jerryjamesstone You might want to start stockpiling your favorite vintages, for the engineers over at Lotus have created a vino-powered car! The 270 horsepower car, called the Exige 270E Tri-fuel, does 0-60 mph in just under four seconds and tops out around 158 mph; it’s one of the fastest road legal vehicles in the world. It’s 4-cylinder, 1.8 liter engine is fully sealed and requires absolutely no engine oil. Modeled after the Exige S, the prototype is part of Lotus’ initiative to address the environmental challenges currently facing the automotive industry.

Virtual Pushpins On A Geeks Map

  • Jul 07, 2010 from fitzwillie(GeekDad)
fitzwillie A huge part of the quintessential cross-country road trip is, of course, the stuff you see along the way.
So when I took to the highway for a couple weeks this summer, Ohio-to-Southern California-and-back, I made sure to note a few Locations of Geek Interest on my 5,400-mile drive.
This one I found by pure chance when I made a pit stop in Shamrock, Texas, just off I-40:
    Image: John Booth
In real life, its the Tower Conoco station, but everybody I showed that picture to immediately recognized it as Ramones House of Body Art from Pixars Cars. Not something youre likely to go out of your way to see, of course, but if youre crossing the Texas panhandle and you need to take a break, its an awfully nifty sight, and its right there amidst the places youre probably visiting for meals or bathroom stops anyway.
The next geek stop, in contrast to that surprise find, I had figuratively thumbtacked as soon as I saw where my route would lead me. Welcome, my old-school Star Wars friends, to Tatooine:
    Image: John Booth
Specifically, its the dunes off the Interstate 8 Grays Well exit west of Yuma, Arizona, where the Return of the Jedi Sarlacc Pit scenes were filmed. I looked up the location and was thrilled to discover how easy it is to find. Again, not a place youre likely to linger, but if you happen to be on the road from Phoenix to San Diego and youve got Force-fed fans aboard, taking a few minutes to imagine Krayt dragon skeletons and Jawa sandcrawlers on the horizon could certainly make for some interesting where I went on my summer vacation chatter.
(And yes, I did cart a vintage Dewback toy across the country just for the chance to shoot this counterpart to Februarys vintage Chewbacca snow gauge. And yes, I know Dewbacks werent actually seen in Jedi. Im still happy with the way the picture came out.)
Upon reaching the West Coast, some friends in Los Angeles treated me to an afternoon of nerdery which included a trip to Frank and Sons, where I saw kids and their parents equally agog over crazy displays of all sorts of geek toys and collectibles old and new. Under-twelves popped their eyes at Bakugan and Clone Wars stuff while moms and dads eyes sparked over vintage Tron and Trek and Battle of the Planets and Battlestar Galactica. I even found a cheap Imperious Leader from that last line a figure I owned begrudgingly as a kid, settling for it only because Kmart had no new Star Wars guys, but which had since earned its own sentimental value as a result.
My wife and daughter met me in San Diego a few days later, and we enjoyed visits to both Balboa Park and La Jolla Cove.
We only wandered the gardens at Balboa for a couple hours, since it was late afternoon when we got there, and we were bowled over by how much fun we had just exploring places like the Palm Canyon and the Alcazar Garden and the Lily Pond. And for families, the price of the self-guided walk free couldnt be more right. Given more time in San Diego, we easily could have returned for a couple more days and checked out places like the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, the San Diego Air & Space Museum, or the San Diego Natural History Museum, all of which are within Balboa Park. This place was such a great surprise that I got up early one morning and made the 10-minute drive there just to go for a run.
    Image: John Booth
La Jolla Cove made for another unexpectedly awesome morning trip, and though its obviously a big tourist resort destination, we spent our whole time there enthralled by the shore and the wildlife. From the sea lions lounging and barking and swimming just a few yards off to the small, colorful crabs in the tide pools and even the spotted ground squirrels, we couldnt stop finding neat stuff to look at. And while parking was a bit of a challenge, we had somehow lucked our way into excellent timing for the visit: When we were headed back toward San Diego just after noon, the main road into La Jolla was packed to a traffic standstill.
The biggest disappointment on the road was really my own fault. On the way home, I thought Id break up a 12-hour driving day and the monotony of the Flagstaff-to-Albuquerque stretch with a quick stop at Meteor Crater. (I mean, I wasnt going out of my way to see the big hole to the north, but hey, this one was only six miles off the highway and besides Made from Outer Space, right? I mean, thats got to count for something.)
Well, the closest I got was the parking lot, because not having done my homework, I was fully unprepared for the fifteen-dollar admission charge. Now, for all I know, the hike around the rim of the 50,000-year-old, 57-foot-deep crater, coupled with the museum exhibits and movies and other assorted stuff, could very well be spectacular and entirely worth the ticket cost ($8 for ages 6-17 and free for those younger) if you have kids to entertain and a few hours to spend there, neither of which applied to me this time around.
I do have another road trip scheduled for August, and while the...

Tocqueville's road map, methodology, liberalism, revolution, and despotism

Creator: Roger Boesche | Political Science - 2006

(New York: Vintage, 1945), II: 265-78, esp. 267-70. 3. Alexis de Tocqueville, The Old Regime and the French Revolution, trans. ... 8. Tocqueville, Old Regime, 187; Tocqueville, Selected Letters, 101-2, 106-7 (letters to Mill, June 1835; ...

About this book
One of the country's foremost Tocqueville scholars, Roger Boesche has gathered together his writings on Tocqueville from the last quarter century. These essays focus on specific aspects of Tocqueville's political thought: the methodology that Tocqueville brought to his historical and political writings allowing him to predict so well; his assumptions about what constitutes a revolution; his conviction that democracy and commerce at times work against each other; why Tocqueville's thought defies our modern political classifications; his fear of a qualitatively new kind of despotism; and Tocqueville's predictions for the future compared to those of Nietzsche, Arendt, and others. Tocqueville's Road Map is a long overdue addition to Tocqueville scholarship that will find an audience amongst scholars of political thought and history.

    Good Map

I'm very pleased with my map, but I would like to mention that you can purchase a laminated one for just a few dollars more. I bought my map and then took it to staples to have it laminated, for the price I paid I could have bought the laminated map too, and still saved money. But the map is great, now I can look at places when I see them on tv or they come up in conversation. 4/5 Daniel R. Davis - See all my reviews, March 8, 2007

Outstanding value for $10 bucks! Buy it.

Colorful and pleasing to the eye, yet has an "aged" look around the edges. Would be gorgeous with a wooden frame. very large (32"x50"). Very good details on physical features like rivers, mountain ranges, lakes. Paper is pretty thin.Centered on Europe and Africa, with the Pacific Ocean split down the middle. This makes more sense anyway. Slight overlap (about 10degrees longitude) at the east and west edges of the map. Europe and the Middle east get pretty crowded and there aren't as many labels there, but the terrain deatures are still there.Concerning distortion--I don't know anything about cartography, but for $10 who cares. You might want to consider the degree of distortion.I posted this map right above kitchen table and use it very often, whenever a place gets mentioned that I'm not familiar with. and it makes a perfect conversation piece. 3/5 Jane Rivera "RobertRivera--lifelong learner" (Tucson, AZ) - See all my reviews, November 30, 2007

    Amazing!

I just bought this map for my house and I love it! The thing that makes it stand out among other maps is that each continent is equally proportioned. A lot of maps have the US in the middle and bigger than others. But this map is accurate in laying out the world. It is big, but not enormous. The paper is very nice and the graphics very sharp. I plan to laminate it and then put it up on a wall. 5/5 Debby Li Shuchen "CrazyRavenKnight" (Michigan, US) - See all my reviews, May 5, 2006

Crisp, clear printing with gorgeous colors

I am very pleased with this product. The map arrived when promised, in excellent condition in a strong cardboard tube. It is not stiff paper (nor did I expect it to be) and I recommend that you plan to mount the paper on a backing. We used spray glue to mount it to foam core and we plan to use 1/4-inch dot stickers to mark locations on the map (note that a color other than red would be good for that use -- the capital cities are marked in red squares by the size of population). Cork board would be nice if you plan to use push pins to mark locations. Note also that if you want to frame the map you should measure it exactly. While the listed measurements state that it is 48x77, ours measured 48 1/16 by 78 1/8. This was not a problem and even if you planned for 48x77 there is a white border that would allow for some adjustment of the final size. 5/5 Michael Reber White - See all my reviews This review is from: Giant World MegaMap, Large Wall Map, Non-Laminated 48x77 I am very pleased with this product. Good detail

The map is a political map with good boundaries and city population markings and excellent geographic detail. The paper is very flimsy, however, and is a bit thinner then a piece of notebook paper. 4/5 G. G Storey (Juneau, Alaska) - See all my reviews, August 13, 2011
