How to Travel 12 Countries with No Baggage Whatsoever (+ Cool Giveaway)

  • Aug 21, 2010 from timferriss in Lifestyle
timferriss Starting tomorrow, travel writer Rolf Potts will embark on a trip that will take him around the world without using a single piece of luggage. This post will explain how hes going to do it, and theres a kick-ass giveaway at the end
For six weeks he will explore 12 countries on five continents, crossing the equator four times, without carrying so much as a man-purse. The few items he does bring will be tucked away in his pockets. Though hes a seasoned minimalist traveler (famous from his book Vagabonding), he usually travels with a single overhead-bin-perfect backpack, the Eagle Creek Thrive 65L. Its been his go-to bag for the last 3-4 years.
So why attempt to travel the world with no luggage at all?
Rolf sees his journey as a real-time experiment in traveling ultra-light, and a field-test for a more philosophical idea that what we experience in life is more important than what we bring with us.
While circumnavigating the globe with no luggage sounds like a clear enough proposition, it can raise a few semantic issues. What, for example, counts as a bag? Rolf has set up a set of ground rules to guide his own journey, including:
    - No bags on the journey (not even a man-purse or grocery store bag, unless the latter is used en route to a meal).
    - No borrowing items from his cameraman or using his cameraman as a pack mule.
    - Borrowing or buying items along the way is permitted but excludes bags.
Since most people dont travel with a film crew, Rolfs advice for the average no-baggage traveler is a bit broader than the rules hes set for himself. Here are 8 key tips from Rolf on how to plan and execute a no-luggage journey.
    In Rolfs words
    1) Manage the journey from your mobile phone.
A smartphone could well be the most important tool for a baggage-less traveler. It can store your boarding passes and other important documents, make phone calls from virtually anywhere in the world (with a swappable SIM card) and even act as a miniature blogging tool.
I recommend an iPhone with a foldable Bluetooth keyboard, which allows you to fit your mobile office inside a single jacket pocket. The iPhone can be loaded with a series of applications to replace everyday day items carried on a normal trip. The Kindle app lets you leave behind bulky books, and Genius Scan lets you use you iPhones camera as a makeshift scanner so you can quickly save receipts and email them to yourself on the fly. Wikihood utilizes the phones GPS to serve location-relevant Wikipedia articles, which is a unique and interesting alternative to a guidebook. Throw in your favorite currency converter, phrase book, and flight tracker, and youve got a single device in your pocket more powerful than its dead-weight paper counterparts.
    Some recommedations:
    TripTracker by PageOnce
Lonely Planet series of phrase books (multiple links depending on language)

    _blank">Currency converter: Currency
    2) Keep your footwear simple and practical.
With no bags, the only shoes youre going to want to bring is whatever youre wearing from day to day.
Im traveling with a pair of Blundstone boots I bought in Australia in 2006. Ive worn these boots all over the world the past four years, from Paris to Ethiopia to the Falkland Islands, and theyve served me great. They work for hiking in remote environments, yet theyre easy to slip off and on at airport security.
Some travelers might prefer Chaco or Teva sandals (if nothing else to save packing socks) and I wont fault them for that but my Blundstones look nice enough that they will get me into places where sandals might seem too informal. You are on your feet constantly when you travel, of course, so whichever footwear you choose to bring (be it sandals or boots or running shoes), make sure you aim for comfort, simplicity, and durability.
(Note from Tim: I opt for darker-colored Keen Newport Bison Leather Sandals. If you use black or dark socks, since they have closed toes, you can easily get into restaurants or even pass for business casual if you tuck the tightening strings in.)
    3) Buy or borrow certain items as you go.
An old vagabonding adage goes, Pack twice the money and half the gear.
The same notion applies to no-luggage travel even if youre only packing a tenth of the gear. If a journey takes you to a beautiful beach region, odds are you can buy rubber flip-flop sandals there for a few dollars. If a given city is rainy, cheap umbrellas should be in plentiful supply and if you get sick, the world is full of pharmacies (many of which are better-suited to cure local ailments that whatever medicine you might have packed).
Should you travel your way into cold weather, thrift stores are a good place to buy a warm jacket (which can be given way to a needy person or left in a hostel swap-box when you leave). You can also borrow things from other travelers along the way. You dont want to be obnoxious about this, of course, but most travelers dont mind sharing a spot of toothpaste or a couple of aspirin, and...

    Solid, well-built luggage

I bought this set for a recent trip, and was pleased with how well it was constructed. It even had a nice interior cover that can be zipped over your clothes and includes a sort of compression strap system that was helpful in getting everything packed in there. The collapsible handle is sturdy and locks in place to prevent damage by overly enthusiastic baggage handlers. It also has convenient carry handles on the top and bottom to aid in retrieving the bag from an overhead bin. The smaller bag was perfect as a carry-on. I used it to hold my books, iPod, etc.Just be aware that if you take advantage of the expansion panel feature on the bag it may not fit in an airline overhead compartment. I had to check the larger bag on the way back because I had opened up the expansion panels and stuffed it full.I definitely recommend this luggage. 5/5 D. Excellent item and perfect price!

We needed carry on for a trip out of the country and this suitcase and bag worked perfectly. Quality made and very reasonably priced compared to others we saw. Would recommend to anyone taking a trip for a few days and only need carry on vs trying to check baggage! 5/5 C. Great Value

For the price I really can't complain, suitcase appears to be of a good quality and I was pleased with it's performance this past weekend. A few things to be aware of... Expanded this suitcase is still carry-on size. For a 4 day trip I had to expand to fit everything (this included my lap top) and I was unable to include any extra's such as gym shoes. If you are looking for something that is a carry on in one configuration and then can expand for some extra space and be checked, this is not the bag for you. The 2nd bag is as small as it looks in the pictures. I'm really not sure what use I will have for it. I love the mustard color, just nice to have something different but after one trip it is show scuffs. Overall this bag fit the bill, I needed something last minuet and cheep and I did not have time to shop. In the long term I don't know as it has the versatility that I would like n a suit case this size. 3/5 G. M. Schaefer (Phoenix, AZ) - See all my reviews, March 15, 2011

    Don't fly without it.

Flying has become a nightmare lately, especially internationally. All carriers have various luggage size and weight restrictions, and as overweight surcharges have become another source of revenue for airlines many carriers have started enforcing them rigorously. There's nothing worse than getting to the airport and being told that the suitcase it took you hours to squeeze shut is just two lbs too heavy, and you have the choice to either leave something behind or pay a surcharge.Of course, you always have the option to use your bathroom scale to weigh your luggage; it's cumbersome, and unless you have one of those fancy scales with a remote screen, by the time the suitcase is on the scale you can't see the dial. Besides, you're still left with the problem of finding a scale at your destination to get ready for the flight back.Enter the tiny, 5oz Taylor #8120 Digital Luggage Scale. It's basically a handle with a strap and a small LCD readout. Attach the... 5/5 esanta "esanta" (San Jose, CA USA) - See all my reviews, December 7, 2008

Very Accurate and Easy to Pack

I am very impressed by the accuracy of this scale. I tested it by lifting various known weights (dumbbells) and found that it was usually dead-on accurate, or at worst, a few ounces off. The accuracy improves with the smoothness of the lift, so you want to try to lift straight up without allowing the bag to shift as you lift. Even if the bag dose shift around a bit, the scale will most likely be well within a half a pound of the actual weight. 5/5 James (San Diego, US, Canada) - See all my reviews, January 11, 2009

Taylor Digital Scale - Works Well, But Not For Heavy Luggage

The is definitely useful and a good bargain considering the price. I don't think this works for all travelers because it simply does not feel durable enough to be used with luggage towards the top end of the 40 kg weight rating. But for those who take frequent trips with overnight bags, this will probably do the trick at a reasonable price.PROS:+ Great price for a luggage scale+ Digital read-out+ Can display weight in pounds or kilograms+ Nice simple design that is small enough to take to the airport with youCONS:- Contruction seems to be of low durability- Not well designed for use with heavier bags- Not designed for two-handed useThis unit comes in a small cardboard box. Super Lock

This is the best lock out there in my experience. We had 2 bags that were checked in at the Johannesburg airport. Someone tried to get into both bags. They easily broke one of our brand new locks which was a different model. We found that other lock inside its ravaged suitcase (and many items were stolen from that bag). By contrast, this particular Master Lock had numerous cut marks on it, but it held up well and did not break. This model of Master Lock combines a metal shell and heavily twisted wires in a way that makes it withstand assaults very well. 5/5 Ann - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Very Insecure - Opens in seconds without a tool

This lock can be opened in seconds by anyone without a tool. Find some good light and take a look in the crack above the numbers. Spin the dial until you see a notch on the silver bar in the crack. Line each one up with the dots and there you go. I don't expect a lock like this to be extremely good, but this is just ridiculous. Unfortunately I leave on a very long trip tomorrow and don't have time to find something different. 1/5 Marcus "Me" - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great price and worked on a trip to Italy thru several TSA checkpoints

Great price thru Amazon. We used a few of these on a recent trip. I don't know if the TSA guys used their master key to unlock them but they came thru trouble free. It's an attractive lock and the flexibility of the little cable makes it great for gym bag locks where you have to snake thru a variety of locker setups. 5/5 D. Make sure you stay within the airline's baggage allowance!

This is one of those things I didn't think I'd use much, but am glad I bought. As a private pilot, I was initially interested in it because it makes weighing bags for doing weight and balance calculations easier. Then, packing SCUBA gear for a trip to Belize, I wanted to make sure I was within the airline's 50lb baggage weight limit. It works well, has a large, clear LCD readout, stores somewhat compactly due to the folding handle, and holds the display so you can see how much your bag weighs *after* you put it down. Here's the process (for weighing in pounds): 1) Affix the strap to your bag's handle using the web strap with the Fastex buckle, 2) turn it on with the power button, then press the units button to switch from Kg to Lb, 3) lift up using the steel handle and wait for the beep that tells you the bag's weight is locked on the display. Press Reset to start over. Works for me! 5/5 Mark R. (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Broken after two uses

I purchased this in May and upon the second use, it would not turn on. Thinking it might just be the inexpensive batteries, I figured I would repace and it would be fine. The spring that holds the connection on one battery had broken off and once I moved the battery that was in the scale, it was all over.I tried to contact Amazon customer service, but had a very difficult time communicating with the foreign broken English.Giving up, I contacting the manufacturer and it proved to be better and it is under warrenty.
