad - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Enjoyable!

This pictorial history by the authors Hayes and Jacob is very well done, and most enjoyable. I reveled in the photos and the brief chapter introductions that tell a lot about the category being discussed. 5/5 Carolyn Webster (Tempe, AZ) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ocean City, Vol. 2 (Images of America: Maryland) (Paperback) This pictorial history by the authors Hayes and Jacob is very well done, and most enjoyable. I remember when

I'm not old enough to remember everything written in Ocean City Volume I, but I do remember a lot of what is in this volume because it starts the historical period from the mid-1950s. I went to OC with my family when I was a kid and would go back in a heartbeat. Nicely done book: good writing, unique photos. 5/5 Kasey Larson (St. Maartens) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ocean City, Vol. 2 (Images of America: Maryland) (Paperback) I'm not old enough to remember everything written in Ocean City Volume I, but I do remember a lot of what is in this volume because it starts the historical period from the mid-1950s.
