How I Didn't Get Killed At E3 [Column]

  • Jun 29, 2010 from kotaku(Kotaku) in Gaming
kotaku How did I get to E3? How did I get a VIP pass? I don't even know. The idea was that I would walk up to E3 and, telling nobody anything, manage to just get in. That's what happened.
    It worked out pretty well.
I have business in the San Francisco Bay Area from late June to early August, so I figured I would fly in from Tokyo a week early, and check out E3. At the time, I didn't think it was a stupid idea to fly in to San Francisco International Airport, despite the Electronic Entertainment Expo being in Los Angeles. When I booked my ticket, I was only thinking that it would cost a lot more money to fly into Los Angeles from Tokyo and then fly back from San Francisco. I was hardly thinking that the entire goal of my trip to the United States was to make money so much money that a little bit here or there to upgrade my traveling comfort would be irrelevant in the Grand Scheme of Things. Halfway through the flight, I remembered the story of Miyamoto Musashi's duel with Sasaki Kojiro: Musashi said that Kojiro had lost the duel in the very first instant, when he cast his scabbard into the ocean.
    Monday
Well, at least, flying into San Francisco meant I would get to enjoy something I seldom enjoy: a nice long drive in a genuinely scenic part of the world. The road from San Francisco to Los Angeles, whichever highway you choose, offers much more fantastic scenery in five hours than you're bound to experience locked up in your room staring at a computer screen for six weeks. I arrived at the airport, suffered through a long ordeal at immigration why they leave only six booths of eighteen open when there are clearly a thousand passengers waiting is beyond me and waited outside in the cool northern California breeze for twenty minutes before Bob's Chrysler Sebring ("When You Need a Convertible right now") slid up into a perfectly parallel-parked position. It was around that instant that I realized two attractive ladies were whispering about me over by an ashtray: Aha, it's because I am wearing a super-fly Adidas Originals track suit in the Japan-exclusive color of psycho-crayon-green. In front of me, a luggage cart, containing an enormous suitcase, my laptop bag, and a cardboard box full of computer. In my right hand, an Adidas Originals shopping bag containing an Adidas Originals track suit in the Japan-exclusive color of shiny piano black.
I'd heard someone say, a long time ago, that if you want people to remember you, you have to wear the same thing every day. That's why people remember, say, Mickey Mouse, or Super Mario. I've earned something of an . . . existing reputation as the guy with a Swedish schoolgirl haircut and ridiculous cartoon character glasses with twenty-four-karat gold studs in them. It was time to complete the look. I wasn't sure if green was the right color, though it was the gaudiest, weirdest color that the Shinjuku Adidas Originals store had this season, so I rolled with it.

Despite my engorged interest in the National Basketball Association, it wasn't until I'd landed in San Francisco and picked up a discarded copy of the New York Times that it dawned on me: The Los Angeles Lakers were facing the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals in Los Angeles. At the Staples Center. Next door to the Los Angeles Convention Center. Where the Electronic Entertainment Expo was held. Crayon-green was the Boston Celtics' primary color. Oh man. This situation was bound to get gorgeous real quick.
Days later, following the Lakers' victory, minutes after a man threw a lit cigarette into the open Sebring, burning a hole halfway into the nylon of my track pants right up above the knee, moments before a dozen rioters grabbed our car and tried maybe-seriously to tip it over, our car drifted to a stop in front of Cheapassgamer.com's own Cheapy D and Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, who took one look at my pants, told me I'd better take them off, and warned me, "You're gonna get fuckin' stabbed."
I didn't get fuckin' stabbed, though the possibility of it occurred to me in that breezeway as Bob popped the trunk on Monday morning. We stuffed my stuff into the car; I took the shopping bag into the front seat.
"We need to maximize our visibility," I told Bob. "In a couple years, we're going to have enough money to rent a booth. We need to think about that. This year, we don't have a booth this year, we are a walking, talking booth."
    "Okay."
Maybe Bob was tired. We pulled off the highway and into the first shopping center outside the airport. Lo and behold: a Chipotle.

The sun was terrifying. Just to fight a migraine, I had to squint so hard that I could barely see. I had to squint so hard I could have looked right at an eclipse. I grimaced in a Walgreens parking lot while Bob went in to get cash and cigarettes. Hands on my hips. I unzipped my jacket, and there I was in a Russian Tuxedo: track suit and tank-top. A couple of college girls looked at me. It struck me, instantly, that I was probably a huge joke to...

Review: Everki Track Laptop Messenger Bag

  • Sep 23, 2010 from geardiary(Judie Lipsett Stanford) in Technology
geardiary For some time I have been using a backpack as my gear bag. I like the backpack because it provides tons of room and lets me hold onto my college youth of backpacking around campus. My main backpack has been the Everki Beacon laptop that I reviewed here. I loved the quality and features of the Beacon so when I had a chance to review two new Everki bags I jumped at the chance. I was actually ready for a change to a messenger style bag to bring a bit of professional style to my daily gear travels. The Track messenger bag is perfect to use as an everyday laptop bag or even a general use bag for those who do not carry a computer. As with all of Everkis products, the Track contains many intuitive features that help set it apart and make it more usable than other similar messengers. Lets take a look.
    Features:

    Accommodates up to 15.6 laptops
Padded ultra-soft computer nest to guard against bumps
    Soft fine-felt lined iPad/Kindle/tablet pocket
    Extra-padded, ergonomic, non-slip shoulder pad
    Two-way adjustable shoulder strap
    Trolley handle pass-through pocket
High contrast lining makes items easy to find
    Self-healing zippers
Backed by Everkis Limited Lifetime Warranty and world-class customer service

The Track looks similar to the average messenger bag. The front flap closes just like any other bag but it also uses a strip of velcro to stay in place. The inside of the flap has a one piece strip of velcro that attaches to two separate strips on the bag itself. This insures a perfect fit each time not requiring the user to line up separate velcro strips. For added security, the bag can be locked closed using two unique Everki buckles. I have used these buckles in other products and have come to appreciate their design and function. The buckle is designed to slide into a small loop at the bottom. Once the buckle slides in and snaps into place, they are virtually locked and will not open on their own. All of your gear will remain safe and secure.

For carrying, the Track sports a large padded, non-slip shoulder strap that allows for dual adjustments. Once adjusted to the user perfectly, the padded strap will contour to the shoulder dispersing the weight and making the bag easier to carry. Trust me, you will see how much stuff I carry in mine and this feature is a must. On the back of the bag is a low profile handle. I refuse to use a bag without a handle and was worried when I fist opened the box that the Track was without one. The clever design of the handle is placed at location that is out of the way, but also maximizes weight distribution. The handle is low profile and is virtually not seen when not in use.

A unique and thoughtful feature is located on the back side of the bag. A small pocket is available that will velcro shut to carry file folders or important papers. The unique feature of the pocket is the fact that it can double as a trolley strap for rolling luggage. The bottom of the pocket is a zipper and when open can allow the bag to be set onto the handle of a rolling suitcase making traveling much easier and more convenient. These types of features are what I love about Everki products.

Just under the flap is a large pocket. This is where I keep my pens, pencils and high lighters. The outside of this pocket also contains more storage areas. On the right side is a 4 inch by 6 inch pocket which is held closed by a velcro flap. I am storing various items in this pocket including some flash drives, an iPhone battery charger and a couple of USB cables. To the left are some layered pockets for storing business cards and various flat items. I currently have not been using these pockets for anything since I mostly go paperless now and days.

The inside of the bag is quite spacious. The laptop pocket is well padded and can hold up to a 15.6 inch laptop. I currently carry my 13 inch MacBook Pro with no problems. The Inside of the compartment is a soft orange fleece material that will also help protect your device. The added padding is important when carrying a computer all day. My favorite feature of the Track is the addition of an iPad sleeve connected to the laptop compartment. Now, I have a perfectly sized spot to carry my iPad with me anytime I want. Genius idea! To add to security, a strap is available to tighten down both the laptop and the iPad. The strap works flawlessly and is quick and easy to open and close. Next to the iPad sleeve is another smaller sleeve that can be used for carrying a wireless mouse. I no longer use a mouse, so I carry my external hard drive in this pocket. Again, these added pockets keep extra devices safe and out of the way during transport.

The remainder of the bag still provides some room to carry everyday items. I am carrying some bluetooth headphones, a laptop speaker bar and various cords and cables. A zippered side pouch can be used to carry any extra items including power supplies and odds and ends. I have this pouch packed full of USB drives, more cords and a WiFi travel...

Not sturdy enough for airline travel. Fell apart on first trip.

It turns out that this tag is not very sturdy. It didn't even make it intact to our very first destination airport.
