About this book
A native of the Northwest, Douglas Lorain spends more than 150 days each year hiking Oregon's trails. The author of several outdoor guidebooks to the region, Lorain's scenic photographs have been published in numerous magazines, calendars, and books. Not one to be deterred from the great outdoors, in his lifetime Lorain has hiked more than 32,000 miles, and has been charged by a grizzly bear, bitten by a rattlesnake, and shot at by a hunter while on the trail. He lives in Portland, OR. What makes a trail a classic hike? Outstanding scenery, says Doug Lorain, especially good views. Add in mountain lakes and waterfalls. Sprinkle with wildflowers, old-growth forests, wildlife sightings, and interesting geologic features. All of the hikes Lorain has selected boast at least two of these attributes, and often more. These are simply the best hikes the state of Oregon has to offer. Lorain should know; he's logged more than 16,000 Oregon hiking miles in his boots. In the 2nd edition of 100 Classic Hikes: Oregon Lorain presents a mix of the most popular trails and lesser-known gems throughout the entire state, including 9 brand new hikes. Trailheads are easily accessible; trails are well established. They range from short, easy strolls suitable for children and grandparents to longer backpacking trips for experienced hikers.

0 5/5 C4NON M4N (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Eagle Creek Travel Gear Universal Traveler Backpack RFID (Sports) Seems a little cheaper than my previous eagle creek gear. I think Velcro was used a little too liberally. The Velcro on the inside front pocket is quite annoying as it sticks to the inside lining. In terms of durability, It seems like it will hold up. I have high expectations for eagle creek, so it might take a few years to test the durability. I have taken it on two international journeys so far. I lived in India for two months and I commuted to work everyday with this back pack. It is the perfect size back pack in that it is small enough for daily activities, but it is also big enough to pack with all my electronic gear for longer journeys.Durability is the main reason I bought eagle creek. My last backpack lasted through 8 years of everyday use. This backpack's construction is lighter weight than my previous backpack, so we will see if it holds up. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 30, 2014

A travel backpack, not a business case strapped to your back.

A very good, roomy pack. I looked only at packs that fit over my rolling luggage when I didn't want it on my back. Victorinox Big Ben, Briggs Clamshell, and Hartman all make an excellent product, but they were stiff and, although well suited for business needs, were too compartmentalized, possess a high profile and are too rigid for my travel needs. Tumi backpacks, also excellent, were either too small or too segmented. I wanted something with a large central pocket, soft so that it looked less imposing when walking around, with with some organizational features like a key chain, small pockets for electonics and penholders. I also wanted something that looked good in the city, but would handle a hike. This backpack is well made, well designed, and opens for TSA inspection of a laptop without removal. I don't carry a laptop, but overseas, even an IPad is inspected. The price is $150-300 less then the other packs. The only negatives are 1) the anterior organizing pocket extends... 4/5 J. Tiny backpack

0 4/5 Bright Star (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Eagle Creek Travel Bug Mini Backpack RFID (Sports) Before making this purchase you must be fully aware that this is a really small backpack, and the straps are not padded. If you try to fit in an iPad like others did, you will find this backpack becomes increasingly uncomfortable. I use this with other crossbody bag interchangeably when traveling. I don't want to carry a lot (or force myself to stop carrying all the junk with me) so this fits the bill. I like the safety features, but cannot figure out why EG decided to keep the loop hole on the side when there's really no need for it like in the previous versions. Overall this bag is good for carrying a could of small items and not for holding a lot.Although happy with my purchase, I took one star off for the price. At $70 it is certainly over priced. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 25, 2014

Eagle Creek . . . usually excellent, but disappoints here.

0 2/5 Orion (Garden City, NY USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Eagle Creek Travel Bug Mini Backpack RFID (Sports) I returned this. Eagle Creek products are among my favorites, but this bag has a few unacceptable flaws. For one thing, the unpadded shoulder straps were regularly slipping off my shoulders. For another, the curved outside zipper made it nearly impossible to reach inside its compartment to access the pocket inside. And the price is excessive. I wasn't troubled by the small size -- it is what I was seeking. But ultimately, I went with a Dakine model for $27 and it functions better than this one. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 9, 2014

This pack is deceptively large (see pics with the CD case for perspective). I was able to fit a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, cargo shorts, underwear, a packable windbreaker, a pair of hiking shoes (size 15!!!), sunscreen, boonie hat, baseball cap, glasses case, passport, iPhone, charger, socks...basically everything I needed for a day PLUS contingencies (sans towels). It's super light, and even though I CRAMMED it totally full, the zippers were never an issue. It packs down to about the size of 4 CD's, and when full, it's not much smaller than a standard backpack. The incredibly lightweight material feels pretty strong for normal wear and tear, and it's relatively water resistant. We went sailing and it stayed with me the whole time and nothing inside got wet, despite constant spray from the waves. Would it protect a camera in a rain storm? No, definitely not, but it'll keep your clothes dry enough in a sprinkle. I could do without the design on the pack circa 1993, so I chose... 5/5 Ray Finkle - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) 0 5/5 LindsayNK9 - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: #1 Rated 20L/33L- Most Durable Packable Handy Lightweight Travel Backpack Daypack+Lifetime Warranty (Sports) I needed a packable, waterproof backpack for my trip to Brazil and this was perfect! I wore it while hiking through the jungle in Iguassu Falls, where weather was unpredictable, and it kept all my belongings dry. At one point, I was able to fit a change of clothes, sunscreen, towel, and a bunch of other items. I liked the smaller pockets for items that needed to be easily accessible. The price point is great and it didn't take up any room in my luggage. I also used it later in my trip as an extra bag for souvenirs! Definitely recommend! 0, January 4, 2015

I bought this bag for 3 purposes: 1 - daily carry as a laptop briefcase messenger bag. 2 - weekend airline travel as a backpack. 3 - as a long-drive travel bag so I don't have to haul a suitcase into hotels while driving to my final destination. This bag has every feature I wanted, including tsa-friendly clamshell laptop compartment and rolling luggage handle pass through, plus the bag looks great for daily brief use. A Most Excellent Bag for Frequent Travelers/Fliers

For my (early) birthday, my girlfriend gave me the Eagle Creek Convertabrief. I travel a lot and usually carry a large should-slung leather bag. Possibly the best bag ever.

I love this bag so much!! I am kind of a bag-a-holic and this is my current favorite. I was planning for months to but the Timbuck2 command or commute messenger bags but when I saw this those were quickly brushed aside. This bag has not only style but incredible versatility. It has an incredible build quality and when empty is quite thin but expands to be able to hold an incredible amount of what ever you put in it. It's not in any of the descriptions I have read or when I was doing research online but the main compartment of this bag actually has an internal frame around the entire bag making it not only very sturdy and protecting the contents but also makes it look good when you carry/wear it since the bag never bulges outward just because a heavy object might be inside. This also adds extra protection for any electronics that might be inside. Eagle creek is my new favorite brand because it seems like each of their bags are designed for multiple uses which I love. This bag meets the specific need of those looking for a carry-on size bag that had the option to be worn as a backpack. This bag is well-built out of a heavy duty rubberized material and has an overall quality fit and finish. The main zipper is heavy duty and all zippers have nice malleable pulls that appear durable and all zippers run smoothly. When I first received this bag I didn’t understand the “backwards” design of putting the straps near the main and outer compartment opening and wanted to try a more traditional back-pack set up with the straps on the opposite side of the zippers so I also purchased the Osprey Farpoint 40 (size small, 38 liters) and the Osprey Porter 46 to compare. The quality of the Ospreys is as good as the Eagle Creek but I think the design of the Eagle Creek is ideal for the carry-on role. To test each bag I loaded a 13 inch macbook pro, a fleece sweater and 4 packing cubes consisting of: 8 pairs of underwear, 9 shirts, 2 pants and 1 pair... 5/5 S. Exactly what I was looking for!

Did ton's of searching and research. This bag turned out to be exactly what I was looking for!I travel to NYC weekly for a overnight on the train (from Philadelphia) and I needed a overnight bag I could fit my next days clothes, computer and accessories as well as my running shoes and gear (love running on the west side)...It also needed to be train and subway friendly! It is plenty big enough and I can probably fit another day of running gear and clothes if I needed to.I was worried about it being "backwards". Would those straps dig into my back? Well for me... I can't really tell! They are pretty soft.I really like the idea of it thou and took the chance because I like not needed to worry about where I put it down because the back is the "bottom" and the top (or part that touches my back) stay's clean. I also don't worry about wearing it in crowds because their are no pockets on the back (bottom) for others to "search"... 5/5 Donald L. So glad I bought this

This is made really well. I bought this for dual use (Airline and Motorcycle). First, I wanted a back-pack style carry-on for airline travel. It is a perfect size. It starts off only slightly larger than a traditional back-pack, but grows/expands as you put more stuff in it. Plenty of space for 3 or 4 days worth of clothes, etc. Easy to carry through the airport and fits nicely in the overhead compartment. The reverse strap confused me looking at the pictures, but it is a really nice idea and functions really well. The vinyl-like bottom is a great idea too. I was thinking it would be good for being on the bike in the rain, then I spilled my coffee on it in the airport. I was grateful for this surface, the coffee wiped right off of it. The zippers, straps, etc. are made really well and i'm sure it will last for years. As far as the motorcycle, I have a touring bike with a luggage rack on top of the tour pack. This pack is an exact fit for the rack and the straps on the pack easily... 5/5 Greg Madama - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
