Ocean City:

Creator: Nan DeVincent-Hayes, John E. Jacob | Travel - 1999-09-23

In this second volume of Ocean City, images of beach life from the late 1940s to the present day capture the spirit of this popular vacation spot.

Publisher: Arcadia Pub

About this book
Ocean City, Maryland's own seaside resort, has become so popular that it is almost too small--five square miles--to hold all its tourists. The last few decades have brought tremendous growth to the area in the form of both population and development. Bridges and tunnels have been built, high-rise hotels and condominiums have grown up, and amusements of all kinds have become available to the summertime crowds. In this second volume of Ocean City, images of beach life from the late 1940s to the present day capture the spirit of this popular vacation spot. From funnel cakes to Ferris wheels and deep-sea fishing to seasonal festivals, Ocean City, now a year-round retreat, has offered millions of visitors an endless variety of entertainment. Having survived destruction caused by storms, problems associated with the real estate boom, and the overwhelming surge of visitors who each summer crowd the boardwalk and Coastal Highway, this "small" town has matured over the last few decades into the jewel of Maryland's shore.

    A Disappointment

I have been going to Ocean City all of my life. My parents owned a home in Ocean Pines, and I considered myself a "summer local" during my childhood and teens.I was hoping for a detailed look into the history of Ocean City through time, as well as details about key people and places. This book did not deliver. The author gives a general history of Ocean City starting with early explorers, but did not spend enough time on the details of its development or of key places/people. He skips around a lot, and often adds random, unimportant information, and also adds random information in chapters where it doesn't make sense to go. He includes a lot of unimportant people & places, while all but ignoring the important things such as the details of Trimper's Rides, the development of the boardwalk and pier, and the five-and-ten store, etc. There are no useful maps for the sake of reference, and yet he spends a lot of time explaining the locations of places... 1/5 kalm (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ocean City: Going Down the Ocean (MD) (Paperback) I have been going to Ocean City all of my life. Great episode

0 5/5 Brad - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Sins & Secrets Season 2 (Amazon Instant Video) This was agreat episode of Sins and Secrets. I've been in the military for almost 30 years, so I can relate to that community. My review is in no way skewed by the fact that my son played the Air Force Captain that was murdered. :) 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 20, 2012

One of the BEST that my MONEY can GET in terms True Crime Shows. SUSPENSE + SHOCK + TWISTS

0 5/5 Cestmoi - See all my reviews This review is from: Sins & Secrets Season 2 (Amazon Instant Video) This is one of the BEST that my MONEY can GET in terms of true crime shows. Most of the episodes are suspenseful, shocking and full of twists. What makes them stand out is each episode depicts a homicide taking place in a different location in America. It gives me an impression that crime can happen anywhere in the US. In fact, it does."Ocean City" depicts shockingly brutal crimes. I could never guess who the killers were because outwardly, they were both successfully business owners."Mio" unfolds like a Hollywood movie where the bad guys scare a small town into silence. Some people who dared to talk to police about the missing of 2 out-of-town hunters ended up dead. I was amazed by the determination of the detective who at last revealed the identity of the killers 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 12, 2014

    Dermatologist reccomended, Princess approved

0 5/5 Princess Stephanie "Steph" (Arizona) - See all my reviews My dermatologist recommended this stuff. She says that true sun blocks contain zinc-oxide or "z-cote". I have a skin condition called melasma that is aggravated by sun exposure. I especially have to protect my face. This is the only sun screen that doesn't feel oily and does sting when I put it on. I think you get a lot for the price. I will continue to buy this stuff as long as they make it. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , April 23, 2008

    Very good sunscreen

0 4/5 Tke490 - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) My wife and I both like this sunscreen - so far it is the best we have found, but it is still not perfect as it is a bit greasy. That being said, it is MUCH less greasy than most other sunscreens. My only concern is the nanoparticles used in this sunscreen (and others). Since there are no long-term safety studies performed on nanoparticles, we are a bit concerned that the nanoparticles will be absorbed through our skin and accumulate in our organs (as the studies suggest they do) and cause problems later on. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 30, 2010

    Great for Dry Skin!

Elta MD UV Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 45 - 7 oz.: The label on this sunscreen says it is for "Oily to Normal Skin." Thanks to a review by Paul Begoun (Beautypedia, Cosmetics Cop, Paula's Choice) in which she states that it is better for dry skin than oily skin - I gave it a try. I absolutely love it for my slightly dry skin. It is moisturizing, light, fragrance-free and gives a slightly dewy look, but not shiny - and I don't feel the need to put any powder over it. I see this working for Normal to Dry Skin. I don't see it working for Oily Skin.I was using the Elta MD Clear SPF 46 on my face before trying this one. I would compare the two in this way: The "Clear" is far more expensive, feels a bit heavier on the skin with a very slight tackiness to it, is more drying and even though both are fragrance-free, the "Clear" has a bit more of an odor to it. The "Clear" is a great product, and would be especially good for oily skin I think,... 5/5 KJRGFND - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
